Ecological and phylogenetic components of flatfish ectoparasites (Pleuronectiformes: Paralichthyidae) from the Southern Gulf of Mexico.

For many years, parasite ecologists have debated the relative importance of phylogeny and ecology as drivers of parasite community structure. Here, we address this issue using data on the metazoan ectoparasite communities of different flatfish species. Twenty species of flatfish were collected along the continental shelf of the Southern Gulf of Mexico and examined for ectoparasites. Eight flatfish species were parasitized by at least one ectoparasite species. In total, 326 ectoparasites, representing 11 species (4 monogeneans, 4 copepods, 1 isopod, 1 branchiurid, and 1 leech) were removed from

Investigating dynamics, etiology, pathology, and therapeutic interventions of Caligus clemensi and Vibrio alginolyticus co-infection in farmed marine fish.

This study investigated a disease outbreak characterized by caligid copepod infestations and subsequent secondary bacterial infections in European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) and flathead grey mullet (Mugil cephalus) cultivated at a private facility in the Deeba Triangle region of Egypt. Moribund fish displayed brown spots on the skin, tongue, and gills, along with lethargy and excess mucus. The fish suffered severe infections, exhibiting external hemorrhages, ulcers, and ascites. The fish had pale, enlarged livers with hemorrhaging. Comprehensive parasitological, bacteriological, molecular

In situ infestation of sea trout Salmo trutta with salmon louse Lepeophtheirus salmonis reveals parasite-induced behavioral modifications.

In areas with high densities of salmon farming, spillover of the ectoparasitic salmon louse Lepeophtheirus salmonis poses a major threat to wild anadromous salmonids. By combining experimentally salmon louse infestation (mean ± standard deviation = 0.25 ± 0.25 lice g-1 fish) with acoustic telemetry, we studied the behavior of wild first-time migrating sea trout Salmo trutta (n = 58, fork length = 138-204 mm) from late June to September in a marine area with naturally low infestation pressure. We observed that a similar proportion of sea trout from the control and exposed groups returned to fre

A salmon lice prediction model.

Salmon lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) are parasites on salmonid fish and a density-dependent constraint to the sustainable farming of salmonids in open net pens. To control the parasites, fish farmers in Norway are required to count the number of salmon lice in different developmental stages on a subset of the fish each week. Furthermore, they must ensure that the number of adult female lice per fish does not increase beyond a specified threshold level. Here we present a model that may assist farmers in the salmon lice management. The model can predict the numbers of salmon lice in different d

Prezygotic reproductive barriers in precopulatory behavior of tidepool copepod species.

Complexity in prezygotic mating behavior can contribute to the emergence of sexual incompatibility and reproductive isolation. In this study, we performed behavioral tests with two tidepool copepod species of the genus Tigriopus to explore the possibility of precopulatory behavioral isolation. We found that interspecific mating attempts failed prior to genital contact, and that this failure occurred at different behavioral steps between reciprocal pairings. Our results suggest that prezygotic barriers may exist at multiple points of the behavioral process on both male and female sides, possibl

Unveiling the Role of Dynamic Alternative Splicing Modulation After Infestation with Sea Lice (Caligus rogercresseyi) in Atlantic Salmon.

Sea lice are pathogenic marine ectoparasite copepods that represent a severe risk to the worldwide salmon industry. Several transcriptomic investigations have characterized the regulation of gene expression response of Atlantic salmon to sea lice infestation. These studies have focused on the levels of transcript, overlooking the potentially relevant role of alternative splicing (AS), which corresponds to an essential control mechanism of gene expression through RNA processing. In the present study, we performed a genome-wide bioinformatics characterization of differential AS event dynamics in

Policies to promote breeding for lice-resistant salmon: Incentives designed for resilient and sustainable growth in aquaculture.

Sea lice represent a persistent and growing problem, challenging the resilience and growth of the salmon aquaculture industry. In this Norwegian case study, we studied and discuss how the absence of policy instruments directed at stimulating breeding for lice resistance (LR) might be explained. We found well-documented opportunities for selection progress for LR. Hence, breeding on LR appears with an untapped potential. We discuss how market-based, legal, institutional and interest-based factors can explain the absence of policy instruments stimulating LR breeding. Methodologically, we obtaine

A ferritin gene in the marine copepod Acartia tonsa as a highly sensitive biomonitor for nano-contamination.

Toxicology is not only for eco-risk assessments, but also for the real-time environmental monitoring based on the quick response of specific biomarkers. Ferritin gene (ftn) is a potential biomarker involving in crucial protective responses in biota. However, little information is available concerning the ftn in marine copepod Acartia tonsa (A. tonsa), a model organism widely applied in toxicology assessments. Our study for the first time identified and characterized the ftn in A. tonsa, along with its time-dependent transcriptional response to the reproductive toxicity of two newly emerged nan

Key role of mitochondrial mutation Leu107Ser (COX1) in deltamethrin resistance in salmon lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis).

The pyrethroid deltamethrin (DTM) is used to treat Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) against salmon louse (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) infestations. However, DTM resistance has evolved in L. salmonis and is currently common in the North Atlantic. This study aimed to re-assess the association between DTM resistance and mitochondrial (mtDNA) mutations demonstrated in previous reports. Among 218 L. salmonis collected in Scotland in 2018-2019, 89.4% showed DTM resistance in bioassays, while 93.6% expressed at least one of four mtDNA single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) previously shown to be resistance

Estimating sea lice infestation pressure on salmon farms: Comparing different methods using multivariate state-space models.

Sea lice are ectoparasites of salmonids, and are considered to be one of the main threats to Atlantic salmon farming. Sea lice infestation on a farm is usually initiated by attachment of the free-living copepodid stage derived from the surrounding water, frequently originating from adult lice on the same farm or from neighboring salmonid farms, referred to as internal and external sources, respectively. Various approaches have been proposed to quantify sea lice infestation pressure on farms to improve the management of this pest. Here, we review and compare five of these methods based on sea l

Grazer-induced bioluminescence gives dinoflagellates a competitive edge.

Bioluminescent dinoflagellates grow at one third the rate of their competitors of equivalent size, such as diatoms [1]. Despite this disadvantage, dinoflagellates successfully persist within phytoplankton communities and even form large blooms during favourable conditions. One explanation for this paradox is that bioluminescence acts as a defence that reduces losses to zooplankton grazers, such as copepods [2,3]. Lindström et al.[4] found that the dinoflagellate Lingulodinium polyedra (F.Stein) J.D.Dodge increase their bioluminescence in response to copepodamides [5], polar lipids exuded by co

Terrestrial organic matter increases zooplankton methylmercury accumulation in a brown-water boreal lake.

Increases in terrestrial organic matter (tOM) transport from catchments to boreal lakes can affect methylmercury (MeHg) accumulation in aquatic biota both directly by increasing concentrations of aqueous MeHg, and indirectly through effects on MeHg bioavailability and on energy pathways in the lower food web. We carried out a detailed seasonal study of water chemistry, zooplankton diet, and MeHg accumulation in zooplankton in two lakes with contrasting tOM concentrations. Between-lake differences explained 51% of the variability in our water chemistry data, with no observed effect of season or

Distribution, Prevalence, and Maximum Intensity of the Ectoparasitic Copepod Salmincola cf. Edwardsii in Brook Trout in Wisconsin Streams.

Since the late 19th century, the ectoparasitic copepod Salmincola cf. edwardsii has been observed infecting brook trout ( Salvelinus fontinalis) in Wisconsin streams. A perceived increase in the incidence of S. cf. edwardsii infection across the state and the observation of an S. edwardsii epizootic leading to declines in brook trout recruitment in Ash Creek, Wisconsin, have raised concerns about the extent to which S. edwardsii threaten other populations of brook trout in Wisconsin streams. In 2013-2017, brook trout were inspected in 282 streams across the state to determine the distribution,

Simulated environmental transport distances of Lepeophtheirus salmonis in Loch Linnhe, Scotland, for informing aquaculture area management structures.

In the majority of salmon farming countries, production occurs in zones where practices are coordinated to manage disease agents such as Lepeophtheirus salmonis. To inform the structure of zones in specific systems, models have been developed accounting for parasite biology and system hydrodynamics. These models provide individual system farm relationships, and as such, it may be beneficial to produce more generalized principles for informing structures. Here, we use six different forcing scenarios to provide simulations from a previously described model of the Loch Linnhe system, Scotland, to

Metazoan gill parasites of the Atlantic bluefin tuna Thunnus thynnus (Linnaeus) (Osteichthyes: Scombridae) from the Mediterranean and their possible use as biological tags.

The gills of 63 specimens of the Atlantic bluefin tuna Thunnus thynnus (Linnaeus) (Osteichthyes: Scombridae) from three localities of the Mediterranean (Sardinian, Tyrrhenian and Levantine Seas) were examined for metazoan parasites. The parasite fauna of T. thynnus from the Sea of Sardinia included 11 species: five didymozoid trematodes, three capsalid and one hexostomid monogeneans, and one caligid and one pseudocycnid copepods. Four didymozoids were found in fish from the Levantine Sea and only one didymozoid was recorded in fish from the Tyrrhenian Sea. Dividing the hosts into four size-gro

Sea lice levels on wild Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., returning to the coast of Ireland.

The sea lice population structure, prevalence and intensity of Lepeophtheirus salmonis have been studied over a period extending from 2004 to 2011. Infestation data were collected from the interceptor drift net fishery from 2004 until it was closed in 2006. From 2010, data were collected from the inshore draft net fishery. In all, 34 samples from the drift and draft net fisheries have been analysed to date. Prevalence of infestation with L. salmonis regularly approached 100% in samples of hosts recovered from the offshore drift net fishery. Abundance was variable both within and between years

Salmon lice--impact on wild salmonids and salmon aquaculture.

Salmon lice, Lepeophtheirus salmonis, are naturally occurring parasites of salmon in sea water. Intensive salmon farming provides better conditions for parasite growth and transmission compared with natural conditions, creating problems for both the salmon farming industry and, under certain conditions, wild salmonids. Salmon lice originating from farms negatively impact wild stocks of salmonids, although the extent of the impact is a matter of debate. Estimates from Ireland and Norway indicate an odds ratio of 1.1:1-1.2:1 for sea lice treated Atlantic salmon smolt to survive sea migration com

Spatial and temporal distribution of Lepeophtheirus salmonis (Krøyer) larvae in a sea loch containing Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., farms on the north-west coast of Scotland.

A plankton survey investigated spatial and temporal distributions of larval sea lice in a sea loch on the north-west coast of Scotland. Plankton tows were collected approximately weekly at two depths (0 and 5 m) at five sample stations over a 2-year period. The survey began in March 2002 when Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., farms in the study area stocked with fish and finished in March 2004, after farms completed harvesting. Over 90% of lice recovered were Lepeophtheirus salmonis (Krøyer); therefore, the results of this paper refer largely to that species. The data were analysed using genera
