A role of the shear-thinning property of thickened liquids used for supporting the dysphagia patients was examined utilizing the rheologically various properties of test liquids. The test liquids prepared through exploration of viscoelastic liquids were a Newtonian viscous liquid and non-Newtonian ones whose shear-thinning levels were different. For these test liquids, the flow experiments were performed with the swallowing model apparatus. The viscous effect in the flows in the apparatus was estimated by Stokes' law of resistance. The elastic effect, in other words, the elastic efficacy in th

INTRODUCTION: Eating and swallowing difficulties are prevalent and distressing among persons living with dementia (PLWD). These challenges may be especially burdensome for PLWD in lower-resourced settings, where environmental factors such as social support, health-care infrastructure, and food access are critical for meeting quality standards of eating and swallowing care. However, clinical practices and research methods have not sufficiently focused on the lived environment to promote high-quality, socially and culturally aligned management approaches.
METHODS: To address this gap, we develo

There is a high prevalence of dysphagia among patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and snoring. Swallowing is a complex process requiring fine-tuned neuromuscular coordination. Breathing and swallowing share a common passage in the pharynx. Swallowing process can be divided into an oral, pharyngeal and esophageal phase. When the swallowing reflex starts, hyoid and larynx are pulled up and the glottis covers the entrance to larynx. During swallowing apnea, which is a respiration pause for about 0.5-1.0 seconds, the bolus passes pharyngeal airway. Dysphagia is associated with severe compl

While many patients who present with dysphagia have a clinically identifiable cause of dysphagia, the etiology of swallowing difficulty is oftentimes a diagnostic enigma. The aim of this article is to review possible etiologies of dysphagia when objective evidence of dysphagia is lacking. Included in this discussion are cricopharyngeal spasm, retrograde cricopharyngeal dysfunction, muscle tension dysphagia, dysphagia secondary to medications, and functional dysphagia.

UNLABELLED: Surface electromyography (sEMG) could be used for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes in various health conditions. For example, sEMG biofeedback is shown to be beneficial in adults with swallowing disorders (dysphagia), whereas there are no easily identifiable studies to support such evidence in paediatrics. The current review aimed to evaluate the feasibility of implementing sEMG during swallowing tasks in paediatric populations with various diagnoses. Additionally, the review aimed to describe findings in publications involving participants with cerebral palsy (CP) and dysphagia

OBJECTIVE: Flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES) is widely performed to determine the safety of oral intake. However, evaluation results can vary among examiners depending on their experience. To analyze the impact of such differences, we investigated the diet provided for patients with swallowing impairment evaluated by experienced and inexperienced examiners.
METHODS: We included 20 subjects with swallowing impairment. They underwent FEES twice, once by an experienced examiner (EE) and once by an inexperienced examiner (IE), in random order. The second FEES was generally perfo

INTRODUCTION: Chin-tuck are effective in patients with dysphagia, where aspiration can occur due to pharyngeal swallowing delays. This study aims to verify whether Chin-tuck Assistant System Maneuver (CAS-M) supplemented with Chin-Tuck Maneuver (CTM) is effective for learning and maintaining correct chin-tuck postures. In addition, we investigated the possibility of using CAS-M as a customized rehabilitation treatment program for patients with poor cognitive ability, attention issues, and general swallowing disorders.
INTERVENTION: To demonstrate the effectiveness of CAS, we recruited 52 heal

PURPOSE: Exercise-based treatments may improve swallowing safety and efficiency; yet, it is not clearly understood which factors predict nonadherence to recommended treatment protocols. The aim of this study was to construct an algorithm for stratifying risk of nonadherence to a lingual strengthening dysphagia treatment program.
METHOD: Using recursive partitioning, we created a classification tree built from a pool of sociodemographic, clinical, and functional status indicators to identify risk groups for nonadherence to an intensive lingual strengthening treatment program. Nonadherence, or

BACKGROUND: Dysphagia is a common symptom of Parkinson's disease (PD). A delay in laryngeal vestibule closure (LVC) and a reduction in tongue pressure, may affect swallowing safety and increase the risk of pulmonary aspiration.
OBJECTIVE: To verify the relationship between tongue pressure and airway protection in PD patients: (1) comparing tongue pressure measures and physiological events in the pharyngeal phase of swallowing between PD and controls and (2) analysing the association between tongue pressure and LVC in the PD group.
METHODS: Twenty-three patients with idiopathic PD (64.9 years

BACKGROUND: Swallowing dysfunction (dysphagia) significantly impacts patient and medical outcomes. In Sweden, there is no comprehensive outcome measure for dysphagia that incorporates holistic assessment and dysphagia impact on a person's impairment, function and participation. The Dysphagia Outcome and Severity Scale (DOSS) was developed and validated (in English) and incorporates the World Health Organisation's (WHO) aforementioned, International Classification of Functioning (ICF) aspects. This study translated then evaluated the validity and reliability of the Swedish version, DOSS-S.

OBJECTIVES: Diminished pharyngeal constriction is a common biomechanical deficit associated with dysphagia and holds strong predictive value for aspiration. Pharyngeal squeeze manoeuvre (PSM) was previously validated for evaluating pharyngeal constriction on endoscopy. However, PSM is not routinely used in laryngology clinics or flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES) protocols worldwide. This study explored PSM in the acute care setting and its relationship with swallowing safety and efficiency, other swallowing biomechanical functions, and clinical outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Dermatomyositis (DM) is a rare autoimmune disease characterized by distinctive skin rash, muscle inflammation with symmetrical and progressive muscle weakness, and elevated serum levels of muscle-associated enzymes. DM may affect skeletal muscles involved in swallowing, leading to dysphagia, which can negatively impact individual's physical and psychosocial well-being. Despite this, dysphagia in patients with DM remains poorly understood. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the prevalence and clinical features of dysphagia in patients with DM and juvenile DM

BACKGROUND: The use of ultrasound as an adjunct to clinical swallowing evaluation provides quantitative physiological and morphological data. As a low-risk procedure, ultrasound imaging can be performed outside of a medical setting. This is particularly important for patients living in rural areas with restricted access to a hospital. Technical advances have produced pocket-sized ultrasound technology that is more affordable, and therefore within the fiscal reach of most allied health services.
AIMS: To explore the validity and reliability of pocket-sized ultrasound technology in dysphagia as

Many studies include functional swallowing ability and quality of life information to indicate a response to a specific swallowing intervention or to describe the natural history of dysphagia across diseases and conditions. Study results are difficult to interpret because the association between these factors and actual swallowing impairment is not understood. We set out to test the associations between components of physiologic swallowing impairment, functional swallowing ability, and swallow-specific quality of life using standardized and validated measurement tools: Modified Barium Swallow

Dysphagia causes aspiration symptoms and can trigger aspiration pneumonia, poor nutritional status, etc. To address these risks, it is important to properly evaluate dysphagia and link it with treatment and training. However, current dysphagia evaluation methods cannot assess a swallowing function equivalent to that in daily life, owing to the examination method and environment. In this study, we analyzed bio-signal features to realize a system that can detect aspiration symptoms in daily life. Focusing on the neck electrical impedance, swallowing sounds, and a surface electromyogram of the su
