Emergency contraceptive knowledge and associated factors among abortion experienced reproductive age women in Ethiopia: a multilevel analysis using EDHS 2016 data.

BACKGROUND: Emergency contraceptives (EC) are used to avoid unintended pregnancy, hence avoiding its incidence and its effects. In Ethiopia, emergency contraception is commonly accessible, especially in the big cities. However, there is virtually little understanding of or awareness of EC and Ethiopia has a high abortion rate. Therefore this study was aimed to assess the magnitude and associated factors for emergency contraceptive knowledge in Ethiopia. METHODS: The study was based on secondary data analysis of the Ethiopian Demographic and Health Survey 2016 data. A total weighted sample of

Contraceptives with novel benefits.

INTRODUCTION: Progesterone receptor (PR) agonists (progestins) and antagonists are developed for female contraceptives. However, non-contraceptive applications of newer progestins and PR modulators are being given more attention. AREAS COVERED: The newer PR agonists including drospirenone, nomegestrol, trimegestone, dienogest and nestorone are being evaluated as contraceptives with health benefits because of their unique pharmacological properties. The selective PR modulators (SPRM; PR antagonists with PR agonistic properties) are under development not only for emergency contraception but als

Community pharmacists providing emergency contraception give little advice about future contraceptive use: a mystery shopper study.

BACKGROUND: UK women increasingly prefer to attend a pharmacy for emergency contraception (EC) rather than a doctor. Most women who use EC do not conceive and remain at risk of pregnancy unless they start regular contraception. We undertook a study to evaluate the quality of service provision in community pharmacies in Lothian, Scotland, and to determine what advice is given about contraception after EC use. STUDY DESIGN: Mystery shopper study. RESULTS: EC was unobtainable from 5/40 pharmacies (12.5%), refused because of "contraindications" in 7 (17.5%) and offered in 28 (70%). Most pharmaci

Mifepristone (RU 486): current knowledge and future prospects.

Mifepristone (RU 486) has received recent attention for its effects as an abortifacient. Mifepristone has not yet been approved for use in the United States. The Food and Drug Administration issued an "approvable letter" in September 1996, but mifepristone will not be available in the United States until a new manufacturer is found. Experience with mifepristone is extensive in Europe, and there have been retrospective studies and large, controlled clinical trials of its efficacy. It is most efficacious when administered to women who are less than 8 weeks pregnant, in a single 600-mg oral dose

Patterns of use of emergency and oral contraceptives from an online service in the United Kingdom during the COVID-19 pandemic: A quantitative study of routinely collected data.

OBJECTIVES: Our study aimed to describe users of a free online contraception service, compare online emergency contraceptive pill (ECP) users with online oral contraceptive (OC) users, and describe patterns of use of online ECP and OC over time, including transition from ECP to more effective forms of contraception. STUDY DESIGN: Analysis of routinely collected, anonymized data from a large, publicly funded, online contraceptive service in the United Kingdom from April 1, 2019 to October 31, 2021. RESULTS: The online service provided 77,447 prescriptions during the study period. About 84% fo

Mixed-methods study on pharmacies as contraception providers to Kenyan young people: who uses them and why?

OBJECTIVES: This study sought to answer two questions: (1) what are the characteristics of young Kenyans aged 18-24 who use contraception obtained at pharmacies, and (2) why are pharmacies appealing sources of contraception? DESIGN AND SETTING: This was a mixed-methods study in one peri-urban part of Kwale County, Kenya. Methods included cross-sectional survey (n=740), six focus group discussions, 18 in-depth interviews and 25 key-informant interviews. Quantitative data analysis identified factors pushing young people to pharmacies for modern contraception versus other sources. Qualitative da

Clinical practice guidelines for contraception by the French National College of Gynecologists and Obstetricians (CNGOF).

The French College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (CNGOF) has released its first comprehensive recommendations for clinical practices in contraception, to provide physicians with an updated synthesis of the available data as a basis for their practice. The organizing committee and the working group adopted the objective methodological principles defined by the French Authority for Health (HAS) and selected 12 themes relevant to medical professionals' clinical practices concerning contraception. The available literature was screened through December 2017 and served as the basis of 12 texts, revie

Socio-economic inequalities in non-use of modern contraceptives among young and non-young married women in India.

BACKGROUND: It is documented that married women do not utilize contraceptive methods, because of the fear of adverse effects, no or seldom sexual interaction; perception that they should not use contraception during breastfeeding, postpartum amenorrhea, or dissatisfaction with a specific method of contraception. The current study aimed to examine the socio-economic inequalities associated with the non-use of modern contraceptive methods among young (15-24 years) and non-young (25-49 years) married women and the contributing factors in those inequalities. METHODS: The present study utilized th

Chronicity of partner violence, contraceptive patterns and pregnancy risk.

BACKGROUND: Partner violence may interfere with a woman's ability to maintain continuous contraception and therefore contribute to increased risk of pregnancy among childbearing women. STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective review of medical records (N=2000) was conducted from four family planning clinics in the northeast United States. Eligibility criteria for inclusion were as follows: (1) female, (2) reproductive age (menarche through menopause), (3) seeking reproductive services and (4) clinic visit for annual gynecologic exam between 2006 and 2011. RESULTS: Partner violence was documented in 28.

The use of the vaginal ring and transdermal patch among adolescent girls in Finland.

OBJECTIVE: Little is known about the use of the vaginal ring and transdermal patch in representative adolescent populations although these contraceptives are supposed to be a good option for that age group. The aim of this study was to determine the use of the vaginal ring and that of the transdermal patch and to compare these with the use of oral contraceptives (OCs) and emergency contraception in adolescent girls residing in Finland. METHODS: As part of the Adolescent Health and Lifestyle Survey a questionnaire was mailed to a representative sample of girls aged 14, 16 or 18 years residing

Surrogate end points in clinical research: hazardous to your health.

Surrogate end points in clinical research pose real danger. A surrogate end point is an outcome measure, commonly a laboratory test, that substitutes for a clinical event of true importance. Resistance to activated protein C, for example, has been used as a surrogate for venous thrombosis in women using oral contraceptives. Other examples of inappropriate surrogate end points in contraception include the postcoital test instead of pregnancy to evaluate new spermicides, breakage and slippage instead of pregnancy to evaluate condoms, and bone mineral density instead of fracture to assess the saf

Willingness to Test for HIV and Initiate Post-exposure Prophylaxis Among Adolescent Girls and Young Women Seeking Emergency Contraceptive Pills in Pharmacies in Nairobi and Kisumu, Kenya: A Longitudinal Study.

Adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) often seek emergency contraceptive pills (ECP) within 72 hr of condomless sex, a critical period for HIV exposure prevention through testing and postexposure prophylaxis (PEP). Pharmacies, where most AGYW obtain ECP, provide an ideal setting for timely HIV prevention services. From May to October 2023, a longitudinal study was conducted among AGYW ages 15-24 years seeking ECP in five pharmacies in Nairobi and Kisumu. Eligible participants were not on preexposure prophylaxis and provided consent. Baseline and 10-day optional follow-up phone data assessed

Awareness and attitudes towards emergency contraceptive pills among young people in the entertainment places, Vientiane City, Lao PDR.

BACKGROUND: Emergency Contraception is not officially available to the public sector in Laos. The potential of emergency contraception to prevent unwanted pregnancies is well documented in developed countries, but in Laos no studies of ECPs exist. This study aimed to assess knowledge of and attitudes towards emergency contraceptive pills (ECPs) in Vientiane, the capital city of the Lao PDR. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 500 young adults in entertainment venues by using the convenience sampling between May to July, 2007. Data were obtained through face-to-face interview

Epidemiology and clinical significance of cervical erosion in women attending a family planning clinic.

Women attending a family planning clinic were studied to determine the relation between cervical erosion and clinical and social characteristics. The appearance of the cervix was recorded without knowledge of the women's symptoms. The prevalence of erosion increased with parity but, when the effects of other factors were controlled, decreased in women aged 35 and over. Erosion was significantly more common in women taking the "pill" and less common in women using barrier methods of contraception than in others. There was considerable variation between doctors in the reporting of erosion. No as
