Inflammatory fibrous hyperplasia treated with a modified vestibuloplasty: a case report.

AIM: The purpose of this report is to present a case of surgical and prosthetic treatment of a woman with inflammatory fibrous hyperplasia (IFH) and her evaluation during a six month period. BACKGROUND: IFH is a benign pathology, prevalent in female patients, and principally associated with ill-fitting prosthetic devices in need of adjustment. It is common for patients to require surgical removal of the hyperplastic tissue and fabrication of a new prosthesis. CASE REPORT: A 55-year-old female with a history of smoking presented with a chief complaint of missing the scheduled adjustment of he

Prosthodontic Management of Xerostomic Patient: A Technical Modification.

Xerostomia is often a contributing factor in both minor and serious health problems. It can affect nutrition and dental as well as psychological health. Common problems faced by such patients are glossitis, mucositis, angular cheilitis, dysgeusia, and difficulty in chewing and swallowing. One of the major problems associated with xerostomic patients is the poor tolerance and retention of removable dental prostheses because of thin dry atrophic mucosa and lack of a saliva film. This paper describes a new technique of incorporating a salivary reservoir in the maxillary complete denture. The sali

In Vitro Analysis of Shear Stress: CAD Milled vs Printed Denture Base Resins with Bonded Denture Tooth.

PURPOSE: As the fabrication of computer-aided design (CAD) milled and 3D printed denture base resins with bonded denture teeth increase in popularity, there is a need for research comparing the shear bond stress of milled and printed denture base resins with bonded denture teeth to that of a conventional heat processed denture base. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Denture base resin specimens (n = 9) were fabricated according to manufacturers' instructions using a novel test design. Two milled (Ivobase CAD PMMA, Ivoclar Vivadent and Polident PMMA, Polident Dental) and two 3D printed (Denture Base LP R

Vital root retention: a clinical procedure.

Retention of vital roots retards the resorption of residual alveolar ridges under complete dentures. It also eliminates the patient's responsibility of maintaining the periodontal health of overdenture abutments. The procedure involves (1) preparing the teeth to be retained from a periodontal standpoint to reduce the possibility of contamination of the surgical site, (2) removing hopeless teeth, (3) sectioning and contouring the teeth so that the retained roots are contiguous with the crestal bone, (4) preparing and suturing labial and lingual flaps to cover the prepared roots and maintain pro

Prosthetic Lip with the Retentive Attachment for a Unilateral Cleft Lip Patient: A Clinical Report.

Patients afflicted with congenital cleft lip defect experience disfigured facial esthetics and lack of oral competency that could reduce the speech intelligibility. Rehabilitation of such cosmetic deformities condition often encountered with dental abnormalities becomes the challenge. When surgical treatment is not desired, prosthetic reconstruction turns out to be an economical option. This clinical treatment describes the fabrication of a maxillary lip prosthesis supported by a cast partial denture retained with magnetic attachment in a cleft lip patient. The use of intraoral magnets placed

Prosthetic treatment of congenital hard and soft palate defects.

Obturator prostheses are used to improve mastication, speech, and swallowing by reestablishing oronasal separation and aesthetics in maxillary defect patients. A sectional and magnetically retained functional removable speech bulb prosthesis was planned to treat the congenitally cleft hard and soft palates of this patient. The obturator part, localized into lateral nasal undercuts covered with sound mucosa, was used to retain the complete denture. Two pieces of the prosthesis were joined together by a magnet in the mouth. A special hinge mechanism was added to join the complete denture and fun

Trends in Denture Insurance Claims and Their Association With Socioeconomic Indicators and Population Aging in Japan.

OBJECTIVES: To describe nationwide temporal trends in insurance-covered denture claims in Japan and examine their associations with prefectural socioeconomic indicators and population aging using the National Database of Health Insurance Claims and Specific Health Checkups (NDB). BACKGROUND: Japan is experiencing rapid population aging while tooth retention among older adults is improving. How these demographic and oral-health changes are reflected in the provision of insurance-covered complete dentures and removable partial dentures (RPDs) remains unclear. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prefectur

Custom-made resin-bonded attachments supporting a removable partial denture using the spark erosion technique: a case report.

A removable partial denture supported by resin-bonded precision attachments was constructed for a patient with intraoral symptoms of a cleidocranial dysostosis. Because of the anatomic situation, the youth, and the preprosthetic orthodontic treatment of the patient, a conventional prosthetic solution seemed inappropriate. Custom-made attachments were constructed with the spark erosion technique. They were fixed to the abutment teeth with resin-bonded retainers. The combination of the resin-bonding technique with the modern technology of spark erosion thus allowed a conservative approach to the

[Extension implantations as an aid in defect-restoring prosthodontics].

Because of a lack of denture retention, great difficulties are often encountered in edentulous patients who require prosthetic treatment of defects in the maxillo-facial region. The use of enossal implants may enable temporary rehabilitation with regard to mastication and speech. The possible range of indication is considerably limited in cases of extensive defects of the alveolar process, advanced atrophy and by radiological therapy of malignant tumors. The duration of therapeutic success is contingent upon most accurate implantation techniques and prosthetic treatment as well as the patient'

Implant-Supported, Bar-Retained Maxillary Overdenture and Mandibular Implant-Supported, Metal-Acrylic Resin, Screw-Retained, Fixed Complete Denture on an Edentulous Patient: Case Report.

Most edentulous patients prefer fixed restoration or detachable prostheses over conventional complete dentures. The case report aims to address and discuss the clinical and laboratory steps of implant-supported, bar-retained maxillary overdenture and mandibular implant-supported, metal-acrylic resin, screw-retained, fixed complete denture. Impression techniques and laboratory steps are discussed and demonstrated to minimize the postfabrication or insertion complication. It lets you achieve the passive fit of the prosthesis that maintains the osseointegration by reducing stress on implants and

A modified technique for retention of orbital prosthesis.

An orbital defect (congenital or acquired) causes severe facial asymmetry and disfigurement, which results in psychological and social disturbances to the patient. It becomes a challenging task for a maxillofacial prosthodontist to fabricate a prosthesis that replicates the healthy side of the face. Success of the prosthesis depends primarily on satisfactory retention of the same. This clinical report illustrates rehabilitation of a patient with an orbital defect by fabricating a hollow orbital prosthesis, utilizing anatomical undercuts for retention using an acrylic resin template relined by

Clinical considerations for adhesive bridgework.

Many dental practitioners do not use adhesive bridges because of concerns over high failure rates. Techniques for these restorations should be based on the fundamental principles of bridge design which require rigid, accurately fitting frameworks and careful control of the occlusion. The abutments generally require little if any tooth preparation. Greater security will result from more extensive coverage of abutment teeth: the routine use of relative axial tooth movement is a predictable method for creating the space that this approach requires.

Can Different Impression Techniques Affect the Chewing Efficiency of Mandibular Implant-Retained Overdentures?

Several impression techniques and theories have been developed for implant-retained overdentures, each with its own set of advantages and limitations. This study aimed to assess the chewing efficiency of mandibular implant-retained overdentures fabricated using three distinct impression techniques (mucofunctional, selective, and minimal pressure impression techniques). Twenty-six patients with complete edentulism free from any oral or systemic disease were selected to participate in the study. Three complete mandibular implant-retained overdentures were constructed for each patient, and groupe

Prosthodontic rehabilitation of a patient with total avulsion of the maxilla: a clinical report.

Patients with complete avulsion of the palate may require extensive surgical and prosthodontic rehabilitation. The prosthesis should replace not only missing teeth but also lost soft tissues and bone, including the hard palate, residual alveolar ridges, and in some situations, the soft palate. This clinical report describes the prosthetic rehabilitation, after appropriate surgical options had been exhausted, of a patient with bilateral traumatic avulsion of the maxilla.

Rat palatal histology related to denture-like appliances.

Two designs of palatal denture-like appliance were fitted to rats. Tooth- and tissue-borne appliances caused changes in epithelial thickness and keratin thickness, but these varied with anatomical site and type of appliance. A single inoculation of Candida albicans at the time of insertion of the appliance failed to establish infection consistently. Debris accumulation under the appliances was a problem which will restrict long-term studies with this model.

Prosthodontic treatment for patients with large mandibular defects; porous hydroxyapatite grafts.

It is difficult for both prosthodontists and their patients with large marginal defects to achieve a satisfactory prosthodontic result, because retention, support, and stability of the prosthesis are limited and recovery of esthetics is unsatisfactory owing to large mandibular defects. Alveolar ridge augmentation therapy is performed to compensate for such problems. We have experienced a good prognosis of prosthodontic treatment for over 10 years in two patients with large marginal defects of the partially edentulous mandible, who had undergone grafting of porous hydroxyapatite blocks to their
