The location of lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (LFCN) in relation to the anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS) and the iliac crest was investigated in 96 embalmed cadaveric specimens. Fifty-six nerves (58.3%) passed medial to the ASIS. Twenty-two nerves (22.9%) passed at the ASIS. Eighteen nerves (18.8%) passed lateral to the ASIS. The LFCN is usually located at 2.1 +/- 0.8 to 3.9 +/- 1.0 cm below the crest in the range of 2-5 cm lateral to the ASIS, respectively. A 16-year-old boy was stricken with a progressive neurologic disorder characterized primarily by dementia progressing to severe neurologic debility in 12 months and death 28 months following the first symptoms. Pathologic examination showed a spongiform encephalopathy, consistent witha clinical diagnosis of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD). This anatomical study defines a safe zone for percutaneous or minimally invasive fixation of first metacarpal fractures in order to avoid injury of the superficial branch of the radial nerve and the dorsal branch of the radial artery. Dissection of embalmed and untreated water buffalo carcasses (n=10) revealed that hernias had occurred at the musculotendinous junction of the diaphragm, ventral to the foramen venae cavae and slightly lateral to the median plane. The diameter of the hernial ring varied from 7 cm to 20 cm. Herniation was more common in the right thoracic cavity with the reticulum firmly adherent to the hernia ring. Adhesions between the herniated portion of the reticulum and pleura, lung, pericardium or thoracic wall were present, while in a few cases thick fibrous tracts concealing metallic bodies were found.
