Dacryocystorhinostomy for dacryocystitis caused by methicillin- resistant Staphylococcus aureus: report of four cases.

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the outcome of dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) for dacryocystitis caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). CASES: Four otherwise healthy patients with dacryocystitis caused by MRSA were studied (3 with chronic dacryocystitis; 1, acute dacryocystitis). Ophthalmic symptoms were epiphora with purulent discharge in 2 cases, with blepharoconjunctivitis in 1 case, and with lacrimal fistula in 1 case. Culture of the purulent discharge from the affected conjunctival sacs revealed MRSA infection. Initial treatment, which was unsuccessful, included intravenously…

Multi-resistant Enterobacter cloacae dacryocystitis and preseptal cellulitis: case and review of literature.

A 61-year-old man with no significant past medical history presented to a quaternary ophthalmic referral center with acute right-sided medial canthal pain, periorbital edema, and erythema despite oral antibiotic therapy. CT imaging confirmed the presence of right preseptal cellulitis and lacrimal sac aspiration identified Enterobacter cloacae. A diagnosis of acute right-sided dacryocystitis with preseptal cellulitis was made. He was successfully treated with broadening of antibiotic therapy to intravenous meropenem. Symptomatic resolution was noted on follow-up without evidence of disease recu…

Recurrent dacryocystitis and lacrimocutaneous fistula caused by a retained Griffiths' collar button stent.

A 42-year-old man presented with a white plastic-like material exposed in the left medial canthal area, with a fistula and purulent discharge. He had undergone endonasal dacryocystorhinostomy 7 years earlier for left eye epiphora; he had persistent postoperative epiphora and recurrent dacryocystitis despite multiple drainage attempts and antibiotics elsewhere. Computed tomography showed bilateral enlarged cystic lacrimal sacs, with a well-defined contoured tunnel-like hole at the center of the left sac. Treatment included excision of the foreign body, which was a Griffiths' collar button nasol…

Non-contrast MR dacryocystography for the evaluation of epiphora and recurrent dacryocystitis: A preliminary study.

INTRODUCTION: Obstruction of the lacrimal drainage represents a common ophthalmologic issue. The blockage may interest any level of the lacrimal drainage pathway, and it is important to find the site of obstruction to plan the most appropriate treatment. In this study, findings from magnetic resonance (MR) dacryocystography were compared with findings from endoscopic and surgical procedures to evaluate the accuracy of MR dacryocystography in localizing the site of nasolacrimal duct obstruction. METHODS: We enrolled twenty-one patients with clinical suspicion of nasolacrimal duct obstruction w

Primary tubercular dacryocystitis - a case report and review of 18 cases from the literature.

Tuberculosis is an airborne communicable disease primarily affecting lungs. Primary tuberculosis of the lacrimal sac is very rare. A 15-year-old girl presented with bilateral epiphora for 8 months. Examination revealed bilateral nasolacrimal duct obstruction. During dacryocystorhinostomy, bone over lacrimal sac was found partially eroded. Lacrimal sac was found filled with caseous white material. Biopsy from the lacrimal sac revealed tubercular granulomas. Patient improved after anti-tubercular therapy. Abbreviations: PCR: polymerase chain reaction; NAAT: nucleic acid amplification test.

Surgical treatment of dacryocystitis caused by cystic dilatation of the nasolacrimal system in three dogs.

A 4-year-old castrated male Golden Retriever was referred for evaluation of intermittent purulent discharge from the right eye of 4-months' duration. A radiolucent area in the maxillary bone was detected on examination of skull radiographs. Dacryocystorhinography revealed pooling of contrast material in the radiolucent area. A rhinotomy was performed, and a large opening between the cystic structure of the nasolacrimal system and the nasal cavity was created. Epiphora resolved after surgery and had not recurred by 9 months after surgery. Two other dogs had cystic structures of the nasolacrimal

[Anatomical consideration for the injury of dacryocyst and nasolacrimal duct during intranasal sinus surgery].

Based on dissection and measurement on 20 adult head cadavers, there is the close relationship between lacrimal duct and lateral wall of the nasal cavity. The cells of anterior ethmoid sinus were classified into three degrees, according to the relationship between the anterior ethmoid sinus and the lacrimal sac fossa. The average distance is 6.74 +/- 1.72 mm between the nasolacrimal duct and the upper part of the uncinate process, 3.44 +/- 0.75 mm and 5.50 +/- 3.73 mm from the nasolacrimal duct to ethmoidal infundibulum and the maxillary ostium. The orifice of the duct most commonly opens unde
