Shwachman-Diamond syndrome (SDS) is an autosomal-recessive disorder characterized by exocrine pancreatic insufficiency and bone marrow failure. Mutations in the SBDS gene are identified in most patients with SDS. Recent studies have shown that SBDS is involved in ribosome biogenesis and is localized to the nucleolus. METHODS: Review of clinical findings in a 54-year-old women with ocular history of a scleral buckling procedure for a retinal detachment from blunt trauma and phacoemulsification with intraocular lens placement. Cystic fibrosis (CF) and Shwachman-Diamond Syndrome (SDS) share overlapping features, including recurrent respiratory infections and pancreatic insufficiency, which can complicate diagnosis.
