Dermatitis artefacta.

Self-inflicted dermatoses mainly refer to psychiatric disturbances such as psychoses, mental retardation, and personality disorders. Diagnostic clues are found in the nature and the evolution of the lesions as well as in the ambivalent combination of dependency on doctors and hostility toward them revealed in the patient's medical history. Management of dermatitis artefacta patients means dealing with the complex emotional issue of a basic antagonism in the dermatologist-patient relationship. Both the dermatologist and the dermatologic nursing staff should show an understanding and nonaggressi…

Perioral dermatitis.

Forty-three patients with perioral dermatitis are described. In seven patients, this eruption was associated with the use of hydrocortisone butyrate (Locoid) alone, and this topical steroid can no longer be recommended unreservedly for use on the face. In fifteen other patients, medication was undertaken without medical advice. The time may have come to print on tubes of potent local steroids warnings about the hazards of long-term use on the face without medical advice. Drug companies and pharmacists could also help by asking patients to discard any partially-used tubes of ointment and an exp…

Tumbleweed dermatitis.

Russian thistle (Salsola kali), the most common plant referred to as "tumbleweed" in the western United States, can cause a dermatitis in persons who come into direct contract with it. Tests were conducted to determine the mechanism of this dermatitis. Mechanical contact with plant branches, as well as scratch, patch, and photopatch tests with Russian thistle extract and scratch tests with 1.5% potassium nitrate, a plant constituent, were employed. These tests, along with transparent adhesive tape preparations and a skin biopsy, showed that in nonsensitized persons, dermatitis was due only to …

Cheyletiella dermatitis.

A mild dermatitis probably due to Cheyletiella yasguri was observed in 2 persons whose pet dog was infested with this parasite. Cheyletiella mites differ morphologically from sarcoptic mites, which cause canine and human scabies. Treatment of man and dog with 1% gamma benzene hexachloride is usually successful in clearing this condition.

[Perioral dermatitis].

Intensive investigations between 1969-1974 on 245 patients with perioral dermatitis are reported. Results are discussed with special regard to clinical behaviour, histology, differential diagnosis and etiology of the disease. Eczematous sources, bacterial and mycotic infections can be ruled out as etiological factors. Therapeutical considerations are discussed.
