Revisiting epilepsy and the electroencephalogram patterns in Angelman syndrome.

Angelman syndrome is a neurogenetic disorder that severely affects global neurodevelopment due to modifications in the structure or functioning of UBE3A gene. Its prevalence ranges from 1:10,000 to 1:40,000. There are four main genetic types of AS transmission. A maternal deletion in 15q11.2-q13 is the most common type. There are three well-established electroencephalogram (EEG) patterns used as an ancillary tool for AS diagnosis. The main objectives are to scrutinize the EEG patterns in Angelman syndrome, their correlation to different types of seizures and to review the role of the EEG as an

Radiofrequency ablation of persistent left superior vena cava with left double accessory pathways: a case report and systematic review.

PURPOSE: Ablation of the persistent left superior vena cava (PLSVC) with a left accessory pathway is more difficult than ablation in the case of an ordinary left accessory pathway. We report a case of successful ablation of the PLSVC with a left double accessory pathway. We also conducted a systematic review of the literature to summarize the procedural precautions and technical points for patients with PLSVC with a left accessory pathway. OBSERVATION: A 48-year-old man was admitted with recurrent episodes of tachycardia. Electrocardiography revealed preexcitation. Preoperative echocardiograp

Brain, interrupted: alpha/delta EEG ratio in survivors of pre- and post-natal adversity.

RESULTS: Young adults born at extremely low birth weight (prenatal adversity; N = 64, Mage = 23.14 years, SDage = 1.26 years) had a lower alpha/delta ratio score compared to normal birth weight controls (N = 76, Mage = 23.60 years, SDage = 1.09 years), while youth exposed to child maltreatment (postnatal adversity; N = 39, Mage = 16.18 years, SDage = 1.15) had a higher alpha/delta ratio compared to controls (N = 23, Mage = 16.00 years, SDage = 1.50 years). CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that being exposed to pre- and post-natal adversity may have different long-term consequences on brain de

Theta and delta band activity explain N2 and P3 ERP component activity in a go/no-go task.

OBJECTIVES: Recent work indicates that the feedback negativity and P3 components from gambling feedback tasks can be understood as mixtures of functionally distinct processes occurring separately in theta and delta frequency bands. The current study was conducted to assess whether dissociable processes occurring in the theta and delta bands would similarly account for activity underlying N2 and P3 components in a go/no-go task. METHODS: The current study measured EEG signals from 66 participants during a go/no-go task, and a time-frequency principal components analysis decomposition approach

Comparison of focally induced epileptiform activities in C57BL/6 and BALB/c mice by using in vivo EEG recording.

Epilepsy characterized by repeated seizures is influenced by genetic factors. Seizure response of inbred mouse strains changes depending on the variety of stimuli including chemical (e.g., pentylenetetrazole, nicotine, cocaine, NMDA, kainate), physical (e.g., auditory) or electrical. In this study, we compared the susceptibilities of C57BL/6 and BALB/c mice strains to penicillin induced epileptiform activity (a focally induced, experimental epilepsy model), by analyzing the spike onset latency, spike amplitude and spike frequency. The power spectrums of baseline EEGs were also investigated. We

EEG findings during basilar migraine attacks in children.

We present clinical and EEG findings in 4 children with basilar migraine (BM) (three female and one male, age 11 to 13.5 years). All patients had an EEG during the acute attack and a follow-up EEG within 4 to 18 days. In two patients the EEG, done within 4 h of the onset of symptoms (initial stage), showed diffuse polymorphic subdelta-delta activity. In two other children the EEG, performed 16 h after the onset of symptoms, showed delta-theta activity predominant over the occipital regions. Resolution of these abnormalities during follow-up was observed in all patients. We wish to stress the d

[EEG changes in early summer meningoencephalitis].

The nature and extent of EEG changes in 114 patients with tick-borne encephalitis were reported. The diagnosis was confirmed by the clinical picture, as well as the pathological increase in cells in the liquor and serologically by positive Ig-M titres. EEG findings were compared in patients with or without involvement of the brain. The EEG revealed pathological results in 76 patients, whereby the dominant pathological change was frequently occurring synchronous bursts of generalized slow bilateral waves. 12 patients with involvement of the brain all showed pathological EEG changes, a much high

[Periodic EEG discharges of stereotyped morphology].

Clinical course of disease and results of EEG examinations of 6 patients with severe brain disturbances of various aetiology provided grounds for discussion on the phenomenon of periodic stereotyped EEG discharges (PSD) which is of considerable diagnostic value in some cases. The variability in appearance of these discharges, in their form and duration of intervals between them are stressed--the last parameter varied in own material from 0.5 to 8 sec. The appearance of PSD may indicate increased convulsive excitability of the cortical and subcortical structures of the gray matter. The prognost

Cross-frequency interaction of the eye-movement related LFP signals in V1 of freely viewing monkeys.

Recent studies have emphasized the functional role of neuronal activity underlying oscillatory local field potential (LFP) signals during visual processing in natural conditions. While functionally relevant components in multiple frequency bands have been reported, little is known about whether and how these components interact with each other across the dominant frequency bands. We examined this phenomenon in LFP signals obtained from the primary visual cortex of monkeys performing voluntary saccadic eye movements (EMs) on still images of natural-scenes. We identified saccade-related changes

Electroencephalographic findings in anti-N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor encephalitis in children: A series of 12 patients.

OBJECTIVE: Anti-N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor encephalitis (a-NMDARe) is an acute or subacute encephalopathy where electroencephalogram (EEG) is frequently obtained as part of the workup. Although no diagnostic EEG finding has been described so far, the definition of specific or typical patterns might help to distinguish this group among various encephalopathies of childhood. We examined EEG recordings of our patients with a-NMDARe in order to describe the most frequent findings. METHODS: Clinical and laboratory data and digital EEG recordings of 12 pediatric patients diagnosed with a-NMDARe

Detailed spectral profile analysis of electrocorticograms during freezing against penicillin-induced epileptiform discharges in the anesthetized rat.

OBJECTIVES: Cryosurgery is an alternative technique for minimally invasive treatment of lesions. We have recently examined cryosurgery for epilepsy in animal models, and found that penicillin G (PG)-induced epileptiform discharges (EDs) mostly vanished after freezing. However, EDs were provoked again after insufficient freezing. Inadequate freezing is not visually detectable during and just after freezing and is not predictable beforehand. To manage this problem, we examined whether intraoperative monitoring of electrocorticograms (ECoGs) can predict recurrence of EDs after cryosurgery. METHO

Electroencephalographic sleep in spousal bereavement and bereavement-related depression of late life.

Although spousal bereavement in late life is common and frequently leads to major depression, the boundary between bereavement without a depressive syndrome and bereavement-related depression has been insufficiently studied from a physiological perspective. Because other forms of depression are associated with physiological changes, including sleep, we have attempted to clarify the relationship of bereavement and bereavement-related depression by investigating electroencephalographic (EEG) sleep in 31 elderly volunteers with recent spousal bereavement, stratified by the presence (n = 15) or th

Lateralized Rhythmic Delta Activity in Patients With Infectious or Autoimmune Insular Lesions.

INTRODUCTION: Lateralized rhythmic delta activity (LRDA) is a rare pattern on the ictal-interictal continuum (IIC) encountered in critically ill patients. Its association with acute seizures is yet to be fully explored. Insular involvement is a common finding in patients with infectious and autoimmune encephalitis. The association between acute insular lesions and the ictal-interictal continuum, particularly LRDA, has not been explored before. METHODS: A case series of 4 patients with either herpetic or autoimmune encephalitis and prominent insular cortex involvement who had LRDA when monitor

Electroencephalographic sleep profiles in recurrent depression. A longitudinal investigation.

The electroencephalographic sleep profile of a group of recurrent depressives who had been depressed for less than four weeks was compared with their sleep profile in a prior episode of depression. The findings in these 19 cases indicate that early in the episode, rapid eye movement (REM) sleep findings are more abnormal, including shortened REM latency, REM sleep percent, and REM activity. Other sleep variables, such as sleep continuity measures and decreased delta-wave sleep, are abnormal in a similar fashion in both episodes. The results are not explainable on the basis of clinical severity

[Inhibition with light flashes of negative delta-waves in the rabbit visual cortex].

To elucidate the nature of negative and positive phases of background delta-waves (BDW), their interaction with evoked potentials was studied in the rabbit visual cortex. BDW appeared after injection of drugs synchronizing ECoG: amyzyl, aminozin, barbiturates, and during asphyxia. The flashes evoked slow positive responses lasting about 0.5 to 1.0 s. These responses blocked the negative BDW. The results of the study and published data suggest that background delta-activity consists of segments which reflect the desynchronized state and correspond to positive BDW, and of segments which reflect

Simultaneous fMRI-EEG-Based Characterisation of NREM Parasomnia Disease: Methods and Limitations.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) techniques and electroencephalography (EEG) were used to investigate sleep with a focus on impaired arousal mechanisms in disorders of arousal (DOAs). With a prevalence of 2-4% in adults, DOAs are significant disorders that are currently gaining attention among physicians. The paper describes a simultaneous EEG and fMRI experiment conducted in adult individuals with DOAs (n=10). Both EEG and fMRI data were validated by reproducing well established EEG and fMRI associations. A method for identification of both brain functional areas and EEG rhythms a

New observation of electrocardiogram during sinus rhythm on the atriofascicular and decremental atrioventricular pathways/clinical perspective: [corrected] terminal QRS [corrected] complex slurring or notching.

BACKGROUND: Atriofascicular and decremental atrioventricular pathways are variants of accessory pathways with anterograde decremental conduction properties. They result in typical wide Quantronic Resonance System (QRS) tachycardia of left bundle branch block morphology. Data on the sinus rhythm electrocardiographic characteristics are limited. METHODS AND RESULTS: Thirty patients with accessory pathways of anterograde decremental conduction properties were studied retrospectively (10 atriofascicular pathways and 20 decremental atrioventricular pathways). All patients had a pre-excited atriove

Molecular and electrophysiological evidence for "remodeling" of the L-type Ca2+ channel in persistent atrial fibrillation in humans.

Persistent atrial fibrillation (AF) is associated with shortened action potential duration (APD) and reduced atrial refractoriness. Remodeling of ion currents responsible for AP morphology has been proposed as a major mechanism in persistent AF. In the present study we investigated the activity of the cardiac L-type Ca2+ channel and the mRNA transcription of the cardiac L-type Ca2+ channel subunits in patients with persistent AF compared to patients in sinus rhythm (SR). Right atrial appendages of 10 patients in SR and of 5 patients with AF were used for myocyte isolations to record L-type Ca2
