Scleroderma and dentistry: Two case reports.

BACKGROUND: Scleroderma is a chronic connective tissue disorder with unknown etiology. It is characterized by excessive deposition of extracellular matrix in the connective tissues causing vascular disturbances which can result in tissue hypoxia. These changes are manifested as atrophy of the skin and/or mucosa, subcutaneous tissue, muscles, and internal organs. Such changes can be classified into two types, namely, morphea (localized) and diffuse (systemic). Morphea can manifest itself as hemifacial atrophy (Parry-Romberg syndrome) although this remains debatable. Hence, we present a case of

Bone augmentation procedures in implant dentistry.

PURPOSE: This review evaluated (1) the success of different surgical techniques for the reconstruction of edentulous deficient alveolar ridges and (2) the survival/success rates of implants placed in the augmented areas. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Clinical investigations published in English involving more than 10 consecutively treated patients and mean follow-up of at least 12 months after commencement of prosthetic loading were included. The following procedures were considered: onlay bone grafts, sinus floor elevation via a lateral approach, Le Fort I osteotomy with interpositional grafts, spl

Sports dentistry--what's it all about?

UNLABELLED: This paper provides an overview of dental conditions that commonly affect individuals competing in all levels of sport. Athletes represent a group of individuals who possess specific risk factors for various dental diseases and related injuries. These patients are at greater risk of dental caries, dental erosion and traumatic dental injuries. Therefore, a clear understanding of these conditions is vital for those practitioners who are involved in the dental care of these patients. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The early diagnosis and management of dental conditions that affect athletes will

Risk management aspects of implant dentistry.

PURPOSE: To categorize and review complications related to implant dentistry that have resulted in legal actions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The records of 61 patients (39 women and 22 men) were retrospectively evaluated according to a structured form. Ages ranged from 28 years to 78 years (mean 49 +/- 12 years). The time lag in months between actual damage and legal action ranged from 0 months to 60 months (mean 12.7 months). RESULTS: Implant type, length, width, and locations varied widely and had no impact on the liability report. Half of the lawsuits were filed as a result of actual body dam…

Restorative dentistry using a multidisciplinary approach.

Multidisciplinary treatment was essential for this patient to optimally manage the occlusion and missing teeth. When the space distribution was completed, ridge management procedures for pontic site development were accomplished. The final restorative treatment required was actually minimized to a 7-unit fixed partial denture. It was apparent the multidisciplinary treatment was essential to predictably manage this patient by decreasing risk and ensuring a long-term strategy for enhanced patient satisfaction.

Aviation dentistry: current concepts and practice.

BACKGROUND: With the growing number of air passengers, flight attendants, leisure pilots as well as military and airline pilots, dentists may increasingly encounter flight-related oral conditions requiring treatment. Moreover, dentists should prevent the creation of in-flight hazards when treating aircrew members. The aim of this article is to introduce the concepts of aviation (aerospace) medicine and dentistry. METHODS: Data were gathered to cover the following issues: head and facial barotraumas (barotrauma-related headache, external otitic barotrauma, barosinusitis and barotitis-media), d…

Oral triazolam sedation in implant dentistry.

Triazolam can be helpful for sedating dental implant patients when administered orally or sublingually in low dosages of 0.125 or 0.25 mg, but not exceeding 0.5 mg. It is a fast- but short-acting benzodiazepine with few side effects, and it has a long record of successful use. Its effects can be reversed with incremental intravenous flumazenil, although there is a risk of seizure. Triazolam has not been shown to be carcinogenic, and it has a low potential for abuse and addiction. It is contraindicated in patients who are pregnant, breast-feeding, and those concomitantly taking ethanol, macroli

Good occlusal practice in children's dentistry.

The difference between paediatric dentistry and most other branches of dentistry is that in the child the occlusion is changing. Consequently 'Good Occlusal Practice' in children is a matter of making the right clinical decisions for the future occlusion. The clinician needs to be able to predict the influence that different treatment options will have on the occlusion when the child's development is complete.

Cat-scratch disease: considerations for dentistry.

BACKGROUND: Cat-scratch disease, or CSD, results from inoculation of the gram-negative bacillus Bartonella henselae via a cat's scratch. A regional lymphadenitis, which usually is cervical, develops and may progress to suppuration. It is necessary to differentiate CSD from other lymphadenopathies. CASE DESCRIPTION: A patient who had close contact with a cat subsequently developed a localized, suppurative cervical lymphadenitis. As B. henselae was identified in 1992, the authors were able to confirm the existence of CSD serologically. Surgical drainage resulted in a successful resolution of th
