Arthroscopic or Open Excision of Intraarticular Osteoid Osteoma in the Elbow Joint - a Case Report.

Pain and stiffness are common symptoms that occur in many elbow pathologies. In the diagnostic algorithm for non-specific elbow pain, benign tumour lesions should be ruled out in rare cases. The following case presentations demonstrate that rare entities such as osteoid osteoma (OO) can be the cause for unclear elbow complaints.Three male patients presented with non-traumatic elbow pain over several months before seeking medical help for the first time. Their main concern was restricted Range of Motion (ROM). The plain radiographs were normal in ⅔ cases, and the CT-scans showed unspecific sign

Tuberculosis of the elbow joint: the complexity of diagnosis and treatment-A case report and review of literature.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis is one of the deadliest diseases worldwide, with an estimated incidence of more than 10 million new cases annually. As part of bone and joint tuberculosis (5-6% of all extrapulmonary tuberculosis cases), elbow tuberculosis is a rare manifestation-especially in the Western world-and is associated with nonspecific symptoms such as swelling, redness, and painful limitation of motion. This often leads to initial misdiagnoses, such as septic arthritis or rheumatoid arthritis, resulting in a significant delay in diagnosis and treatment. CASE PRESENTATION: A 27-year-old male

Ulnar Compression Neuropathy Secondary to Ganglion Cyst at the Elbow Joint: A Case Report.

Ulnar neuropathy is a common peripheral neuropathy, with cubital tunnel compression being the second most frequent upper extremity compression syndrome. Ganglion cysts, though rare, can contribute to ulnar nerve compression in the cubital tunnel. Here, we present a case of a 62-year-old farmer with longstanding diabetes and dyslipidemia who experienced progressive pain and numbness in his medial fingers, exacerbated by elbow flexion. Initially misdiagnosed and treated for Hansen's disease. Clinico-radiological evaluation revealed a multiloculated cystic lesion in the posteromedial aspect of hi

A single-surgeon experience with the internal joint stabilizer of the elbow across 56 cases.

BACKGROUND: Recurrent instability continues to plague outcomes of elbow trauma. Adjuvant stabilization-whether internal or external-is intended to acutely stabilize the elbow and off-load the repair construct(s) during early mobilization. Our objective was to report clinical outcomes for a single-surgeon consecutive series using the internal joint stabilizer (IJS) of the elbow. Furthermore, we intend to describe technical points that have been gleaned from the experience which may provide guidance. METHODS: A retrospective follow-up was performed for cases of elbow instability treated with th

[Performance control after arthroscopic arthrolysis with capsulectomy in fresh-frozen elbow joints].

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Posttraumatic or postoperative movement restrictions in elbow joints can often occur (including capsular contracture) and can generate everyday limitations. In persistent elbow stiffness, arthroscopic arthrolysis with removal of the dorsal and ventral capsule portions can be carried out. The purpose of this study was to assess the efficacy of arthroscopic capsulectomy by means of an in vitro anatomical study. METHODS: A standardized elbow arthroscopy with ventral and dorsal capsulectomy was performed and image-documented in five fresh-frozen elbow specimens. Subseque…

In vivo axial humero-ulnar rotation in normal and dysplastic canine elbow joints.

OBJECTIVE: To prospectively compare relative axial (internal-external) humero-ulnar rotation in normal and dysplastic canine elbow joints. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Six normal elbows (five dogs) and seven joints (six dogs) with coronoid disease were examined. After implantation of 0.8 mm tantalum beads into humerus and ulna, biplanar x-ray movies of the implanted elbows were taken while dogs were walking on a treadmill. Based on the 2D bead coordinates of the synchronized x-ray movies virtual 3D humero-ulnar animations were calculated. Based on these, relative internal-external humero-ulnar rotat…

Atypical Presentation of Tuberculosis of Elbow Joint in Operated Case of Distal Humerus Fracture.

INTRODUCTION: Nonunion following surgical stabilization of humeral shaft fractures, although infrequent, remains a challenge as limited surgical options are available. The difficulties in re-fixation are due to osteolysis produced by the loose implant components and disuse osteopenia of the entire bone segment. We share our experience in the management of a long standing diaphyseal nonunion of humerus following titanium LCP fixation. CASE REPORT: A 58 years old woman presented with 20 months old nonunion following titanium LCP fixation of her closed humeral shaft fracture, done elsewhere. The

Avulsion fracture of the supinator crest of the proximal ulna in the context of elbow joint injuries.

PURPOSE: While performing CT examinations of the elbow, we frequently observed a previously undescribed fracture fragment of the supinator crest of the ulna. According to the anatomy of the lateral collateral ligament complex, this fracture might be an avulsion fracture of the annular ligament and/or the lateral ulnar collateral ligament. The aim of this study was to further characterize these fragments and document their associated injuries. METHODS: Retrospective evaluation of CT scans of the elbow was performed. Conventional X-ray and CT diagnoses were used to systematically document any a

Subclinical neck pain and the effects of cervical manipulation on elbow joint position sense.

OBJECTIVE: The objectives of this study were to investigate whether elbow joint position sense (JPS) accuracy differs between participants with a history of subclinical neck pain (SCNP) and those with no neck complaints and to determine whether adjusting dysfunctional cervical segments in the SCNP group improves their JPS accuracy. METHOD: Twenty-five SCNP participants and 18 control participants took part in this pre-post experimental study. Elbow JPS was measured using an electrogoniometer (MLTS700, ADInstruments, New Zealand). Participants reproduced a previously presented angle of the elb…

Neglected fracture of the medial humeral epicondyle that was entrapped into the elbow joint: a case report.

The objective of this paper is to report clinical and radiographic long-term results of a neglected fracture of the medial humeral epicondyle, which was entrapped into the elbow joint. At follow-up, 48 years after the trauma, the patient complained of occasional discomfort around the elbow, but the joint had a normal range of motion and good stability. Radiographs showed that the epicondylar fragment was fused to the medial border of the olecranon. The authors conclude that an old fracture of the medial humeral epicondyle, presenting a fusion of the fragment to the olecranon with normal range …

Pigmented villonodular synovitis of the elbow treated with the Tsuge wide joint exposure technique.

Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) is a benign, locally aggressive disease of the synovium; its cause remains unclear. The most frequently involved joint is the knee, followed by the hip, ankle, wrist, and shoulder. Pigmented villonodular synovitis of the elbow joint is rare. Synovectomy is currently believed to be the best treatment for PVNS. Open or arthroscopic synovectomy is usually selected. During synovectomy for PVNS, the possibility of local recurrence after surgery must be considered. The recurrence rate after synovectomy of any joint for PVNS is approximately 40%. Therefore, sur…

The effect of medial collateral ligament repair tension on elbow joint kinematics and stability.

PURPOSE: Medial collateral ligament (MCL) repair is commonly performed for the management of acute or subacute instability after elbow dislocations and fracture-dislocations. The effectiveness of transosseous repair of the MCL, as is typically performed clinically, in restoring the normal kinematics and stability of the elbow is of interest as is the effect of MCL tensioning on the initial stability of the elbow. The purpose of this study was to determine whether suture repair of the MCL is able to restore the normal kinematics and stability of the elbow and to determine the optimal initial MC

Repetitive practice of a single joint movement for enhancing elbow function in hemiparetic patients.

The primary goal of this study was to assess whether repetitive practice of flexion-extension movements of the affected elbow in hemiparetic patients enhances performance and to compare the effects of this practice mode to the effects of the physical therapy variable exercise program which is routinely applied during sessions. Subjects were 27 poststroke hemiparetic patients, residents of a rehabilitation institute, divided into an experimental (n = 15) and a control group (n = 12). The former were treated with 800 repeated elbow movements in a maximal predetermined amplitude of 80 degrees, pr

A bipedicled chest wall flap to cover an open elbow joint in a burned infant.

A 7-month-old girl sustained a deep and extensive burn of the posterior aspect of the left upper arm and forearm, complicated by an open wound of the elbow joint with exposed bone and articular cartilage. A bipedicled chest wall flap was used to cover the defect. The limb was preserved along with good function in the elbow joint. An above-elbow amputation was thus avoided.

Research status of diagnosis and treatment of varus-posteromedial rotatory instability of the elbow joint.

BACKGROUND: Varus-posteromedial rotatory instability (VPMRI) of the elbow is a relatively uncommon yet significant injury that can often present with subtle clinical symptoms, such as mild joint misalignment. These initial symptoms may be easily overlooked or misdiagnosed, especially in the absence of overt signs of instability. As a result, the injury is frequently missed in early stages, leading to improper or delayed treatment. If left untreated, VPMRI can result in severe long-term complications, including rapid joint degeneration, traumatic arthritis, heterotopic ossification, elbow stiff
