Sociocultural and Academic Considerations for School-Age d/Deaf and Hard of Hearing Multilingual Learners: A Case Study of a Deaf Latina.

For decades , research has focused on American Sign Language/English bilingual education for d/Deaf and hard of hearing students whose families used English or ASL. However, a growing population of d/Dhh children come from households where languages other than English (e.g., Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese) are used. In a longitudinal case study, the authors document the K-12 educational pathway of a deaf Latina student. Anecdotal records, semistructured interviews, assessment data, and document reviews of the participant's school and clinical records are used to develop the case study. The findi

Effectiveness of the Whole Inclusive School Empowerment (WISE) project in supporting preschool children with diverse learning needs.

AIM: The aim of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the Whole Inclusive School Empowerment (WISE) project in supporting preschool children with diverse learning needs. METHOD: This study adopted a mixed method design. The quantitative section was a quasi-experiment comprising eight intervention preschools (378 students, 68 teachers) with a support team of an educational psychologist and a teacher coordinator, compared with eight control preschools (281 students, 61 teachers) without the support team. Teachers completed questionnaires on students' school readiness and behavior as we

Promoting early literacy in pediatric practice: twenty years of reach out and read.

Reach Out and Read (ROR) is the first pediatric, evidence-based strategy to prevent problems of early childhood development and learning. With a start in a single clinic in Boston City Hospital in 1989, doctors working in >4000 clinics and practices gave approximately 5.7 million new books to >3.5 million children in all 50 states in 2008. ROR also has become a model for a different way of thinking about parent education during primary care encounters, based less on telling and more on creating real-time learning experiences. ROR flourished because of (1) the growth of pediatric interest in ch

Family perceptions of prematurity, neurodevelopment, and early intervention: a qualitative study.

INTRODUCTION: Given that family involvement is essential for both short- and long-term care of premature infants, it is critical to understand the family's perceptions on prematurity, neurodevelopment, and the need for early intervention. OBJECTIVE: To explore family perceptions on prematurity, neurodevelopment, and early intervention. METHODOLOGY: This exploratory, descriptive, and qualitative study involved two focus groups and ten semi-structured interviews with family members of premature infants across three neonatal care settings: the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Kangaroo Care

Integrating maternal psychosocial well-being into a child-development intervention: the five-pillars approach.

Maternal psychosocial well-being (MPW) is a wide-ranging concept that encompasses the psychological (e.g., mental health, distress, anxiety, depression, coping, problem solving) and social (e.g., family and community support, empowerment, culture) aspects of motherhood. Evidence-based MPW interventions that can be integrated into large-scale maternal and child health programs have not been developed. Building on several years of research in Pakistan, we developed and integrated a cognitive behavioral therapy-based MPW intervention (the five-pillars approach) into a child nutrition and developm

Predictors of Parent Engagement in Part C Early Intervention for Autism: The Role of Single Parenthood and Initial Motivation.

Parent engagement in early intervention supports child progress but is variable in community settings and understudied in autism populations. Prior studies have examined attendance and homework completion rather than parent participation engagement-active, independent, and responsive contribution to treatment-and it is unclear how these distinct engagement measures are related. This study examined how observationally-coded parent participation engagement during early intervention sessions, between-session practice, and attendance were interrelated in addition to the influence of sociodemograph

Deimplementation of inappropriate feeding practices in early care and education: a Hybrid Type 3 cluster-randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: The science of deimplementation-reducing harmful or ineffective practices-has focused almost exclusively on clinical prescribing, with no studies conducted in community or educational settings. Early care and education (ECE) settings offer a strategic venue for shaping eating behaviors, with children consuming up to 500 meals annually in these environments. However, ECE educators routinely use feeding practices that undermine self-regulation, including pressuring children to eat, rushing mealtimes, and offering food as reward. These practices contribute to food aversions, diminishe

Evidence-Based Interventions for Young Dual Language Learners With or at Risk of Language Impairment: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Early intervention professionals, including speech-language pathologists, teachers, and policymakers, face significant challenges in understanding and supporting young dual language learners who have or are at risk of language impairment. The existing research evidence base is fragmented and relatively sparse, and the overall extent and depth of interventions available for different language pairings (the home language and English) remains largely unknown. PURPOSE: This scoping review maps language interventions for dual language learners aged 3 to 9 years with, or at risk of, lan

Early childhood development strategy for the world's children with disabilities.

Early childhood is foundational for optimal and inclusive lifelong learning, health and well-being. Young children with disabilities face substantial risks of sub-optimal early childhood development (ECD), requiring targeted support to ensure equitable access to lifelong learning opportunities, especially in low- and middle-income countries. Although the Sustainable Development Goals, 2015-2030 (SDGs) emphasise inclusive education for children under 5 years with disabilities, there is no global strategy for achieving this goal since the launch of the SDGs. This paper explores a global ECD fram

The cost of not investing in the next 1000 days: implications for policy and practice.

Building on the evidence from the first paper in this Series highlighting the fundamental importance of healthy and nurturing environments for children's growth and development in the next 1000 days (ages 2-5 years), this paper summarises the benefits and costs of key strategies to support children's development in this age range. The next 1000 days build on the family-based and health-sector based interventions provided in the first 1000 days and require broader multisectoral programming. Interventions that have been shown to be particularly effective in this age range are the provision of ea

Vocabulary Outcomes for 5-Year-Old Children Who Are Deaf or Hard of Hearing: Impact of Age at Enrollment in Specialized Early Intervention.

The aims of this study were to examine vocabulary scores of 5-year-old children who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH), as well as the impact of early enrollment in specialized intervention on vocabulary outcomes. Receptive and expressive vocabulary scores were analyzed for 342 five-year-old children who are DHH enrolled in specialized listening and spoken language intervention programs. Regression analyses were utilized to examine the effects of age at enrollment on vocabulary outcomes. Overall, participants achieved scores within normal test limits on receptive and expressive measures of voca

Evaluation of the Developmental Assessment for Intervention Manual (DAIM) for developmental screening in high-risk infants at 12 months of corrected age.

Early detection of developmental delay provides opportunities for early intervention. The Developmental Assessment for Intervention Manual (DAIM) is the simplified screening tool for detection of developmental delay in Thai young infants implemented country-wide by the Ministry of Public Health since 2015. Unlike standard assessment tool, DAIM can be obtained by lay staff or parents and takes less time. We aimed to evaluate the accuracy of the DAIM for detection of developmental delay among high-risk infants. This single center prospective study was conducted from May, 2017 to December, 2021.

COpenhagen Neuroplastic TRaining Against Contractures in Toddlers (CONTRACT): protocol of an open-label randomised clinical trial with blinded assessment for prevention of contractures in infants with high risk of cerebral palsy.

INTRODUCTION: Contractures are frequent causes of reduced mobility in children with cerebral palsy (CP) already at the age of 2-3 years. Reduced muscle use and muscle growth have been suggested as key factors in the development of contractures, suggesting that effective early prevention may have to involve stimuli that can facilitate muscle growth before the age of 1 year. The present study protocol was developed to assess the effectiveness of an early multicomponent intervention, CONTRACT, involving family-oriented and supervised home-based training, diet and electrical muscle stimulation dir

"All of a sudden we noticed a difference at home too": parents' perception of a parent-focused early communication and AAC intervention for toddlers.

Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) can enhance children's communication and is recommended to be introduced as soon as problems are identified. The aim of this interview study was to investigate how parents perceive the ComAlong Toddler intervention offered to parents of children with communication difficulties early in the diagnostic process. ComAlong Toddler consists of a 5-session, group-based, parental course, and two home visits that focus on responsive communication, enhanced milieu teaching, and multimodal AAC. Interviews were conducted 1 year after the intervention with 1

Targeting Youth to Prevent Later Substance Use Disorder: An Underutilized Response to the US Opioid Crisis.

The evolving US opioid crisis is complex and requires myriad different interventions. These include reducing opioid overprescribing and curtailing the supply of illicit opioids, overdose rescue interventions, and treatment and recovery support services for those with opioid use disorders. To date, more distal primary prevention strategies that have an evidence base are underutilized. Yet, the impact of early environments on later substance use disorder risk is increasingly well understood, including knowledge of the mechanistic linkages between brain development and subsequent risk behaviors.

Development of an internet version of the Lidcombe Program of early stuttering intervention: A trial of Part 1.

PURPOSE: There is evidence that access to treatment for early stuttering is not available for all who need it. An internet version of the Lidcombe Program for early stuttering (Internet-LP) has been developed to deal with this shortfall. The LP is suitable for such development because it is delivered by parents in the child's everyday environment, with training by a speech-language pathologist. A Phase I trial of Internet-LP Part 1, comprising parent training, is reported here. METHOD: Eight parents of pre-schoolers who stutter were recruited and six completed the trial. RESULT: Post-trial a

Increased Resting-State Functional Connectivity in the Cingulo-Opercular Cognitive-Control Network after Intervention in Children with Reading Difficulties.

Dyslexia, or reading difficulty, is characterized by slow, inaccurate reading accompanied by executive dysfunction. Reading training using the Reading Acceleration Program improves reading and executive functions in both children with dyslexia and typical readers. This improvement is associated with increased activation in and functional connectivity between the anterior cingulate cortex, part of the cingulo-opercular cognitive-control network, and the fusiform gyrus during a reading task after training. The objective of the current study was to determine whether the training also has an effec

Early reading and spelling abilities in children with severe speech and physical impairment: a cross-linguistic comparison.

Early reading and spelling abilities in children from Ireland and Sweden with severe speech and physical impairment (SSPI) were studied and compared. The aim was to look for similarities as well as for differences that could be related to the different linguistic environments. Both group consisted of 15 children, and were matched on linguistic age. Reading and spelling as well as phonological awareness and memory were tested. Both groups performed fairly well on the phonological awareness tasks, but the Swedish children did not seem to manage to use this ability successfully for reading and sp

Early intervention and brain plasticity in autism.

Autism is associated with impairments in brain systems that come on line very early in life. One such system supports the development of face processing. Dawson and colleagues found that 3 year old children with autism failed to show differential event-related potentials (ERPs) to photographs of their mother's versus a stranger's face. Since differential ERP activity to familiar and unfamiliar faces is typically present by 6 months, this represents early brain dysfunction. McPartland and colleagues found that the face-specific ERP component ('N170') is atypical in older individuals with autism

Vaccination coverage among children enrolled in Head Start programs and licensed child care centers and entering school--United States and selected reporting areas, 1999-2000 school year.

Undervaccinated children enrolled in child care centers and schools are vulnerable to outbreaks of vaccine-preventable disease. One of the national health objectives for 2010 is to maintain > or = 95% vaccination coverage among children attending licensed child care centers and kindergarten through postsecondary school (objective 14-23). To identify children who have not been vaccinated in compliance with state law, all states, five large cities (Chicago, Houston, New York, Philadelphia, and San Antonio), and eight territories conduct annual vaccination assessment surveys of coverage with basi
