BACKGROUND: Diaper dermatitis is a skin problem that has decreased with the development of new technologies in disposable diapers that prevent excessive moisture in the perianal region. Preventive interventions in the diapered area are important given repetitive, episodic exposures to irritants in urine and feces. This report deals with a 5-month-old infant who at the age of 2 months was treated with topical fluorinated steroids for dermatitis in the diaper area. The treatment was continued for about 2 months. Some weeks later, multiple oval and round dark brown nodules developed in the inguinogenital areas. Histologic examination of these lesions revealed intense granulomatous infiltration in the upper dermis that consisted of lymphocytes, neutrophilic and eosinophilic granulocytes, and histiocytes. After steroid therapy was discontinued, the nodules slowly disappeared.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the present study was to compare alcohol versus natural drying for umbilical cord care in preterm infants and to examine its effects on bacterial colonization and cord detachment.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Eligible infants <34 weeks gestation admitted to the NICU were randomized to receive either umbilical cleansing with 70% isopropyl alcohol at each diaper change or natural drying. Umbilical stump cultures were performed at 12 to 24 hours, 72 hours, 7 days, and 14 days of age.

BACKGROUND: Granuloma gluteale infantum is a skin disorder of controversial etiology manifested clinically by oval reddish-purple granulomatous nodules on the gluteal surfaces and groin areas of infants.
