Telogen effluvium and COVID-19: a cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVE: COVID-19 is a febrile infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus type 2 (SARS-CoV-2). This virus affects several organs, including the skin. Acute telogen effluvium (TE) is a non-scarring hair loss characterized by diffuse hair shedding that begins three months after a stressful event and can last up to six months. COVID-19 infection is one of these potential stressors. Recently, there has been a reported link between increased scalp hair shedding and post-infection patients during the COVID-19 outbreak. The present work aimed to study the possible ef

The objective of this study was to investigate the prevalence of chemsex in an Italian group and describe its main characteristics. Additionally, the study aimed to suggest prevention strategies addressing the risks associated with

A cross-sectional study of haemolytic disease of the newborn in Uganda.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Haemolytic disease of the newborn (HDN) is an immune haemolytic anaemia from maternal alloantibodies. Rh immunoglobulin (RhIg) prophylaxis can prevent alloimmunization to the D antigen. However, RhIg is not universally available in Uganda. ABO incompatibility also causes HDN. We determined the prevalence of HDN among newborn infants with jaundice in Uganda. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a prospective cross-sectional study at Kawempe National Referral Hospital, Kampala, Uganda. Infants aged 0-14 days with neonatal jaundice (or total bilirubin >50 μmol/L) were e

The aim of this study was to cross-sectionally investigate the current practice of medication in FMS patients in Germany. We systematically interviewed 156 patients with FMS, while they were participating in a larger study. The patients had been stratified into subgroups with and without a decrease in intraepidermal nerve fiber density. The drugs most commonly used to treat FMS pain were nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug

Awareness of patients receiving bisphosphonates: a cross-sectional study.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the awareness of patients using bisphosphonates (BP) regarding their risks and benefits. Sixty-five patients using BP were included. Each participant completed a self-administered questionnaire consisting of 13 questions, including sociodemographic and general information on BP. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and a binomial test was used to assess patient knowledge about BP, considering a 5% significance level. Fifty-nine (90.2%) patients were unaware or had never heard of BP drugs and only 3 (4.6%) knew their indications. Only 6 patients

Paranoia and Suicidality: A Cross-Sectional Study in the General Population.

Paranoia and suicidality seem to be common traits expressing in the general population to varying degrees. This study aims to explore the association between both and to identify determinants of comorbidity. We interviewed a representative sample of the population in Andalusia (n = 4507) and assessed paranoia and suicidality utilizing the Spanish Green's Paranoid Thoughts Scale (S-GPTS) and the suicidality section of the MINI Neuropsychiatric Interview, respectively. We gathered data on socio-demographics, personality, substance abuse, social support, and environmental distress. We found that

Depression and Anxiety in Patients With Cancer: A Cross-Sectional Study.

OBJECTIVES: Depression and anxiety persist in cancer patients, creating an additional burden during treatment and making it more challenging in terms of management and control. Studies on the prevalence of depression and anxiety among cancer patients in the Middle East are limited and include many limitations such as their small sample sizes and restriction to a specific type of cancer in specific clinical settings. This study aimed to describe the prevalence and risk factors of depression and anxiety among cancer patients in the inpatient and outpatient settings. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A tot

Primary outcomes were patient delay and system delay. Patient delay is defined as the time from symptom onset until the first contact to a healthcare professional, whereas system delay is the time from this contac

The prevalence of adenomyosis in an infertile population: a cross-sectional study.

RESEARCH QUESTION: Adenomyosis has been reported in a high proportion (24.4%) of infertile women, but this may be over-representative. What is the exact prevalence of adenomyosis in an infertility clinic population? DESIGN: In this cross-sectional study, 320 infertile women ≤41 years of age attending the infertility clinic of a university teaching hospital were screened by two-dimensional transvaginal ultrasound (2D-TVS) to look for the sonographic markers of adenomyosis, with subsequent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) if suspected. Additionally, the adenomyosis subtype (I-IV) was determined

Clinical course of percutaneous cholecystostomies: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Although cholecystectomy is the standard treatment modality, it has been shown that perioperative mortality is approaching 19% in critical and elderly patients. Percutaneous cholecystostomy (PC) can be considered as a safer option with a significantly lower complication rate in these patients. AIM: To assess the clinical course of acute cholecystitis (AC) in patients we treated with PC. METHODS: The study included 82 patients with Grade I, II or III AC according to the Tokyo Guidelines 2018 (TG18) and treated with PC. The patients' demographic and clinical features, laboratory pa

Cannabinoid-Induced Psychosis: A Cross-Sectional Gender Study.

BACKGROUND: Gender is a crucial factor in the development of mental illnesses, with an essential influence on clinical characteristics and not only on the prevalence of each disorder. Gender differences in cannabinoid-related disorders are highlighted by different research fields (preclinical, clinical, socio-demographic studies), but few studies focused on differential symptom expression in cannabinoid-induced psychosis. This study aims at investigating qualitative and quantitative gender differences in specific psychopathological domains in a clinical sample of subjects affected by cannabino
