Is electric field strength deterministic in cortical neurons' response to transcranial electrical stimulation?

Transcranial electrical stimulation (tES), which modulates cortical excitability via electric currents, has attracted increasing attention because of its application in treating neurologic and psychiatric disorders. To obtain a better understanding of the brain areas affected and stimulation's cellular effects, a multi-scale model was proposed that combines multi-compartmental neuronal models and a head model. While one multi-scale model of tES that used straight axons reported that the direction of electric field (EF) is a determining factor in a neuronal response, another model of transcrani

Electric field dynamics in the brain during multi-electrode transcranial electric stimulation.

Neural oscillations play a crucial role in communication between remote brain areas. Transcranial electric stimulation with alternating currents (TACS) can manipulate these brain oscillations in a non-invasive manner. Recently, TACS using multiple electrodes with phase shifted stimulation currents were developed to alter long-range connectivity. Typically, an increase in coordination between two areas is assumed when they experience an in-phase stimulation and a disorganization through an anti-phase stimulation. However, the underlying biophysics of multi-electrode TACS has not been studied in

Relation between the electric field and activation of cortical neurons in transcranial electrical stimulation.

BACKGROUND: To address the brain areas and circuits affected by transcranial electrical stimulation (tES), which had been used widely to treat psychiatric and neurological diseases, the stimulus-induced electric field in the cortex was calculated using a head model that reflects anatomical information. To obtain detailed information at the macroscopic and microscopic levels, multi-scale modeling was proposed that integrates the head model with multi-compartmental models of cortical neurons. OBJECTIVE: Our goal was to use multi-scale modeling to describe the relation between the stimulus-induc

Effect of stress induced by electrical stimulation of the hypothalamus on the electrical stability of the heart in rabbits.

The influence of stress on cardiac electrical stability (CES) and chaotic dynamics of the electrical activity of the heart was studied in acute and chronic experiments in rabbits. Stress was caused by 2-3 h daily immobilization of the animals with electrical stimulation of emotiogenic centers of the hypothalamus through implanted electrodes. CES was estimated by the thresholds for ventricular arrhythmia: paroxysmal ventricular tachycardia, repeated ventricular extrasystoles and ventricular fibrillation (VF). The results showed: (i) CES in stressed rabbits was decreased significantly compared w

Electric signaling behavior and the mechanisms of electric organ discharge production in mormyrid fish.

Mormyrid fish communicate and navigate using electric organ discharges (EODs). The EOD is highly stereotyped and provides information on sender identity, including species, sex, reproductive condition, and possibly relative status and individual identity. By contrast, the sequence of pulse intervals (SPI) is variable and plays more of a role in signaling behavioral states. Various types of SPI displays may be produced, including tonic patterns such as 'random' and 'regularized', and phasic patterns such as 'bursts' and cessations'. Certain displays have been linked to specific behaviors such a

Seawater desalination and autogenous salinity gradient for full-day electricity generation via an electrochemical system fabricated by all biomass-based materials.

Salinity gradient energy, which exists widely between two solutions with different concentrations, represents a substantial and renewable energy resource. Currently, harvesting the salinity gradient energy is largely confined to river estuaries, which significantly limits its applicability for island communities. To address this challenge, a three-compartment device that couples freshwater production with full-day electricity generation is developed, utilizing a carbonized biomass evaporator and electric double layer capacitive mixing technology. In the device, a Rattan-based solar-driven inte

CeO2@Co3O4-decorated carbon felt anode with mesoporous nanoparticles for enhanced POM wastewater treatment and electricity generation in microbial fuel cells.

Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) have been widely used in the treatment of organic wastewater because of its advantages of high efficiency, environmental friendliness, and no secondary pollution. In this study, we developed a composite anode, CeO2@Co3O4-PEDOT/CF (PEDOT: poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene), CF: carbon felt), by incorporating bimesoporous CeO2@Co3O4 nanoparticles and PEDOT layer. The MFCs equipped with this novel anode had demonstrated exceptional catalytic performance in the treatment of Polyoxymethylene (POM) wastewater. Specifically, it achieved a 74.9 % increase in output voltage (5

Evaluation of an electricity-independent method for IS2404 Loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) diagnosis of Buruli ulcer in resource-limited settings.

INTRODUCTION: Buruli ulcer (BU) caused by Mycobacterium ulcerans (MU) is a devastating necrotic skin disease. PCR, recommended for confirmation of BU by WHO, requires an adequately equipped laboratory, therefore often delaying timely diagnosis and treatment of BU patients in remote settings. Loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) is a PCR-based protocol for isothermal amplification of DNA that has been suggested for diagnosis of BU in low-resource settings. STUDY AIMS AND METHODS: This is an exploratory diagnostic test evaluation study, with an embedded qualitative sub-study. Its aims

Energy transition in a lockdown: An analysis of the impact of COVID-19 on changes in electricity demand in Lagos Nigeria.

In this study, we analyse the role of forced lockdowns on electricity consumption behaviour and its effect on momentary transition in electricity use. Electricity consumption data for residential, commercial and industrial consumers within the Lagos metropolis representing 259 electrical feeder locations were collected and analysed under three scenarios: first, we analyse a business-as-usual scenario without a lockdown; secondly, we analyse the case of a partial lockdown; and finally, we analyse the case of a total lockdown. The study revealed that aside government announcement of the lockdown

A synergistic heterostructured ZnO/BaTiO3 loaded carbon photoanode in photocatalytic fuel cell for degradation of Reactive Red 120 and electricity generation.

Photocatalytic fuel cell (PFC) is considered as a sustainable green technology which could degrade organic pollutant and generate electricity simultaneously. A synergistic double-sided ZnO/BaTiO3 loaded carbon plate heterojunction photoanode was fabricated in different ratios by using simple ultrasonication and mixed-annealed method. The double-sided design of photoanode allowed the lights irradiated at both sides of the photoanode. The ferroelectricity fabricated photoanode was applied in a membraneless PFC with platinum-loaded carbon as the cathode. Results revealed that the photoanode with

Self-generating electricity system driven by aqueous humor flow and trabecular meshwork contraction motion activated BCKa for glaucoma intraocular pressure treatment.

Primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) is the most common form of glaucoma and the leading cause of irreversible vision loss and blindness worldwide. Intraocular pressure (IOP) is the only modifiable risk factor, and prompt treatment to lower IOP can effectively slow the rate of vision loss due to glaucoma. Trabecular meshwork (TM) cells can maintain IOP homeostasis by correcting and adjusting the resistance to aqueous humor outflow in response to sustained pressure changes. TM cells' function is reduced, and membrane ion channels are impaired in POAG. The dysfunction of Large conductance Ca2+-act

Facilitated uranium and organic removal and electricity production via a zinc oxide/carbon felt cathode equipped hybrid tandem photocatalytic fuel cell.

The combined pollution by uranium and organic matter has posed a serious challenge in the treatment of radioactive wastewater, while traditional treatment methods suffered from the problems of poor treatment efficiency and difficult recycling. Therefore, this study developed a novel hybrid tandem photocatalytic fuel cell (HTPFC) system which decorated with a ZnO modified carbon felt (ZnO/CF) cathode. This HTPFC not only efficiently removed UO22+ and organic matter while generating electricity, but can also be quickly disassembled and reassembled. The ZnO loading greatly improved the electroche
