The Association between Birth Satisfaction and the Risk of Postpartum Depression.

Negative experiences with childbirth might have a negative impact on a woman's overall health, including a higher risk of postpartum depression. The aim of the study was to examine the association between birth satisfaction and the risk of postpartum depression (PPD). A 30-item version of the Birth Satisfaction Scale (BSS) and the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) were used, as well as the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS). The study included 584 women (mean age 30.6 ± 4.9), 2 to 4 days postpartum. In the regression model, the negative effect of birth satisfaction on the risk of postpartu

Depressive Symptoms among Pregnant and Postpartum Women in Prison.

INTRODUCTION: Women in prison experience high rates of mental and physical health problems, and pregnant and postpartum women in prison may be particularly vulnerable. Very few studies have examined depressive symptoms among women who are pregnant and give birth in prison. We assessed depressive symptoms longitudinally from pregnancy into the postpartum period in a sample of 58 women who gave birth in prison. We also considered whether incarceration-related factors (length of time incarcerated while pregnant, remaining length of sentence to serve after birth) were associated with depressive sy

Postpartum thyroid measures and depressive symptomology: a pilot study.

CONTEXT: While correlations have been demonstrated between postpartum depression and psychosocial and circumstantial risk factors, some evidence exists for a similar relationship between postpartum depression and thyroid measures. OBJECTIVE: To search at 4 weeks postpartum for correlations of numerical scores on a postnatal depression screening tool and thyroid measures. METHODS: Subjects took the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) prenatally and at 4 weeks postpartum. Participants were also given blood tests for thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), free thyroxine4, thyroid peroxidase

Acculturation and depressive symptoms among pregnant and postpartum Latinas.

OBJECTIVES: Among childbearing Latinas, higher acculturation has been found to be significantly associated with increased risk for mental health problems, although these findings have been inconsistent. The aims of this study are to assess and compare the prevalence of elevated depressive symptoms among pregnant and postpartum U.S.- and Mexican-born Latinas, and to describe the relation of elevated depressive symptoms and acculturation indicators. METHODS: A convenience sample of 439 pregnant and postpartum Latinas attending Public Health Clinics in San Antonio, Texas was screened for depress

Immune, health and endocrine characteristics of depressed postpartum mothers.

The purpose of the study was to examine demographic, immune, endocrine, stress and health characteristics of depressed mothers, measured between 4 and 6 weeks postpartum, and compare them to non-depressed mothers. The top decile (N=25) of Profile of Mood States depression scores was used to categorize mothers as depressed and these data were then compared to means of the remaining mothers (N=175) in a study of stress and immunity during the postpartum. Depressed mothers were younger, had smaller birth weight infants, and their babies experienced more illness symptoms at 4-6 weeks postpartum. D

Effects of gonadal steroids in women with a history of postpartum depression.

OBJECTIVE: Endocrine factors are purported to play a role in the etiology of postpartum depression, but direct evidence for this role is lacking. The authors investigated the possible role of changes in gonadal steroid levels in postpartum depression by simulating two hormonal conditions related to pregnancy and parturition in euthymic women with and without a history of postpartum depression. METHOD: The supraphysiologic gonadal steroid levels of pregnancy and withdrawal from these high levels to a hypogonadal state were simulated by inducing hypogonadism in euthymic women-eight with and eig

Is Postpartum Depression Different From Depression Occurring Outside of the Perinatal Period? A Review of the Evidence.

Whether a major depressive episode occurring in the postpartum period (i.e., postpartum depression [PPD]) is sufficiently distinct from major depressive episodes occurring at other times (i.e., major depressive disorder) to warrant a separate diagnosis is a point of debate with substantial clinical significance. The evidence for and against diagnostic distinction for PPD is reviewed with respect to epidemiology, etiology, and treatment. Overall, evidence that PPD is distinct from major depressive disorder is mixed and is largely affected by how the postpartum period is defined. For depression

Comparative analysis of the performance of the Postpartum Depression Screening Scale with two other depression instruments.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression affects approximately 13% of mothers but up to 50% of all cases of this tragic illness can go undetected. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to compare the performance of a newly created instrument, the Postpartum Depression Screening Scale (PDSS), with the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) and a general depression scale, the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II). METHOD: In this methodological design a total of 150 new mothers completed these three instruments in random order, followed immediately by a DSM-IV diagnostic interview. Using the

Traumatic Birth Perception and Postpartum Depression Among Postpartum Women in Türkiye: The Indirect Association of Perceived Social Support.

Background/Objectives: Traumatic birth perception has been associated with adverse psychological outcomes during the postpartum period, including postpartum depressive symptoms. Perceived social support may be related to both traumatic birth perception and maternal mental health. However, the associations among these variables remain insufficiently understood. This study aimed to examine the relationships among traumatic birth perception, perceived social support, and postpartum depression in postpartum women in Türkiye and to explore the indirect association of perceived social support in thi

Childhood traumatic experiences and postpartum depression: a mixed methods narrative study.

PURPOSE: Postpartum depression (PPD) is a significant public health concern with profound effects on the health and well-being of women, children, and families. A growing body of research has identified an association between childhood traumatic experiences and an increased risk of PPD. This study aims to elucidate potentially underrecognized childhood experiences that are perceived as traumatic or particularly formative, and to examine whether linguistic features in brief trauma narratives are associated with PPD symptomatology. METHODS: This analysis included data from 143 participants who

Historical trauma as a contributor to postpartum depression among Indigenous mothers.

INTRODUCTION: Postpartum depression (PPD) is a significant public health concern. Moreover, research suggests that American Indian/Alaskan Native (AI/AN) mothers experience postpartum depression at higher rates than the general population (Heck, 2021; Ko et al., 2017). As a result, understanding the potential causes of higher PPD among AI/AN mothers is helpful to the development of better interventions to reduce PPD among AI/AN mothers. A potential cause of higher PPD symptoms among AI/AN mothers is historical trauma (HT). HT refers to the cumulative psychological wounding experienced across g

Cardiovascular health and depression among postpartum women in the United States.

BACKGROUND: The postpartum period is a critical time period for both cardiovascular health (CVH) and psychosocial health among women. While depression is a recognized cardiovascular risk factor in non-pregnant populations, the association between depression and CVH in the postpartum period has been understudied. OBJECTIVES: To examine the association between depression and CVH among reproductive-age women and whether postpartum status modifies this association. METHODS: We analyzed cross-sectional data from non-pregnant women aged 20-44 years in the National Health and Nutrition Examination

Zuranolone in Postpartum Depression: Mechanistic Innovation, Clinical Evidence, and Translational Uncertainty.

Postpartum depression is a clinically significant perinatal mental health condition with consequences for maternal functioning, infant care, family dynamics, and healthcare engagement. Although psychotherapy, psychosocial support, and conventional antidepressants remain central to treatment, important therapeutic gaps persist, including the delayed onset of conventional antidepressants, variable or incomplete treatment response, tolerability concerns, and barriers to timely access to specialized perinatal mental healthcare, particularly when rapid symptom improvement is clinically needed. Druggable Targets for Postpartum Depression: A Mendelian Randomization and Colocalization Study.

Postpartum depression (PPD) remains a complex disorder with poorly understood genetic underpinnings. This study systematically evaluated the genetic susceptibility of PPD and identified potential therapeutic targets using Mendelian Randomization (MR) approach. Using a two-sample MR approach, the study assessed the causal effects of expression quantitative trait loci (eQTLs) of druggable genes in blood on PPD, which was sourced from the FinnGen. The primary analytical method was the inverse variance weighted, supplemented by a series sensitivity analyses. Summary-data-based Mendelian Randomizat
