A 5-month-old boy of a Romanian family traveling via Ukraine to Poland developed a respiratory disease that resembled and that was initially diagnosed as pharyngeal diphtheria. The child recovered after treatment with antidiphtheria antitoxin. A coryneform bacterium had been isolated from a nasopharyngeal specimen from the child and was initially identified as an atypical Corynebacterium diphtheriae strain. Gangrenous dermatitis caused by Corynebacterium ulcerans developed in 63 of 350 wild Richardson ground squirrels (Spermophilus richardsonii). Six squirrels died of toxemia and/or septicemia, but 57 responded to topical and parenteral administration of antibiotics. The epizo-otic was believed to be associated with fighting; infected and carrier ground squirrels most likely transmitted the C ulcerans through bite wounds. Individuals handling ground squirrels should be cautioned that C ulcerans may produce a diphtheria-like disease in human beings.

We have investigated the activity of local Corynebacterium parvum (Propionibacterium acnes) as an immunopotentiator of allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) and photo-ACD in rodents. Corynebacterium diphtheriae was isolated from pyoderma and ulcerative skin lesions with a modified delayed culture procedure as late as 9 weeks after field collection of silica gel-desiccated swabs. Biotypes gravis and mitis were identified. Most isolates were nontoxigenic. Todd-Hewitt broth enrichment enhanced recovery of C. diphtheriae by 70%.

Pituitary abscesses are an uncommon cause of pituitary lesions. A 77-year-old woman presented for elective resection of a presumed non-functioning pituitary macroadenoma in the context of a progressive left-sided visual field deficit. She proceeded to trans-sphenoidal resection of the pituitary lesion, with purulent fluid found upon opening the pituitary capsule. Corynebacterium striatum, which is a common coloniser of human skin and mucous membranes, is increasingly being recognised as an emerging pathogen. We present a case of a 69-year-old woman with empyema and osteomyelitis caused by C. striatum. We report a case of septic arthritis of a native knee joint due to Corynebacterium striatum, a rare and unusual cause of septic arthritis of native joints. The isolate was identified by a combination of phenotypic, mass spectrometric, and nucleic acid-based assays and exhibited high-level resistance to most antimicrobials.
