Resolution of low voltage electrical injury induced psychosis with olanzapine.

BACKGROUND: The number of electrical injuries are rising in proportion to the increased use of electricity in both domestic and industrial sectors. There are multiple ways in which electricity can cause tissue damage, which can be due to direct effects, electroporation and thermal effects. However, these mechanisms fail to explain the enigmatous occurrences of diffuse and delayed neurological and psychological manifestations, especially those remote to the theoretical current pathway and in absence of any gross neurological abnormalities. Immediate neuropsychological sequelae have been well re

Effect of electrical charges and fields on injury and viability of airborne bacteria.

In this study, the effects of the electric charges and fields on the viability of airborne microorganisms were investigated. The electric charges of different magnitude and polarity were imparted on airborne microbial cells by a means of induction charging. The airborne microorganisms carrying different electric charge levels were then extracted by an electric mobility analyzer and collected using a microbial sampler. It was found that the viability of Pseudomonas fluorescens bacteria, used as a model for sensitive bacteria, carrying a net charge from 4100 negative to 30 positive elementary ch

Excessive reflexes in spinal cord injury triggered by electrical stimulation.

Interaction of electrocutaneous stimulation with an impaired human motor control system may result in unstable reflex loops causing excessive spastic reactions. These contractions are usually excluded from analysis since the presence of spasm is one of the criteria commonly applied for discarding a contraction. They may, however, provide interesting information on the nature of spasticity. The dorsiflexor muscles of four SCI subjects were activated by means of surface electrical stimulation and the isometric ankle moment was measured. Short bursts of constant stimulation frequency at seven dif

Electrical injuries in Canadian burn care. Identification of unsolved problems.

Over the past decade, the Firefighters' Burn Treatment Unit of the University of Alberta Hospital in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, has treated 1399 inpatients suffering from thermal injury. Regional burn care is provided in a 10-bed intensive care unit with 18 plastic surgery reconstructive beds for a large referral region of central and northern Alberta, portions of the Northwest Territories, and neighboring provinces of British Columbia and Saskatchewan. Of the total burn inpatients during this period, 74 electrical injuries were treated (5.3% of all admissions): 71 were males (95.9%) and 3 fem

Emergency treatment and early fluid resuscitation following electrical injuries.

Injuries caused by high-tension electrical current are rare, but pathophysiologically unique with destructive effects. As a form of thermal trauma, electrical injuries represent a connection of skin burns and deep tissue destruction unpredictable in its depth which mostly resembles a crush injury. Emergency treatment measures begin with the separation from the electrical contact if any and prompt transport to the nearest institution with all means for cardiorespiratory resuscitation and complete recovery. Resuscitation of the patient after electric shock continues then with fluid replacement u

Humeral head osteonecrosis caused by electrical injury: a case report.

Various musculoskeletal abnormalities caused by electrical injury are described. Such abnormalities usually include fractures or dislocation of adjacent bones and joints. Osteonecrosis is a noteworthy, but less common, consequence of electric shock. The case is discussed of a 52-year-old woman who had received an electric shock (220-V alternating household current) to the right hand and developed osteonecrosis in the ipsilateral humeral head, most likely caused by bone "melting." An osteonecrotic lesion may therefore develop in a joint at a distance from the point of electrical contact, and th

Electrical stimulation for voiding dysfunction after spinal cord injury.

Incontinence and frequency of voiding were present after spinal cord injuries in 18 patients. A hyperreflexic bladder and/or pelvic floor weakness was found in these patients. Functional electrical stimulation resulted in relief or improvement of symptoms in 9 of the 11 patients in whom this procedure was used. An increase in anal sphincter pressure with functional electrical stimulation was a more reliable criterion than an increase in maximum urethral pressure in the selection of patients for the procedure.

Age-stratified analysis of the severity of injuries in electric tricycle accidents among the elderly, compared with other age groups.

OBJECTIVE: Electric tricycles are widely used for short-distance passenger and freight transport in China, particularly in urban-fringe and rural areas. Their rapid growth has raised safety concerns because these vehicles provide limited occupant protection and frequently operate in mixed-traffic environments. This study examined age-related heterogeneity in injury severity among electric tricycle drivers and identified factors associated with severe/fatal injury outcomes across different age groups. METHODS: Police-reported electric tricycle crashes from 2020 to 2024 were analyzed. After dat

Delayed cervical spinal cord injury after high voltage electrical injury: a case report.

High voltage electrical injuries usually cause devastating consequences for patients, most of which result in permanent disability. Spinal cord injury (SCI) caused by high voltage electrical injury is uncommon in the literature. We present a 29-year-old male patient who was diagnosed as having delayed SCI after high voltage electrical injury. The patient developed muscle weakness in the lower extremities with the loss of pinprick sensation below the fifth cervical spinal segment, 2 days after the high voltage electrical injury. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain, cervical and thoracic spi

Electrical injury from subway third rails: serious injury associated with intermediate voltage contact.

BACKGROUND: Railway and subway-associated electrical trauma is rare and typically involves high voltage (> 20,000) arc injuries. Not all rail systems utilize such high voltage. We report 16 cases of electrical trauma due to 600 V direct contact with subway 'third' rails. METHODS: A case series of injured patients presenting to Shriners Burns Institute, Boston or Massachusetts General Hospital between 1970 and 1995 was retrospectively analyzed. RESULTS: A total of 16 cases was identified. Among seven subway workers, the mechanism of rail contact was unintentional by a tool, a hand or by falli

Electric scooter injuries in the pediatric population are increasing: an analysis of national injury trends and mechanisms between 2014 and 2023.

INTRODUCTION: The use of electric scooters (e-scooters) has surged over the past decade, leading to a notable rise in e-scooter related injuries presenting to emergency departments. This study aims to analyze trends and mechanisms of e-scooter injuries in the United States pediatric population. We hypothesized that there would be a significant increase in pediatric e-scooter injuries from 2014 to 2023, and particularly since the COVID-19 pandemic from 2020 to 2023, with many patients sustaining fractures. METHODS: The National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) was queried for pedi

Case report of a high voltage electrical injury and review of the indications for early fasciotomy in limb salvage of an electrically injured limb.

Electrical injuries make up a relatively small portion of burn injuries. Safety measures in place on domestic electricity supply have reduced the occurrence of high voltage electrical injuries. We present the case of a young man who sustained a high voltage electrical injury on all four limbs. Early fasciotomy was performed on both his hands and forearms. Despite early compartment release, the left upper limb deteriorated and required amputation. In this article we discuss the indications, outcomes and complications of early fasciotomy.
