Camellioside A, isolated from Camellia japonica flowers, attenuates UVA-induced production of MMP-1 in HaCaT keratinocytes via suppression of MAPK activation.

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is responsible for various damages to the skin, collectively referred to as photoaging. A key UV-induced effect on the skin is excessive degradation of collagen and related structural abnormalities. Camellia japonica is a flowering plant with cosmeceutical properties. In the present study, Camellioside A (CMDA), a triterpene saponin, was investigated for its effects against UVA-induced photoaging in HaCaT keratinocytes. CMDA was analyzed to determine its attenuating effects against UVA-induced overproduction of the collagen degradation enzyme, matrix metalloproteinas

Aliphatic and alicyclic diols induce melanogenesis in cultured cells and guinea pig skin.

We have found that several aliphatic and alicyclic diols induce melanogenesis in cultured S91 mouse melanoma cells and normal human epidermal melanocytes (NHEM). In addition, these compounds induce melanogenesis when applied to guinea pig skin, with transfer of melanin to keratinocytes and formation of "supranuclear caps," as occurs in naturally pigmented skin. The relative order of potency of some of these diols in NHEM is 5-norbornene-2,2-dimethanol > 3,3-dimethyl-1,2-butanediol > cis-1,2-cyclopentanediol > 2,3-dimethyl-2,3-butanediol > 1,2-propanediol. Following treatment with these diols o

Antimicrobial-guided metabolomic analysis of essential oil derived from the Aotearoa New Zealand endemic plant Kunzea robusta (Kānuka).

Traditional medicine has been the source of many modern drugs. To explore the pharmaceutical potential of extracts from a taonga (treasured Indigenous plant) species, we obtained an unbiased GC-MS profile of 84 compounds from 99 samples of kānuka oil collected from five land blocks across two seasons. Multivariate analysis correlated the compound profiles with antifungal, antibacterial, and anti-acne activities as determined via growth inhibition of Candida albicans, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), and Propionibacterium acnes, respectively. The kānuka oil samples had the gr

Bioinspired synthesis of bioactive glass nanocomposites for hyaluronic acid delivery to bone and skin.

In this study, we present nanocomposites of bioactive glass (BG) and hyaluronic acid (HA) (nano-BGHA) for effective delivery of HA to skin and bone. The synthesis of the nanocomposites has been carried out through the bio-inspired method, which is a modification of the traditional Stober's synthesis as it avoids using ethanol, ammonia, synthetic surfactants, or high-temperature calcination. This environmentally friendly, bio-inspired route allowed the synthesis of mesoporous nanocomposites with an average hydrodynamic radius of ∼190 nm and an average net surface charge of ∼-21 mV. Mangostanin, a Xanthone Derived from Garcinia mangostana Fruit, Exerts Protective and Reparative Effects on Oxidative Damage in Human Keratinocytes.

The fruit of Garcinia mangostana (mangosteen) is known in ancient traditional Asian medicine for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory and anticancer activities. These effects are mainly due to the action of polyphenols known as xanthones, which are contained in the pericarp of the fruit. In recent years, there has been a growing interest from pharmaceutical companies in formulating new topicals based on mangosteen full extracts to prevent skin aging. However, the molecules responsible for these effects and the mechanisms involved have not been investigated so far. Here, the ari

A cleanser formulated with Tris (hydroxymethyl) aminomethane and l-arginine significantly improves facial acne in male Thai subjects.

BACKGROUND: Acne is one of the most common skin problems among human populations. A facial cleanser formulated with alkyl ether carboxylate (AEC) and alkyl carboxylate (AC) can improve acne by cleansing sebum on facial skin but cannot effectively remove keratotic plugs in the skin pores. Recently, we confirmed that Tris (hydroxymethyl) aminomethane and L-arginine (Tris/Arg) is able to reduce sebum levels, disrupt keratotic plugs in vitro and decrease pore size on facial skin. OBJECTIVE: To compare the efficacy of the Tris/Arg-formulated cleanser with the AEC/AC cleanser in Thai subjects with
