Dominance rank, facial morphology and testes size in male white-faced capuchins: evidence for pre- and post-mating competition.

Male reproductive success is determined by the interplay of female mate choice and male-male competition, often linked to dominance rank in social animals. Across taxa, elaborate ornaments, such as bright coloration or large antlers, often function as badges of status, signalling male competitive ability to rivals. In species where females mate with multiple males, post-mating sperm competition also plays an important role in male reproductive success and is associated with larger relative testes size. We investigate the relationship between morphological features and dominance rank in wild ma

Inventing a Gay Race: Racial Desire and Queer Colonialism in Hollinghurst's Fiction.

This article offers a sociologically informed analysis of queer racial and spatial politics in Alan Hollinghurst's fiction. Through a close textual analysis of The Swimming-Pool Library, The Line of Beauty, The Folding Star and The Spell, the study reveals how queer spaces, while supposed to be inclusive, indeed reproduce colonial and orientalist exclusive discourses. Nonwhite gay men are represented as feminized, hypersexualised, and subordinate to their white British counterparts, echoing the master-slave dynamic of colonial narratives. Drawing on the works of such theorists as Mercer, Crens

Group living facilitates the evolution of duets in barbets.

The duets of birds have intrigued biologists for a long time, yet much remains unknown about the evolution of these striking collective displays. This is partly because previous studies on duet evolution have been biased to songbirds and neglected other bird groups. In songbirds, the absence of migration has been found to predict the occurrence of duetting, indirectlysupporting the idea that duet communication is linked with pair bonding. Here, we used phylogenetic comparative analyses in a sedentary clade of non-songbirds, the barbets (Capitonidae), to reveal new correlates of duet evolution.

Attempts to determine the status of electroshock-induced attack in male laboratory mice.

An attempt was made using a combination of simple experimental manipulations and videotape recorder (VTR) analysis of bite targets employed to determine whether electroshock-induced attack on anosmic opponents in laboratory mice was an offensive or a defensive behaviour. VTR analysis suggested that ventral surface biting was more evident in this form of attack than in social conflict. Individually- and group-housed males showed similar levels of fighting on exposure to electroshock, but dominant males from pairs showed greater attack than their subordinate partners. Zinc sulphate-induced anosm

Controlling behavior, power relations within intimate relationships and intimate partner physical and sexual violence against women in Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Controlling behavior is more common and can be equally or more threatening than physical or sexual violence. This study sought to determine the role of husband/partner controlling behavior and power relations within intimate relationships in the lifetime risk of physical and sexual violence in Nigeria. METHODS: This study used secondary data from a cross-sectional nationally-representative survey collected by face-to-face interviews from women aged 15 - 49 years in the 2008 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey. Utilizing a stratified two-stage cluster sample design, data was coll

Behavioural reactivity of the Korean native Jindo dog varies with coat colour.

This study aimed to compare the behavioural reactivity of Jindo dogs with two different coat colours. Fawn (16 males, 15 females; mean age+/-S.D.=7.2+/-2.1 years) and white (10 males, 10 females; mean age+/-S.D.=6.9+/-2.1 years) Jindo dogs were exposed to a set of behavioural tests. All of the dogs were videotaped during the testing period to allow further analysis. The intensity of social, aggressive, fearful, and submissive reactivity and the frequency of urination as a scent-marking behaviour were scored on a scale running from 0 to 4 points. For each dog, each variable was defined as the a

The effects of peer victimization and physical aggression on changes in internalizing from first to third grade.

Three models of the prospective relations between child maladjustment and peer victimization are examined: (a) internalizing results directly from victimization, (b) internalizing leads to victimization, and (c) physical aggression fuels retaliatory victimization that leads to increases in internalizing over time. Data came from assessments of children at the beginning of Grade 1 (n = 432; average age = 6.3 years), with follow-ups at the end of Grades 1, 2, and 3. Most children showed low stable internalizing trajectories (73%); however, high stable and increasing curvilinear trajectories were

Wife beating in South Africa: an imbalance theory of resources and power.

This article develops an imbalance theory to explain physical violence against women in intimate relationships in South Africa. The theory proposes four typologies: dependence, compensation, submission, and transgression, through which imbalances in resource contribution and power distribution between spouses are hypothesized to contribute to violence. The dependence hypothesis suggests that economic dependence of the wife will lead to more violence. The compensation hypothesis argues that the husband will use force to compensate for his inability to live up to the male-provider norm. The subm

Russian perspectives on elder abuse: an exploratory study.

The purpose of this exploratory study was to analyze Russian perceptions of elder abuse as reflected in their examples of abusive behavior from an adult child to an aging parent. Also of interest was the possibility of gender differences in the Russian perspectives on elder abuse. The convenience sample consisted of 21 Russian participants (10 males, 10 females, and one without gender identified), who provided examples of extreme, moderate, and mild abuse from an adult child towards an aging parent. Most examples of extreme abuse were forms of physical violence. Typical examples of moderate ab

Perspectives on elder abuse in Greece.

The sample for this exploratory qualitative study of Greek perceptions of elder abuse consisted of 43 Greek participants from urban centers and 28 Greeks from a small island village. Participants were asked to provide examples of extreme, moderate, and mild abuse from an adult child toward his/her aging parent. Half of the examples of extreme abuse were various forms of physical aggression. Predominant examples of moderate abuse were psychological abuse and neglect, and at the mild level neglect was the most highly cited category. The most frequently mentioned specific types of elder mistreatm

[Inferiority in normal and anxious populations].

BACKGROUND: The construct of inferiority can be defined as an intimate, unrealistic and persistent conviction to be always low-ranking in merit, value, intellectual and/or physical capacities (Weiner et Mohl, 1996; Yao et al., 1996). This can be considered as an important cognitive factor in anxiety disorders. But, does a feeling of inferiority also exist in normal subjects? We hypothesized that the feeling of inferiority might be a normal phenomenon if it is a transient experience, in relation to external events, and represents an aspect of self esteem. The Inferiority Scale (Yao et al., 1998

Fatal neglect of the elderly.

Maltreatment of the elderly is a common problem that affects more than 3% of the elderly. We report on two cases of fatal neglect. Risk factors of victims and caregivers were analysed in the context of the social history. In both cases, the victims had a dominant personality and the abusers (the sons) had been strictly controlled and formed by the parent. The victims showed typical risk factors such as living together with the abuser, isolation, dependence on care, income and money administration. Initially, the victims declined help from outside and self-neglect occurred. The unemployed perpe

Social-cognitive and behavioral correlates of aggression and victimization in boys' play groups.

A contrived play group procedure was utilized to examine the behavioral and social-cognitive correlates of reactive aggression, proactive aggression, and victimization via peers. Eleven play groups, each of which consisted of six familiar African-American 8-year-old boys, met for 45-min sessions on five consecutive days. Social-cognitive interviews were conducted following the second and fourth sessions. Play group interactions were videotaped and examined by trained observers. High rates of proactive aggression were associated with positive outcome expectancies for aggression/assertion, frequ

Primate displacement activities as an ethopharmacological model of anxiety.

Using a within-subject cross-over, vehicle-controlled design, we investigated the acute effects of benzodiazepine receptor ligands with different mechanisms of action on the displacement activities (scratching, self-grooming, and body shake) of seven male macaques living in social groups. Our aim was to test the discriminative validity of displacement activities as an ethopharmacological model of anxiety. Subjects were given i.m. lorazepam (0.10, 0.20, 0.25 mg/ kg) and FG 7142 (0.1, 0.3, 1.0 mg/kg). The frequency of displacement activities was decreased by the anxiolytic lorazepam and increase

Hostile personality and risks of peripheral arterial disease in the general population.

The relationships between personality and risks of coronary heart disease have been studied widely, but little attention has been paid to other forms of atherosclerotic disease. The objective of this study was to determine relationships in the general population between hostile personality and Type A behavior pattern with asymptomatic and symptomatic chronic peripheral arterial disease. The Edinburgh Artery Study comprises a cross-sectional random sample survey of 1592 men and women aged 55 to 74 years sampled from age-sex registers of 10 general practices throughout the city. Psychotherapy with phobic patients: the marriage relationship as the source of symptoms and focus of treatment.

Four patients demonstrating phobic symptoms occurring in the context of maladaptive marriages are presented. Thorough historical data collection is stressed. Similarities in family backgrounds and personality styles emerge in these cases and are discussed in relation to genesis of symptoms within the marital relationships. A psychotherapeutic approach is described and results of treatment examined.

Mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR) implicated in plasticity of the reproductive axis during social status transitions.

The highly conserved brain-pituitary-gonadal (BPG) axis controls reproduction in all vertebrates, so analyzing the regulation of this signaling cascade is important for understanding reproductive competence. The protein kinase mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR) functions as a conserved regulator of cellular growth and metabolism in all eukaryotes, and also regulates the reproductive axis in mammals. However, whether mTOR might also regulate the BPG axis in non-mammalian vertebrates remains unexplored. We used complementary experimental approaches in an African cichlid fish, Astatotilapia b

Strategic Inversion: How Refugees Reconfigure Everyday Resistance under Benevolent Oppression.

What does everyday resistance look like among dominated populations experiencing paternalistic care rather than extraction? Research on everyday resistance emerged from contexts where power extracts surplus from the oppressed. In this scholarship, the backstage is a space where the dominated cultivate hidden transcripts to cope with oppression, while the frontstage, where performances are enacted to those in power, is primary. Inversions of this order, when they occur, are momentary. Using ethnographic fieldwork in two Tanzanian refugee camps, we show that under benevolent oppression-control j

Intentional injury reported by young people in the Federated States of Micronesia, Kingdom of Tonga and Vanuatu.

BACKGROUND: Intentional injury presents a threat to the physical and psychological well being of young people, especially in developing countries, which carry the greatest part of the global injury burden. While the importance of this problem is recognized, there are limited population data in low and middle income countries that can guide public health action. The present study investigates the prevalence and distribution of intentional injury among young people in three Pacific Island societies, and examines behavioural and psychosocial factors related to risk of intentional injury. English perceptions of elder abuse.

The purpose of this exploratory study was to investigate an English sample's perceptions on elder abuse, inflicted by adult children against their aging parents. Fifty participants (14 males, 46 females) provided examples of extreme, moderate, and mild elder abuse. As examples of extreme abuse, most participants mentioned neglect and physical aggression. Various forms of neglect and psychological abuse were their most common examples of moderate and mild abuse. References to physical aggression appeared most often as examples of extreme abuse rather than of moderate or mild abuse. Within these
