[Relevance of food allergies and intolerance reactions as causes of urticaria].

Adverse reactions to food can be identified as underlying causes in various urticarial diseases. Genuine IgE-dependent allergic reactions to food are known to play a role in acute urticaria (especially in young children), in some cases of exercise-induced urticaria, and in contact urticaria. Intolerance reactions to certain foods (pseudoallergens) are recognized causes of chronic urticaria. A thorough and detailed history, keeping a urticaria diary, quantification of specific serum IgE, and skin tests as well as elimination and provocation tests can help to identify food allergy or intolerance

[Food allergy and other adverse reactions caused by food].

Adverse reactions to foods are not infrequent. They may be mediated by immunological mechanisms (food allergy) or non-immunologically (idios … ther types of immune reactions may also be of importance. In the treatment of food allergy specific elimination diets as well as pharmacotherapy with the use of mast cell blocking agents are recommended. In single cases oral hyposensitization may be tried.

Roles of Lactose and Fructose Malabsorption and Dietary Outcomes in Children Presenting with Chronic Abdominal Pain.

Intolerance to lactose or fructose is frequently diagnosed in children with chronic abdominal pain (CAP). However, the causal relationship remains a matter of discussion. A cohort of 253 patients, aged 7-12 years, presenting with unexplained CAP received standardized diagnostics. Additional diagnostic tests were performed based on their medical history and physical and laboratory investigations. Fructose and lactose hydrogen breath tests (H2BT) as well as empiric diagnostic elimination diets were performed in 135 patients reporting abdominal pain related to the consumption of lactose or fructo…

Salicylamide pharmacokinetics in healthy males: dietary effect.

The effect of diet on the absorption, metabolism, and elimination of salicylamide (SAM), in man was studied in five healthy male volunteers. In a three-way cross-over study, 300 mg SAM capsules were administered under fasting, carbohydrate, and lipid diet conditions. Total urinary salicylates, salicylamide glucuronide (SAMG), and salicylamide sulphate (SAMS) were determined at different time intervals. Diet was found to have no significant effect on the extent of SAM absorption or on its apparent elimination half-life. A significant increase (P less than 0.001) in the fraction excreted as SAMS

Elimination of microglia in mouse spinal cord alters the retrograde CNS plasticity observed following peripheral axon injury.

Following the transection of peripherally located sympathetic preganglionic axons of the cervical sympathetic trunk (CST), transient retrograde neuronal and glial responses occur in the intermediolateral cell column (IML) of the spinal cord, the location of the parent neuronal cell bodies. The role of microglia in this central response to peripheral axon injury was examined in mice fed the PLX5622 diet containing colony-stimulating factor-1 receptor (CSF-1R) inhibitor for 28 days, which eliminated approximately 90% of spinal cord microglia. Microglia elimination did not impact baseline neurotr

Passage of food antigens into circulation of breast-fed infants with atopic dermatitis.

We have selected 13 babies presenting with atopic dermatitis during exclusive breast feeding. After evaluation of reaginic reaction, we detected beta-lactoglobulin (BLG) in breast milk and babies sera before and after maternal elimination diet and after maternal challenge. beta-Lactoglobulin was present only in the sera of infants ingesting breast milk containing BLG. We have seen reaginic reactions to cow's milk in seven babies. The maternal elimination diet improved eczema in 11/13 infants, maternal challenge worsened atopic dermatitis in 9/9 children. We demonstrated the transport of food a

The influence of components of diet on the symptoms of ADHD in children.

In most children with ADHD the cause of the disease is not exactly known, and its etiology is multifactorial. The conventional treatment is based on the combination of behavioral and psychological therapy and the pharmacotherapy. The pharmacotherapy has a high effectiveness in ADHD treatment, but it is often associated with undesirable side effects, such as: loss of appetite and weight, growth inhibition, abdominal pain, headaches, sleeping problems and increased blood pressure. In the recent years, much attention was devoted to the issue of an appropriate diet in this disease, especially when

The effects of dietary thiamin on voluntary ethanol drinking and ethanol metabolism in the rat.

1. The influence of a deficiency or surplus of thiamin in the diet on voluntary ethanol consumption, ethanol elimination rate and blood acetaldehyde concentration was studied in rats. 2. Both the high-thiamin diet containing 20 mg thiamin hydrochloride/kg and the thiamin deficient diet containing no measurable thiamin produced obvious functional effects on thiamin metabolism in rat tissues after 4 weeks as demonstrated by measurements of the blood transketolase (sedoheptulose-7-phosphate: D-glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate glycolaldehyde-transferase; EC 2.2.1.1) activity and the extent of thiamin py

New approaches to diet therapy for eosinophilic esophagitis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: An empiric step-up (2-4-6) elimination diet remains the most common dietary approach in clinical practice when treating eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE). However, research in this field has fallen behind pharmacological therapy. This review aims to summarize novel approaches to dietary therapy for EoE. RECENT FINDINGS: A first prospective multicenter study in 41 pediatric patients (mean age 9 years) has evaluated the efficacy of a cow's milk elimination diet. This dietary approach led to histological remission in 51% of patients, albeit a caveat is that up to 80% of patients

Nutritional aspects of detoxification in clinical practice.

Detoxification is a vital cellular task that, if lacking, can lead to early morbidity and mortality. The process of detoxification involves the mobilization, biotransformation, and elimination of toxicants of exogenous and endogenous origin. This article discusses the phase I and phase II detoxification and biotransformation pathways and promotes using food to support these highly complex processes. The author identifies the comprehensive elimination diet as a useful therapeutic tool for clinicians and patients to use to achieve detoxification. Using this diet, the patient removes the most com

From breast to bite: Nutritional management in infantile food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome (FPIES).

Food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome (FPIES) is a non-IgE-mediated food allergy that presents primarily in infancy. Managing nutrition in infants with FPIES presents unique challenges due to its lack of diagnostic biomarkers and the high potential for feeding difficulties, restricted diets, and growth faltering. Breastfed infants may occasionally react to trace food proteins in human milk, requiring maternal elimination diets and cautious reintroduction strategies. Formula-fed infants with cow's milk- or soy-triggered FPIES may need extensively hydrolyzed or amino acid-based formulas. I…

Dietary recommendations of the French Society for Rheumatology for patients with chronic inflammatory rheumatic diseases.

This article presents the 1st set of dietary recommendations of the French Society for Rheumatology for patients suffering from chronic inflammatory rheumatic diseases (IRD) made by a working group consisting of 12 rheumatology experts, 3 physician nutrition specialists, 1 internal medicine specialist, 1 registered dietician and 3 representatives from patient associations. This group relied on a systematic literature review and on expert opinions, while taking into consideration not only the joint effects of diet in IRD but also the extra-articular ones. Eight general principles and nine recom

The Role of Allergy Testing in Treatment Selection of Pediatric Eosinophilic Esophagitis.

INTRODUCTION: Eosinophilic Esophagitis (EoE) is a chronic and recurrent disease characterized by symptoms associated with esophageal dysfunction and histopathologically by eosinophil-predominant inflammation. Our study aims to evaluate the role of diagnostic allergy tests in the selection of food elimination diets in EoE using real-world data and to compare the efficacy of medical treatment alone versus medical treatment with dietary intervention. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 53 patients with complete data who were followed with a diagnosis of EoE at the Pediatric Allergy…

[Dr. Atkins' dietetic revolution: a critique].

Very fat people die earlier than people of normal weight because hypertension, diabetes and coronary disease are more frequent among the markedly obese. Most obese subjects, however, are only slightly overweight and their mortality is not elevated. Reasons for dieting are more often psychological than somatic. 2. Reducing diets are ineffective because the obese rarely follow them. Total fasting and intestinal bypass may provide better results, but are more dangerous. 3. Atkins' diet eliminates carbohydrates from food without restricting protein and fat intake. Deprived of carbohydrates, the bo

From anaphylaxis to eosinophilic esophagitis during omalizumab treatment in a boy with severe asthma and food allergy: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the esophagus with symptoms of esophageal dysfunction. It is strongly associated with other atopic conditions in patients and has therefore been recognized as a late manifestation of the atopic march. Sensitization to foods and/or aeroallergens early in life may predispose some individuals to subsequent EoE development. Moreover, the disease was found to emerge as a potential side effect of oral immunotherapy (OIT). However, it remains unclear whether OIT induces or rather "unmasks" a pre-existing but subclinical d

Identifying Predictors for the Acquisition of Tolerance to Cow's Milk Protein in Infants with Food Protein-Induced Allergic Proctocolitis (FPIAP): Multifactorial Analysis of Two Italian Cohorts.

Background/Objectives: Food protein-induced allergic proctocolitis (FPIAP) is a non-IgE-mediated gastrointestinal food allergy. Although tolerance to the culprit food is usually achieved within the first year of life, late acquisition occurs and remains poorly predictable. This study aimed to analyze clinical characteristics and explore factors that may potentially function as predictors of late tolerance acquisition to cow's milk (CM). Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study at two Italian pediatric clinics (2020-2024), including infants diagnosed with FPIAP. Clinical, dietary, and immu

[Protein -based diet with respect to the principles of rational nutrition. Menus analysis].

INTRODUCTION: A diet high in protein and low in carbohydrates has four phases, first of them being the attack phase, which eliminates carbohydrates to the highest extent. In subsequent phases the consumption of carbohydrates is gradually allowed but their ratio is limited. The aim of performed studies was to analyze the metabolic effects of protein -based diet. The hypothesis – the analysis based on the composition of the diets should draw the attention to health risks being not only related to too high consumption of protein. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In the study, 40 diets were composed accord
