[Ear tumors: Surgical aspects].

BACKGROUND: The ear and the petrous pyramid extend from the external auricle to the center of the cranial cavity, featuring a complex anatomy and significant neurovascular relationships. The ear houses essential structures involved in hearing, balance, and facial mobility. Due to its rich histological composition, the ear can be affected by a wide range of tumors, from benign lesions to aggressive cancers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This narrative literature review provides an overview of the specific anatomy of the ear and the petrous portion of the temporal bone, followed by a description of th…

[Neuroendocrine adenoma middle ear].

Neuroendocrine adenoma (NEA) is an extremely rare pathology and accounts for less than 2% of all ear tumors. The article provides an overview of the diagnosis, classification, treatment methods and algorithm for monitoring patients with NEA of the middle ear. 6 cases of NEA of the tympanic cavity are described in detail, which were diagnosed and treated in GBUZ NIKIO named after N.N. L.I. Sverzhevsky DZM for the last 5 years. Diagnosis of NEA of the middle ear is possible when performing high-resolution multislice computed tomography of the temporal bones and magnetic resonance imaging with co…

Management of Ear Trauma.

Facial trauma remains a common reason for visits to the emergency department or urgent care facility. The ear remains susceptible to trauma given its delicate anatomy and position in the maxillofacial region. Understanding the anatomy and recognizing the circumstances regarding the mechanism of injury help dictate treatment. The goals of treatment should remain to restore the physiologic form and function of the ear. Middle ear injuries should also be addressed during the process. Although primary repair remains feasible in most cases, there are instances when delayed and staged reconstruction…

[Inner Ear Hearing Loss].

Hearing loss is one of the most dominant handicaps in modern societies, which additionally very often is not realized or not admitted. About one quarter of the general population suffers from inner ear hearing loss and is therefore restricted in communicational skills. Demographic factors like increasing age play an important role as well as environmental influences and an increasing sound and noise exposure especially in leisure activities. Thus borders between a "classical" presbyacusis - if it ever existed - and envirionmentally induced hearing loss disappear. Today restrictions in hearing …

Defining the protruding ear.

OBJECTIVE: Although protruding ears are one of the most frequently occurring congenital deformities in the craniofacial area, there is no clear consensus in literature as to the definition. Our aim was to provide a clear delineation for the definition of prominent ears, deduced from the anthropometry of normal (nonprotruding) ears. METHODS: We performed a prospective cohort study to assess the anatomy of the normal auricle in children using computer-assisted anthropometry in photographs of 102 children aged 5 to 18 years. We compared the anatomy to retrospectively assess photographs of 44 pat…

The crumpled-ear deformity.

The common characteristics of the crumpled-ear deformity, the steps for surgical correction, and the authors' experience are described in this article. Commonly, the ear has a folded-over appearance; a normal length and width when unfurled; and wrinkling of the skin and cartilage of the helical rim, scapha, antihelix, and concha. Principles of correction of this deformity include (1) superficial scoring of the concave segments of the cartilage to open the wrinkled segments, (2) creating the antihelical fold by a mattress-suture technique, (3) repositioning of the helical rim, and (4) repositio…

Autoimmune inner ear disease.

The known etiologies of acquired sensorineural hearing loss include acoustic trauma, physical trauma, ototoxicity, genetic predisposition, infections, Meniere's disease, aging, and autoimmune disease. Treatments are directed at eliminating or managing the underlying disease process and aiding hearing with amplification. Rarely is it possible to improve unaided hearing after sensorineural loss except when the severe to profound level of loss is reached and cochlear implantation becomes an option. Autoimmune inner ear disease, however, is a treatable cause of sensorineural hearing loss and it is…

This article documents the existence of three structures that traverse through the petrotympanic fissure. These structures are the mandibula … blood to the area of the tympanic membrane. Clinical experience with implants that impinge or cover ear problems and other symptoms. Removal of these implants and placements with devices that do not cover these structures often relieve these symptoms.

Complications of ear disease.

Forty-seven patients with acute mastoiditis were treated in our hospital over a 2 and a half year period. Seven patients were symptomatic for a short period only. The other 40 gave a history of chronic ear disease, 22 of them with cholesteatoma. Post auricular swelling is an important sign of acute mastoiditis but was found in only 64% of the patients. Forty-five percent of our patients were found to have infection spread beyond the mastoid. Meningitis was the most common complication (13 patients). Most of the patients who presented without post auricular swelling were diagnosed as a result o…
