The electrocochleographic changes which occurred during glycerol dehydration in an ear affected by endolymphatic hydrops due to Menière's disease are discussed. This single case study is reported because the recordings were large and stable, and because they clearly showed the electrocochleographic abnormality associated with endolymphatic hydrops; namely, a large summating potential (SP) in relation to the action potential (AP). After dehydration a dramatic improvement occurred in both the pure tone and speech audiogram. The electrocochleogram showed a decrease in the SP amplitude and little …

Results were provided for propylene oxide "cold sterilization" of dehydrated mashed potato granules that contained 7% moisture and 0.044% chloride. Treatment with an optimum concentration of 0.1% w/w sterilant for 6 days at 22 degrees C gave a bacterial count reduction from 3.4 X 10(5) to less than 5 X 10(3), a low glycol residue of 29 ppm, and 12 ppm of chlorohydrin, with the 1-chloro-2-propanol isomer constituting 94% of the total. This indicated that, in spite of the granule pH of 5.62, nucleophilic attack in dehydrated granules involves nonprotonated propylene oxide. Based on NMR analysis,

Pervaporation provides a selective route to high purity solvents that are indispensable for high precision industry. Here, we introduce stru … Om achieves a remarkable flux of 18.4 kg·m-2·h-1, highlighting the potential for industrial solvent dehydration. These complementary structural properties enable rapid and highly selective transport via densely packed sieving channels and interconnected internal pathways, providing atomistic insight into how carbon microenvironment and stacking structure regu …

BACKGROUND Severe hypercalcemia is a life-threatening medical emergency. Its possible etiologies are hyperparathyroidism, malignancy, chronic granulomatous diseases, vitamin D intoxication, medication (lithium, thiazine, excessive vitamin A), hyperthyroidism, acromegaly, adrenal insufficiency, pheochromocytoma, milk-alkali syndrome, and immobilization. Dehydration is considered a consequence of hypercalcemia but not the etiology. CASE REPORT We present a case of a 50-year-old woman who presented with headache, nausea, dizziness, and profound weakness, with a serum calcium level of 17.3 mg/dL d…

Corneal allogenic intrastromal ring segments (CAIRS) are semicircular pieces of donor corneal stroma, which may be surgically implanted to flatten keratoconic corneas. These segments can be trimmed to different thicknesses; whereas thicker segments confer greater flattening, their bulk renders them more technically challenging to insert. Consequently, thinner segments are often preferred, especially for starting surgeons. Here, we describe a technique for transiently thinning CAIRS to facilitate easy insertion, thereby permitting the use of thicker segments to achieve the maximal flattening ef

Terminal sterilization of hydrogel-based biomaterials is crucial for their clinically relevant applications. The authors synthesized nonfouling zwitterionic hydrogels consisting of carboxybetaine (CB) acrylamide monomer and a carboxybetaine dimethacrylate crosslinker. The mechanical and biological stability of nonfouling hydrogels were investigated using three main terminal sterilization techniques, i.e., steam autoclave, ethylene oxide gas, and gamma irradiation. It was found that CB hydrogels are very stable at high temperature and pressure and in oxidative gas environments without changing

A 17-year-old male presented with acute hemolysis with stomatocytosis, elevated mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), and osmotic gradient ektacytometry consistent with marked erythrocyte dehydration. Erythrocytes from both parents also demonstrated evidence of dehydration with elevated MCHC and abnormal ektacytometry, but neither to the degree of the patient. Genetic studies revealed the patient had hereditary xerocytosis (HX) due to a novel PIEZO1 mutation inherited from his mother and hemoglobin C (HbC) trait inherited from his father. HbC trait accentuated the erythrocyte dehyd…

INTRODUCTION: Neonatal hypernatermic dehydration (NHD) is a potentially very serious condition, which has been reported to occur in infants who have breast feeding problems in the first week of the life. This study looked at the incidence, risk factors, clinical symptoms and complications of NHD in healthy breastfed term neonates.
METHODS: A prospective case-control study was conducted on 53 neonates with serum sodium concentrations of >or=150 mmol/L (as the case group) who were recruited between June 2006 and June 2007 from the Ghaem hospital (Mashhad, Iran) to investigate the relationship b…

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to determine the incidence of significant weight loss, dehydration, hypernatremia and hyperbilirubinemia in exclusively breast-fed term healthy neonates and compare the incidence of these problems in the warm and cool months.
METHODS: During the study period 496 neonates were recruited.
RESULTS: 157 neonates (31.6%) had significant weight loss (> 10 % cumulative weight loss or per day weight loss > 5%). Clinical dehydration was present in 2.2% of neonates. Of these 157 neonates, 31.8% had hypernatremia and 28 % had hyperbilirubinemia.
CONCLUSION: The inci…
