[Diagnosis and treatment of eosinophilic cystitis].

Eosinophilic cystitis is an inflammatory disease of the bladder wall. It is rare, so there are no standard treatment guidelines. We conducted a retrospective study of 10 patients with eosinophilic cystitis diagnosed and treated in our Department between 2006 and 2017. The average age of patients was 46 years; there was a male predominance. Three patients were atopic. The most common symptoms were irritative urinary symptoms in 9 cases, macroscopic haematuria in 8 cases and pelvic pain in 6 cases. Four patients had high levels of eosinophils in their blood. Cystoscopy showed petechiae in 5 case…

A Case Report of Xanthogranulomatous Cystitis.

Xanthogranulomatous cystitis (XC) is a chronic granulomatous inflammation with rare incidence. Herein, we report a 62-year-old female whose cystoscopic biopsy showed chronic inflammation accompanied with acute episode of inflammation. According to CT scan, pathology of the lesion could not rule out bladder carcinoma. Thus, partial cystectomy was done. But post-operatory pathological examination of the specimen was finally demonstrated Xanthogranulomatous cystitis. To the best of our knowledge, the present case of XC is the 28th to be reported in the world literature.

Modeling and Treatment of Radiation Cystitis.

Radiation cystitis (RC) is a debilitating condition that, if not managed at an early stage, can have a major impact on the quality of life of a patient and can lead to severe hemorrhaging and even death. Current treatments are focused on arresting bladder hemorrhaging, but none are able to relieve other urological symptoms associated with cystitis. There is a strong need for in-depth studies using preclinical RC models to better understand the underlying disease progression and to test novel therapies. Here we review the most commonly used therapies for RC, novel treatment strategies, and the …

Diagnosis and management of interstitial cystitis.

Interstitial cystitis is a diagnosis of exclusion. The definition has expanded over the years to encompass painful bladder syndrome. It is disease state that is often delayed in its diagnosis and difficult to manage. Treatment options include oral and intravesical therapies as well as both minor and major surgical options. Also, a patient can improve symptoms by following self-management recommendations that focus on both diet and stress management. Treatment options should be periodically evaluated with validated questionnaires to insure they are improving the patient's symptoms, and a multid…

An integrative approach to interstitial cystitis.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to observe the effect of a combined pharmacologic and complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) treatment, which included biotherapeutic drainage, for a young woman with interstitial cystitis (IC). PATIENT AND METHODS: A 17-year old female patient was referred for treatment with a 2-year diagnosis of IC and dissatisfaction with her 3-month use of Elmiron. She was kept on Elmiron and prescribed additional CAM treatments, including biotherapeutic drainage, combination homeopathic medications, and asked to keep a journal. The resolution of her symptoms occ…

Treatment of interstitial cystitis in women.

Interstitial cystitis (IC) has been described as a chronic debilitating sterile inflammatory multifactorial bladder syndrome of unknown etiology. IC is characterized by bladder pain (or suprapubic pain) associated with urgency, urinary frequency, and nocturia. Because the pathogenesis of IC remains unclear, it is still an enigma and represents a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. The diagnosis of IC remains unclear and is based on exclusion of other diseases. Consequently, IC has usually been underdiagnosed, and the consensus on best available treatment for the disease is lacking. The curre…

[Interstitial cystitis. A challenge for the clinician].

Interstitial cystitis is characterized by over 6 months of chronic pain, pressure and discomfort felt in the lower pelvis or bladder. It is often relieved with voiding, along with daytime frequency and nocturia in the absence of an urinary tract infection. The disorder can be divided clinically into two groups -ulcerative and non-ulcerative- based on cystoscopic findings and response to treatment. Management follows an approach of applying the least invasive therapy that affords sufficient relief of symptoms. We report a case of a patient with interstitial cystitis. The diagnosis was performed…

Hemorrhagic cystitis: A challenge to the urologist.

Severe hemorrhagic cystitis often arises from anticancer chemotherapy or radiotherapy for pelvic malignancies. Infectious etiologies are less common causes except in immunocompromised hosts. These cases can be challenging problems for the urologist and a source of substantial morbidity and sometimes mortality for the patients. A variety of modalities of treatment have been described for the management of hemorrhagic cystitis but there is none that is uniformly effective. Some progress has been made in the understanding and management of viral hemorrhagic cystitis. This article reviews the comm…

A model of cystitis pain in the mouse.

Interstitial cystitis (IC) is a chronic pelvic-perineal pain syndrome of unknown etiology that mainly targets the lower urinary tract. It is characterized by urinary frequency and urgency, inflammation, stiffening of the bladder wall, and visceral pain. Pain is the most prominent feature of IC and current treatments provide limited relief. To facilitate the identification of novel therapeutic options for IC, efforts are being made to identify more predictive rodent models. A well-characterized rat model is based on administration of cyclophosphamide (CP). The protocol described in this unit re…

Pharmacotherapy of interstitial cystitis in women.

Interstitial cystitis is a condition that affects the urinary bladder and may be more prevalent than commonly thought. Symptoms range widely in severity and typically include urinary urgency, frequency and pelvic pain. Therapies usually target the known pathophysiology of this condition. Oral agents commonly include bladder surface mucin analogues, antihistamines, narcotics, tricyclic antidepressants and anticonvulsants. Intravesical therapy is usually used as second-line treatment. Multiple forms of pharmacotherapy are often provided simultaneously to improve efficacy and time to response.

In vivo models of interstitial cystitis.

PURPOSE: We systematically identified and evaluated various animal models that have been studied to help identify the underlying mechanisms of and possible treatment options for interstitial cystitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Models of interstitial cystitis published between 1983 and 2001 were obtained by searching MEDLINE and other Internet databases using cystitis and model as the primary key words. Models with characteristics of interstitial cystitis similar to those defined by National Institutes of Arthritis, Diabetes, Digestive and Kidney Diseases criteria were reviewed. Some articles des…

Aspergillus species cystitis in a cat.

A Persian male cat with a history of lower urinary tract disease was presented because of polydipsia, polyuria, constipation and nasal discharge. Ten weeks before admission, the cat had been treated for lower urinary tract disease by catheterisation and flushing of the bladder. The animal was thin, dehydrated, anaemic and azotaemic. Urine culture revealed Aspergillus species cystitis. Antibodies against Aspergillus nidulans were identified in serum. Fluconazole was administered orally (7.5 mg/kg, q 12 h) for 10 consecutive weeks. The azotaemia was resolved, the kidney concentrating ability was…

[A diabetic patient with cystitis emphysematosa].

In a woman aged 80 years arriving in the Emergency Room with progressive malaise, anorexia and somnolence, a large resistance was found in the lower abdomen, which proved to be due to cystitis emphysematosa. The patient was known to suffer from non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus. Imaging revealed a large accumulation of gas in the urinary bladder, which was treated successfully with catheterization and antibiotics. Cystitis emphysematosa is a rare condition, characterized by collection of gas in the bladder and bladder wall and brought about by gas-forming micro-organisms that decompose g…

Is interstitial cystitis an infectious disease?

Interstitial cystitis (IC) is manifest by years of urinary frequency, urgency, and bladder pain and on cystoscopy, is diagnosed by petechial hemorrhages or ulcers. The etiology is unknown; the prominent theories are that IC is an autoimmune disease or is linked to increased permeability of the bladder mucosa. Although sought, no infectious agent has ever been identified. The disease has many characteristics of a chronic infection and the author's opinion is that an infectious disease has not been properly ruled out. To do so would require culture of bladder epithelium (not just urine) using sp…
