Clinical outcomes for cystic fibrosis patients with Pseudomonas aeruginosa cross-infections.

INTRODUCTION: Pseudomonas aeruginosa cross-infections are related to increased morbidity and mortality in cystic fibrosis (CF). OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to evaluate the incidence of cross-infections with P. aeruginosa in children with CF. METHODOLOGY: CF patients from whom at least one P. aeruginosa strain had been isolated were included in the study. The strain genotyping was performed using pulse-field gel electrophoresis. The history of contacts between patients was established based on questionnaires. RESULTS: The study group consisted of 75 patients (aged 1.0-19.2 years) an

Cross-sectional prevalence of Fasciola gigantica infections in beef cattle in Botswana.

A cross-sectional study was carried out to determine the prevalence and distribution of Fasciola gigantica infections in communally grazed and ranch-grazed beef cattle through coprological examination. A total of 8646 cattle (4618 adults, 2843 weaners and 1185 calves) faecal samples were collected during the 24 months of study. Results from this study indicated that only 64 (0.74%; 95% CI 0.57, 0.94%) of the samples were positive for F. gigantica eggs. The positive samples were detected in one (Central) of the six study districts and was restricted to the Tuli Block (commercial) farms in Macha

The Colibactin Genotoxin Generates DNA Interstrand Cross-Links in Infected Cells.

Colibactins are hybrid polyketide-nonribosomal peptides produced by Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and other Enterobacteriaceae harboring the pks genomic island. These genotoxic metabolites are produced by pks-encoded peptide-polyketide synthases as inactive prodrugs called precolibactins, which are then converted to colibactins by deacylation for DNA-damaging effects. Colibactins are bona fide virulence factors and are suspected of promoting colorectal carcinogenesis when produced by intestinal E. coli Natural active colibactins have not been isolated, and how they induce DNA damage

Rhinovirus infections and immunisation induce cross-serotype reactive antibodies to VP1.

Rhinoviruses (RVs) are ubiquitous human respiratory viruses, the major cause of common colds, acute exacerbations of asthma and other respiratory diseases. The development of antibodies to RV following primary infection is poorly understood and there is currently no RV vaccine available. We therefore used mouse models of intranasal RV infection and immunisation to determine the induction, magnitude and specificity of antibody responses. Strong cross-serotype RV-specific IgG responses in serum and bronchoalveolar lavage were induced towards the RV capsid protein VP1. IgA responses were weaker,

Latent and subclinical tuberculosis in HIV infected patients: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: HIV and tuberculosis (TB) are commonly associated. Identifying latent and asymptomatic tuberculosis infection in HIV-positive patients is important in preventing death and morbidity associated with active TB. METHODS: Cross-sectional study of one time use of an interferon-gamma release assay (T-SPOT.TB - immunospot) to detect tuberculosis infection in patients in a UK inner city HIV clinic with a large sub-Saharan population. RESULTS: 542 patient samples from 520 patients who disclosed their symptoms of TB were tested. Median follow-up was 35 months (range 27-69). More than half

Testing for sexually transmitted infections in general practice: cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Primary care is an important provider of sexual health care in England. We sought to explore the extent of testing for chlamydia and HIV in general practice and its relation to associated measures of sexual health in two contrasting geographical settings. METHODS: We analysed chlamydia and HIV testing data from 64 general practices and one genitourinary medicine (GUM) clinic in Brent (from mid-2003 to mid-2006) and 143 general practices and two GUM clinics in Avon (2004). We examined associations between practice testing status, practice characteristics and hypothesised markers of

Infections and antibiotic prescribing in Swedish nursing homes: a cross-sectional study.

The aim of this study was to present and assess the treatment of infections in Swedish nursing homes. It included 58 nursing homes with 3002 residents. During 3 months, nurses in the nursing homes recorded all infections requiring a physician's opinion. Of the 889 infectious episodes, 84% were treated with antibiotics. Many of the antibiotics were issued after indirect contact with the physician (38%). Indications for antibiotics were in 55% of the cases urinary tract infections (UTI), in 17% skin and soft-tissue infections and in 15% respiratory tract infections (RTI). The most common antibio

La Crosse virus infection of mammalian cells induces mRNA instability.

La Crosse virus infection of BHK cells leads to a dramatic shutoff of not only host protein synthesis but also viral protein synthesis later in infection. This shutoff can be accounted for by the loss of the cytoplasmic cellular and viral mRNAs. The induction of mRNA instability requires extensive virus replication, since when cycloheximide is added early in infection the preexisting viral and cellular mRNAs do not decrease upon incubation of the cultures. Pretreatment of the cultures with actinomycin D does not affect the ability of La Crosse virus infection to induce mRNA instability, and ex

Clinical characteristics, factors associated with urinary tract infection and outcome in acutely admitted patients with infection; an exploratory cross-sectional cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) remain a leading infectious disease cause of admission to the emergency department (ED) and antibiotic prescription. Heterogeneity of disease presentation challenges early diagnostics, leading to improper antibiotic prescription and delayed diagnosis. Prior studies have relied on positive urine cultures for diagnosis, but its performance suffers from false positives and false negatives. This study aimed to identify factors associated with UTIs and describe patient characteristics and outcomes while not using positive urine culture as an obligatory pa
