Good drug prescription and distribution practices are pre-requisites for rational use of essential generic medications. However few studies have been conducted on this topic in sub-Saharan Africa especially in rural areas. The purpose of this study in the Mambéré-Kadei health district of the Central African Republic was to evaluate drug use patterns with special attention to prescribing and dispensing, as a basis for assisting policy makers in planning and identifying intervention strategies. The transverse descriptive survey was undertaken in 14 public health facilities in the Mambéré-Kadéï h

The REMEDIAR Program, established during Argentina's 2001-2002 crisis, provides free essential medicines to the uninsured population through direct delivery to more than 8,000 primary healthcare centers. Over two decades, the program has alternated between two financing models: international concessional loans from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and national treasury funding. Using the Nexus Working Group framework linking public financial management to supply chain performance, this longitudinal single-case study (2002-2024) examines how each financing model shaped the program's fu

Universal Health Coverage (UHC) is the cornerstone of global health policy. Sustainable Development Goal 3.8 ensures access to safe, effective, quality and affordable medicines and vaccines. Sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries continue to face persistent challenges in achieving and maintaining essential medicines supply. National Medicines Policies (NMPs) that strengthen access to essential medicines are critical for UHC. In this scoping review, we take stock of the literature on essential medicines supply chains in SSA and analyze the unique, related provisions in the Kenyan and Ugandan NMPs,

INTRODUCTION: Opioids are deemed essential medicines by the World Health Organization (WHO). However, many countries have inadequate access to them. Whether including opioids in national essential medicines lists (EMLs) influences national opioid consumption has not been evaluated.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study to determine whether the listing of opioids in national EMLs was associated with consumption. We quantified the numbers and types of all opioids included in 137 national EMLs, for comparison with opioids in the WHO's Model List of Essential Medicines. Using the Internat

Antidotes and certain other drugs are essential for treating some types of poisoning. Failures in their supply can jeopardize the population's health and safety. The current study aimed to assess the availability of antidotes and other drugs used in the treatment of poisonings in Brazil. International guidelines were used as the basis for selecting 41 antidotes for analysis, none of which currently protected by patents. Of these, 27 are registered in Brazil, but 11 of these are available in inadequate forms for treating poisoning, leaving 16 commercially available antidotes. Only one-third of

Lipid peroxidation increases during ageing and has been implicated in the pathogenesis of degenerative processes associated with ageing. Despite the importance of the enzyme glutathione-S-transferase (GST) in the biotransformation and detoxification of lipid peroxidation products, there have been extremely limited studies of GST in the ageing brain. The drug chlorpromazine is known to have an activating influence on the activities of certain antioxidant enzymes (glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, etc.) and it also has anti-lipid peroxidative and anti-lipofuscin influences. Therefore

Millions of people cannot access essential medicines they need for deadly diseases like malaria, tuberculosis (TB) and HIV/AIDS. There is good information on the need for drugs for these diseases but until now, no global estimate of the impact drugs are having on this burden. This paper presents a model measuring companies' key malaria, TB and HIV/AIDS drugs' consequences for global health (global-health-impact.org). It aggregates drugs' impacts in several ways-by disease, country and originator-company. The methodology can be extended across diseases as well as drugs to provide a more extensi

Pharmaceutical policy in Mali is based on the concept of essential medicines and procurement of generic medicines. Unfortunately, increasing availability of generic medicines via different promotional programs can often be accompanied by their irrational use. This survey was thus designed to evaluate rational prescribing and dispensing of medicines in Mali. A cross-sectional survey was conducted from 1998 to 2005 in 30 primary health centers and 30 private dispensaries; in Bamako and in 6 of the 8 other regions of the country. In each of the visited facilities, 20 prescriptions dispensed at th

When a patient presents with a neurological or neuromuscular disorder, it is essential to consider drugs as a possible cause. Drugs can affect virtually any part of the neuraxis and the resulting disorders can usually be classified in terms of the anatomical site affected and the clinical presentation. In general, the signs and symptoms of drug-induced neurological disorders are virtually indistinguishable from those seen in naturally occurring disease but are usually reversible if diagnosed early enough. Cortical depression may produce coma, particularly in overdose cases, but a large number

Much clinical evidence supports the use of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACE-I) as the first-step drugs in the treatment of essential hypertension. The acute and chronic effects of ACE-I on renal function are reviewed in this paper. The kidney is an important target organ of essential hypertension and some antihypertensive drugs have been shown to decrease renal haemodynamic parameters. In hypertensives with normal renal function, ACE-I were demonstrated to be safe drugs: after acute and chronic administration of these drugs, the drop in blood pressure was accompanied by unchanged

The emergence of novel pathogenic strains with increased antibacterial resistance patterns poses a significant threat to the management of infectious diseases. In this study, we aimed at utilizing the subtractive genomic approach to identify novel drug targets against Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Poona strain ATCC BAA-1673. We employed in silico bioinformatics tools to subtract the strain-specific paralogous and host-specific homologous sequences from the bacterial proteome. The sorted proteome was further refined to identify the essential genes in the pathogenic bacterium using

Essential facts Controlled drugs are defined and governed by the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 and associated regulations. Examples of controlled drugs include morphine, pethidine and methadone. Since 2012, appropriately qualified nurses and midwives can prescribe controlled drugs for medical conditions within their competence. There are some exceptions when treating addiction.

Contemporary data on the availability, cost and affordability of essential medicines for chronic respiratory diseases (CRDs) across low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) are missing, despite most people with CRDs living in LMICs. Cross-sectional data for seven CRD medicines in pharmacies, healthcare facilities and central medicine stores were collected from 60 LMICs in 2022-2023. Medicines for symptomatic relief were widely available and affordable, while preventative treatments varied widely in cost, were less available and largely unaffordable. There is an urgent need to address the

BACKGROUND: Each year, millions of newborns die as a result of birth asphyxia, infections, and complications of preterm birth. This burden of death is disproportionately concentrated in low-income countries including Ethiopia. As a result, the care given immediately after birth is crucial for making a successful transition from intrauterine to extrauterine function and to reduce neonatal mortality.
METHODS: Facility-based cross-sectional study design was carried out on a sample size of 208 obstetrical care providers. A simple random sampling technique was used to select the study subjects. Th
