STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to identify differences in perioperative outcomes between ambulatory patients with neuromuscular scoliosis (ANMS) and adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) following spinal fusion.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: NMS patients have severe curves with more comorbidities and procedural complexity. These patients require extensive fusion levels, increased blood loss, and suffer increased periop complications. However, NMS patients have a variable severity spectrum, including ambulation status.
METHODS: Chart and radiographic revie

Centenarians (persons aged 100years and older) are one of the fastest growing cohorts in countries across the world. With the increasing prevalence of centenarians and growing amount of clinical information in large administrative health databases, it is now possible to more fully characterize the health of this unique and heterogeneous population. This study described patterns of health deficits in the centenarian population receiving care from community-based home care services and long-term care facilities (LTCFs) in Ontario, Canada. All centenarians who received home care and were assessed

A 58-year-old woman presented with multiple fragility fractures nine months after a a pertrochanteric hip fracture in the context of severe osteoporosis. Despite initial treatment with alendronate, calcium and cholecalciferol, she presented new pelvic and vertebral fractures, associated with persistently low vitamin D levels related to irregular treatment adherence. From premorbid functional independence, she developed severe disability, with loss of autonomous ambulation and dependence for basic activities of daily living. A multidisciplinary approach, focused on optimization of pharmacologic

Permanent pacemaker placement may be associated with several complications. This case report describes an 86-year-old male with a history of pacemaker placement five weeks prior, who presented to the emergency department via ambulance with concerns for acute occlusive myocardial infarction on electrocardiogram. He was found to have pericardial tamponade secondary to the puncture of the right ventricular wall by the pacer wire. This case report represents a rare, life-threatening complication of pacemaker placement. Recognition of this complication by emergency physicians is imperative and can

BACKGROUND: Syme amputation (SA) is a term used to describe an amputation at the level of the ankle joint in which the heel pad is preserved. It is performed for a number of indications in a pediatric population. SA is purported to hold the advantage of allowing weight bearing without a prosthesis. A limb length discrepancy (LLD) is useful for ambulation without a prosthesis but can be restrictive with regards to the fitting of modern prostheses.
METHODS: A voluntary survey was distributed to persons living with SA. Recruitment occurred through hospital electronic database and electronic adve

Brown tumours may occur secondary to hyperparathyroidism in patients with chronic renal failure (CRF). Diagnosing a spinal brown tumour causing cord compression requires a high index of suspicion. We report a 65-year-old woman, who had been on haemodialysis for CRF for over 10 years, who presented with leg weakness and back pain over the thoracolumbar junction. She had a brown tumour at T8 causing subacute spinal cord compression. Ambulation was regained after surgical decompression and stabilisation. Adherence to the National Kidney Foundation guidelines in the management of patients with CRF

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Improving functional mobility is often a desired outcome for adolescents with cerebral palsy (CP). Traditional neurorehabilitation approaches are frequently directed at impairments; however, improvements may not be carried over into functional mobility. The purpose of this case report was to describe the examination, intervention, and outcomes of a task-oriented physical therapy intervention program to improve dynamic balance, functional mobility, and dual-task performance in an adolescent with CP.
CASE DESCRIPTION: The participant was a 15-year-old girl with spastic t

We have recently described the dose-response effect of anandamide (AEA), the N-amide derivative of arachidonic acid that acts as an endogenous ligand for the cannabinoid receptor, on extrapyramidal function. The present study has been designed to examine the time-course of this effect. To this end, adult male rats were submitted to an acute i.p. injection of AEA, delta9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) or vehicle and examined at different times after drug administration. Animals were tested in an open-field test, then sacrificed and their striata used for analyses of dopaminergic indices. Results we

Male genital lymphedema is a rare condition characterized by progressive enlargement of the scrotal and penile tissues. It is associated with substantial physical and psychological morbidity, frequently impairing urinary and sexual function, hygiene, and ambulation. Genital lymphedema may result from secondary lymphatic obstruction to infectious, inflammatory, neoplastic, congenital, or iatrogenic causes. Despite its clinical impact, no standardized diagnostic or therapeutic algorithm has been established to date. Herein, we present our diagnostic approach and describe a surgical technique inv

Duchenne muscular dystrophy is a neuromuscular disease caused by DMD gene mutations that result in an absence of functional dystrophin protein. Patients with Duchenne experience progressive muscle weakness, are typically wheelchair dependent by their early teens, and develop respiratory and cardiac complications that lead to death in their twenties or thirties. Becker muscular dystrophy is also caused by DMD gene mutations, but symptoms are less severe and progression is slower compared with Duchenne. We describe a case study of a patient with Becker muscular dystrophy who was still ambulant a
