The lack of published data on effective disinfectants and contact times for use on the fungal pathogens Coccidioides immitis and C. posadasii prompted the authors to investigate the fungicidal activity of three commonly used laboratory disinfectants on arthroconidia harvested from C. immitis strain 2009. They tested the ability of 10% bleach, 70% ethanol, and Vesphene® IIse to inactivate 107 arthroconidia in an aqueous suspension within 1, 2, 5, 10, or 20 minutes of contact time. The bactericidal and growth inhibiting effects of disinfectants on Streptococcus and Candida strains were tested in vitro. Chlorhexidine, when used in tiny concentrations (0.0001-0.0039%) inhibits the growth of Streptococci. With Wofasteril 0.32%) all Streptococci and Candida were killed within a minute. Next to a good bacteria inhibitor (0.001-0.032%), a sufficient bactericidal effect on Streptococci is shown by hydrogen peroxide when used in a 4% concentration and warmed to 45 degrees Centigrade (degrees C).

The activity of disinfectants with regard to spores of Bacillus anthracis was determined in a suspension test. Creoline (10%) and also several other disinfectants for veterinary use showed no activity against spores of B. anthracis. Natriumdichloorisocyanuraat-dihydrate (2400 ppm active chlorine) and peracetic acid 0,25% demonstrated after 30 minutes of exposures at 20 degrees C in the presence of 4% horse serum a significant sporicidal effect. Under the same conditions formaldehyde 4% and glutaraldehyde 2% were also found to be sporicidal but only after 2 hours of exposure.

Porphyria cutanea tarda was detected in a 44-year-old janitress. The illness was probably caused by the unintentional synthesis of a polychlorinated phenol as a result of mixing commonly available household ingredients in toilet bowls and shower stalls. Although the evidence for this hypothesis is circumstantial, its likelihood and the wide-spread household use of these reagents justify calling attention to the innovative misuse of disinfectants as a potential source of toxic exposure.
