PURPOSE: Ras farnesyltransferase inhibitors are known to block the membrane translocalization of oncogenic Ras protein. They inhibit the cytoplasmic mitogen-activated protein kinase signaling cascade related to Ras protein. Thus far, Ras farnesyltransferase inhibitors have been exclusively regarded with the anticancer drugs. The object of this study was to elucidate the role of Ras farnesyltransferase inhibitors on the corneal opacity induced by an inflammatory stimulus.
METHODS: We used a cauterization-induced corneal inflammation model. The central corneas of BALB/c mice were cauterized wit…

PURPOSE: During the generation of transgenic mice (TGs) introduced with mouse T-cell receptor delta (TCR delta) gene, the authors found a TG line with corneal opacity that coincided with the presence of the transgene. The authors investigated the pathogenesis and molecular mechanisms of this corneal opacity in this line.
METHODS: The pathologic features and pathogenesis of the corneal opacity in TGs were examined histologically using transmission and scanning electron microscopy, as well as light microscopy. DNA and RNA blot analyses were performed to examine the copy number and the expressio…

BACKGROUND: Adequate visual acuity significantly contributes to the age-appropriate development of children's neurobehavior. Infantile corneal opacities are rare but implicate a high potential for amblyopia.
OBJECTIVE: This review aims to provide an overview of the most common causes of infantile corneal opacities and highlights ophthalmopathological correlations.
METHODS: The following review is based on an extensive literature search.
RESULTS: If metabolic diseases, traumatic or infectious events can be excluded as a cause for an infantile corneal opacity, it is important to focus on the …

A 24-year-old woman was found to have a gray, intermittent, linear opacity in the supertemporal quadrant of the right corneal epithelium during preoperative evaluation for laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK); all other examinations were within normal limits. After bilateral LASIK, both corneas healed well, and the linear opacity in the right eye had disappeared. More than 3 years postoperatively, a gray band-shaped opacity was detected in the right cornea, and a diagnosis of Lisch epithelial corneal dystrophy was established. Five months after diagnosis, the corneal opacity had significantly …

PURPOSE: To describe corneal opacities of a new type and distribution in a small family.
METHODS: Family members were interviewed and examined to establish a pedigree and to detect any corneal abnormalities.
RESULTS: Two family members presented with corneal opacities. Both had, in the very peripheral cornea, flat, greyish, rounded opacities, 20-200 microm in diameter, on the Descemet's membrane. In addition, the mother had the same type of opacities over the central cornea just inside the Bowman's layer. The remaining parts of the corneas were clear. Vision was unaffected and the opacities

Classification of trachoma by site rather than density of opacities is better related to visual prognosis and helps in selection for graft surgery. The cases are divided into 3 groups: peripheral corneal opacities, central corneal opacities, and diffuse corneal opacities (ground-glass cornea). A central lesion has the poorest prognosis, especially in children.

Peters anomaly is characterized by a defect in the development of the anterior segment of the eye during fetal development (Anterior segment dysgenesis). This anomaly presents a broad clinical presentation ranging from minimal peripheral corneal opacity to extensive adhesions of the iris and lens with dense central corneal opacity that impairs vision. Peters Plus Syndrome is a recessive autosomal syndrome manifested by Peters anomaly, along with systemic disorders such as brachydactyly (short fingers and toes), short stature, a developmental delay, dysmorphic facial features, and may accompani…

PURPOSE: This report describes the clinical efficacy of combined corneal and conjunctival micropigment tattooing for the treatment of a corneoconjunctival opacity.
CASE SUMMARY: Combined corneal and conjunctival micropigment tattooing was performed on a 39-year-old man who had a cosmetic problem due to traumatic corneoconjunctival opacity. After removal of the corneal epithelium, a 30-gauge needle filled with dye was placed into the corneal stroma. The dye was injected into the stroma and conjunctiva. The patient was followed up for 24 months postoperatively. Although some of the dye dissipat

PURPOSE: Vitreoretinal dysplasia is characterized by a congenital bilateral nonattachment of the retina. In some cases, anteroposition of the iris and lens can lead to corneolenticular contact and corneal opacity, masquerading as Peters' anomaly. We report 3 cases of vitreoretinal dysplasia initially diagnosed as Peters' anomaly.
METHODS: Case report.
RESULTS: Case 1: In a 3-year-old boy with bilateral corneal opacities, high frequency ultrasound showed iridolenticular adherences as in Peters' anomaly, but color Doppler imaging of the posterior pole revealed a bilateral total retinal detachm…

Disorders of lipid metabolism, either hyperlipidemia or hypolipidemia, are associated with the formation of corneal opacities. Corneal arcus, the most commonly encountered peripheral corneal opacity, is frequently associated with abnormal serum lipid levels, but may occur without any predisposing factors. Reports also have linked corneal arcus with alcoholism, diabetes mellitus and atherosclerotic heart disease. Unilateral arcus is a rare entity that is associated with carotid artery disease or ocular hypotony. Diffuse corneal opacities associated with hypolipidemic disorders such as LCAT defi…

A countrywide prevalence survey of 9,508 children was conducted in El Salvador to determine the prevalence of anterior-segment abnormalities and magnitude of clinical vitamin A deficiency. Thirty-six children had corneal opacities, 56% of them secondary to trauma. Such traumatic corneal opacities were 19 times more frequent among urban than rural children, 57.6 vs. 3.1 per 1,000. Keratomalacia accounted for only 8% of all corneal opacities, and for one (and possibly two) of the five cases of bilateral anterior-segment blindness encountered. The prevalance of Bitot spots and vitamin-A-related c

Various corneal diseases, such as hereditary corneal dystrophies, corneal infection, and bullous keratopathy, cause corneal opacity, scarring, and edema, leading to severely decreased visual acuity and loss of vision. These diseases were regarded as corneal opacity diseases, and the decreased visual acuity was considered to be predominantly caused by corneal opacity. The influence of corneal irregular astigmatism on vision has been poorly understood to date, mainly because accurate quantification of irregular astigmatism has been technically challenging. We have performed detailed analyses of …
