Despite its prevalence, rosacea has not received the same attention of researchers as other dermatologic disorders. Nevertheless, new pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic therapies for the condition continue to be developed. The future of rosacea treatment will probably involve a combination of drugs and devices. Certain core therapies (i.e., topical metronidazole, topical azelaic acid, oral tetracyclines, and topical sulfur/sodium sulfacetamide) are validated by the greatest amount of high-order clinical evidence and will undoubtedly remain first-line therapeutic choices. However, more research

Agricultural work is associated with high rates of injury, disability, and illness. Agricultural workers are at increased risk for a variety of illnesses including respiratory disorders, dermatologic conditions, and cancer. The recognition of ODTS led to increased understanding of acute illness in farmers and grain workers. Previously, many cases of acute illness were probably erroneously called farmer's lung. The same agents that are responsible for ODTS are responsible for the high prevalence of bronchitis in certain agricultural workers. The recent description of the innate immune system is

Over the past several years, the exponential growth in the use of topical and systemic medications and drugs has been accompanied by a concomitant increase in the incidence of adverse reactions associated with them. One type of reaction that has been of particular interest to dermatologists has been the development of immunologic photosensitivity to topically applied and orally administered substances. The majority of agents that have been identified as causing photoallergic reactions in a significant percentage of individuals are no longer utilized. However, because new products are introduce

N-acetylcysteine is a mucolytic drug which is commonly used as an antidote for acetaminophen toxicity. It is a thiol compound, which acts as a donor of cysteine, leading to replenishment of glutathione and thus acts as an antioxidant. It also has anti-inflammatory effects, alters the levels of neurotransmitters, inhibits proliferation of fibroblasts and keratinocytes and causes vasodilatation. Due to these actions, n-acetylcysteine has found use in several dermatologic conditions in systemic and topical form. The drug has been used as an adjuvant in the management of conditions such as toxic e

Current standard of treatment for chronic hepatitis C virus infection requires the use of pegylated interferon plus ribavirin. Treatment with these two agents has been associated with numerous side effects, which frequently include dermatologic eruptions. We report a cutaneous eruption associated with interferon having clinical presentation of erythema annulare centrifugum. The eruption occurred within days of the first interferon injection and repeatedly flared following subsequent injections. Our patient was able to continue therapy without interruption, while managing the reaction with topi

The coagulation system protects the body from uncontrolled blood loss by means of highly regulated processes. In case of an injury the coagulation system instantly switches from controlled blood flow to acute coagulation and thrombus formation with the goal of stopping the blood loss. Minor changes in this well-maintained equilibrium of coagulation and blood flow tip the balance towards uncontrolled blood loss or even fatal thromboembolic events. Iatrogenic manipulation of this highly regulated system is possible with a variety of therapeutic agents. We review the basics of coagulation physiol

Dermatologic diseases encompass a broad category of pathologic situations. Infection remains a significant aspect of the pathology faced in patient encounters, and it is natural to expect that anti-infectives play a major element in the armamentarium utilized by dermatologists. Aside from the treatment of the classic bacterial and fungal infections, there are now new uses for antiviral agents to help suppress recurrent disease, such as herpes simplex. There is also the novel approach of using anti-infectives, or agents that have been thought to have antimicrobial activity, to treat inflammator

The increasingly frequent use of immunomodulatory agents in dermatology requires the observance of specific recommendations for immunization. These recommendations are developed and regularly updated by the German Standing Committee on Vaccination (STIKO), an independent advisory group at the Robert Koch Institute. Dermatological patients on immunosuppressive treatment should ideally receive all vaccinations included in the standard immunization schedule. Additionally, it is recommended that they also undergo vaccination against the seasonal flu, pneumococci, and herpes zoster (inactivated her

Immune checkpoint inhibitors have revolutionized the cancer treatment with an approved efficacy in different solid tumors and hematologic malignancies. These agents are increasing the indication in cancer treatment, but can be associated with serious immune-related adverse effects (IRAEs). Dermatologic and gastrointestinal toxicities are the most common IRAE followed by endocrinopathies with a different time of occurrence. Rarely cases of gastrointestinal toxicities are observed almost 2 years after initiation of the therapy. In this review we focus on liver toxicity related to these immunothe

BACKGROUND: Topical immunomodulators include both immunostimulatory and immunosuppressive agents. If successful, topical immunotherapy may represent an important improvement in the therapy of inflammatory dermatoses, viral infections, and cancers of the skin and genital mucosa. Topical immunotherapy using obligate contact sensitizers such as diphencyprone or dinitrochlorobenzene has been used against viral (e.g., common warts) and autoimmune diseases (e.g., alopecia areata).
RESULTS: Newer agents such imidazoquinolines (imiquimod and resiquimod) act by cytokine secretion from monocytes/macrop

BACKGROUND: Male genital dermatological conditions occupy a distinct clinical space at the intersection of dermatology and andrology. For much of the last century they were managed in isolation, often without accurate diagnosis, with surgery as the default response to anatomical sequelae. Over the past three decades, advances in male genital dermatology have fundamentally changed this landscape, with direct and measurable consequences for urological and andrological practice.
OBJECTIVES: To review the impact of advances in male genital dermatology on the management of male genital lichen scle

BACKGROUND: Sulfur has been historically used in dermatological therapy due to its broad-spectrum antimicrobial and immunomodulatory activities and demonstrates therapeutic efficacy in conditions such as scabies, tinea versicolor, psoriasis, and atopic dermatitis. However, systematic analyses of the therapeutic potential and mechanisms of different forms of sulfur (e.g., sublimed and precipitated sulfur) and bioactive derivatives (e.g., hydrogen sulfide), particularly their effects on cutaneous diseases, remain underrepresented in contemporary literature.
AIM: Our study aimed to provide a com

The author reviews the latest developments regarding the most important immunological methods for the diagnosis of dermatological diseases. The salt-split-skin, fluorescence overlay antigen mapping and immunoblot techniques are useful methods for the differentiation of autoimmune bullous skin diseases. The use of recombinant fusion products of antigenic epitopes in patients with pemphigus and bullous pemphigoid affords a possibility for the differentiation or diagnosis of the disease by means of a simple ELISA technique. In situ hybridization and the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique a

Dermatomyositis is a connective tissue disorder with dermatological and extracutaneous manifestations. Multiple treatment modalities have been used to treat dermatomyositis, and there have been cases with resistant disease refractory to conventional therapies. Corticosteroids are usually used to achieve remission, and from then, steroid-sparing agents such as azathioprine are used to maintain remission. However, in this report, we present a case of dermatomyositis with refractory cutaneous manifestation. The patient's muscular pain had subsided with the use of corticosteroids, but the dermatol

BACKGROUND: Polyethylene glycol (PEG) is commonly used in dermatology due to its excellent solubility, nontoxic nature, and compatibility with various therapeutic agents. Its applications extend from moisturizing creams to chemical peels, improving skin hydration and facilitating drug delivery. Despite its broad utility, PEG is associated with hypersensitivity reactions, including rare cases of anaphylaxis, that necessitates a thorough assessment of its safety profile. This review evaluates PEG's therapeutic roles, safety, and dermatological applications, focusing on its pharmacokinetics, chem

BACKGROUND: Combination antifungal/corticosteroid preparations are widely used by nondermatologists in the treatment of superficial fungal infections in patients of all ages. Over half of the prescriptions written for the most commonly used combination agent clotrimazole 1%/betamethasone diproprionate 0.05% cream (Lotrisone, Schering, Kenilworth, NJ) were prescribed for children younger than 4 years old. Our pediatric dermatology division has recently encountered a series of children with recurrent or persistent tinea corporis, especially tinea faciei, treated initially with combination antifu
