BACKGROUND: Intrauterine infection with herpes simplex virus (HSV) has been associated with a significant number of neonatal HSV infections. When these infections begin in utero, the associated morbidity is more severe, and treatment regimens may be less effective.

Lysosomal storage diseases are a rare but significant cause of non-immune hydrops fetalis (NIHF). In 17 cases of NIHF detected by ultrasound, the activity of five lysosomal enzymes was measured in leukocytes or plasma of 1 ml of fetal blood obtained by cordocentesis. By this approach seven lysosomal storage diseases known to present with hydrops fetalis can be diagnosed. In this series one case of mucopolysaccharidosis VII (M. The application of high resolution ultrasound in the prenatal diagnosis enables a detailed differentation of the intracerebral structures in the fetus. In a period of 16 months (Jan. 1990-June 1991) we diagnosed at the "Center for prenatal diagnosis and therapy" at the Charité's Hospital in 14 fetuses among 1800 investigated plexus chorioideus cysts. Four bladder-amniotic shunts were done in three fetuses with megacystis. The procedure was successful in all cases on the first attempt. The interval between the shunt insertion and delivery was range from three to twenty eight days. Pulmonary and renal damage were irreversible in two fetuses. Spontaneous abortion occurred with the third fetus which had multiple malformations. We believe that selection of candidates for such procedures should be improved. Early diagnosis and referral to high technology centers will increase clinical experience.

A 5-year prospective prenatal study in 151 pregnancies with 152 malformed fetuses detected by ultrasound was evaluated cytogenetically. Thirty-five fetuses (23%) had abnormal karyotypes.
