The activities of jejunal mucosal peptide hydrolases for glycylglycine, glycyl-L-leucine and L-leucylglycine, were assayed in 37 patients. The prevalence of lactase deficiency in British adults is unknown. Examination of the distribution of lactase activities in single and multiple biopsies of jejunum indicated that 0.8 U/g wet weight was a suitable cut-off point to separate lactase deficient patients from others. Carnosinase, the dipeptidase which hydrolyses carnosine and other histidine-containing dipeptides, was assayed in mucosal tissues of the human and of the rat gut. Kinetic properties of the intestinal enzyme were found to be similar to carnosinase of other animal tissues. A retrospective analysis was made of jejunal biopsies performed on 62 patients with Crohn's disease for disaccharidase levels and routine histology. Thirteen patients with irritable bowel syndrome acted as a control group. Two patients with Crohn's disease had hypolactasia. Nine children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in remission were studied at the end of their three years' maintenance therapy.
