Current Overview of Neonatal Convulsions.

Neonatal convulsions are one of the most common emergency neurological events in the early period after birth. The frequency has been reported to be 1.5 to 3 in 1000 live births. It has been established that the convulsion threshold is lower in infants due to immature neonatal neurons and differences in neurotransmitters. Hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy is the most common etiology in neonatal convulsions. Other causes vary, and may be related to the level of development of the country. Convulsions are classified into 4 different types according to the clinical findings. The most common is the

[What causes febrile convulsions?].

Febrile convulsions affect 2-5% of children in the age group from 6 months to 5 years. The convulsions seldom have negative consequences for the child's development, but may in rare cases constitute a debut symptom of epilepsy.

Diurnal variation in febrile convulsions.

This study sought to determine diurnal variations in febrile convulsions, and to investigate whether such variations influenced the severity … the 24-hour period. The prevention of recurrent febrile convulsions by rectal administration of anticonvulsants in high-frequency zones would be clinically helpful.

[Convulsive status epilepticus in children].

INTRODUCTION: Convulsive status epilepticus is the most urgent neurological medical emergency in children. Generalized convulsive status epilepticus is the most common and life-threatening type of status epilepticus. It is not a syndrome in the same sense as febrile convulsions, benign rolandic epilepsy, and infantile polymorphic epilepsy. These latter disorders have a tight age frame, seizure semiology, and a reasonably predictable outcome. Episodes of convulsive status epilepticus can occur in each: occasionally in symptomatic and febrile convulsions, and Lennox Gastaut syndrome, rarely in b

A child with supraventricular tachycardia and convulsions.

We present an 11-year-old girl, referred for management of episodes of supraventricular tachycardia followed by generalised tonic-clonic convulsions. The episodes did not respond to digoxin and propranolol, but subsided after initiation of carbamazepine therapy. Seizures following supraventricular tachycardia are uncommon in older children. The differential diagnosis and pathophysiology of arrhythmia-related seizures are discussed.

Pre-eclampsia and febrile convulsions.

An association between pre-eclampsia and febrile convulsions has been reported, but the association may not be causal. We compared the risk of febrile convulsions in 14 974 children who had been exposed to pre-eclampsia in fetal life with that of 39 210 unexposed children. Children exposed to pre-eclampsia had a slightly increased risk of febrile convulsions, but the association was apparently caused by a shorter gestation in pre-eclamptic women.

Risk factors for febrile convulsions.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the relative importance of genes and early environment in the etiology of febrile convulsions. METHODS: We performed a follow-up study using data from two nationwide registers in Denmark, 1980-1998. The study population comprised 10,224 younger siblings of children who had had febrile convulsions, and 21,218 younger siblings of children who had never been hospitalized with febrile convulsions. RESULTS: The study provides three main findings. First, if a previous child had had a febrile convulsion, the risk was lower for the next child if either parent change

Intraoperative convulsions in a child with arthrogryposis.

A case of intraoperative convulsions occurring in a child with arthrogryposis multiplex congenita is presented. Arthrogryposis and the anaesthetic management of children with this condition is discussed. Factors which may have contributed to the convulsions are considered.

Parental anxiety in febrile convulsions.

Febrile convulsions can cause extreme anxiety to parents. Factors associated with parental anxiety and its relief during and after admission … urologic follow-up after discharge, and about one-half preferred that the child be treated with anticonvulsants. Our findings show that a very intensive effort is required to relieve parental anxiety after febrile convulsions. It is suggested that routine parental preventive education in this area be conducted in well-baby clinics.

Convulsant and anticonvulsant cyclopentanones and cyclohexanones.

The convulsant and/or anticonvulsant activity of unsubstituted and mono-alkyl-substituted cyclopentanones and cyclohexanones were examined b … t (3-ethylcyclohexanone), and the other two (3-ethylcyclopentanone and 3-t-butylcyclohexanone) were convulsants. Finally, two cyclohexanones with alkyl substituents in the 4-position were studied. Both 4-ethylcyclohexanone and 4-t-butylcyclohexanone produced convulsions when injected into mice. All the neuroactive cyclopentanones and cyclohexanones competitiv …
