Embryology of the urogenital tract; a practical overview for urogynecologic surgeons.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Urinary tract anomalies are one of the most common birth defects. Nevertheless, they prove challenging to diagnose as a result of variable presenting symptoms. We aimed to perform a review of urogenital tract development, highlight common congenital upper urinary tract anomalies encountered by urogynecologists and tools to facilitate diagnosis. METHODS: Multiple searches were performed utilizing resources such as PubMed and the TriHealth library database to access publications related to embryology of the urinary tract and urinary tract anomalies. Each citation wa…

[Contributions of embryology and comparative anatomy for teaching of cranial nerves].

Some authors propose a global approach, including imaging, to describe cranial nerves from a clinical point of view. If we can agree to a certain extent with this proposal, we consider that the use of a medical point of view can neglect histological and embryological features which contribute to a better understanding of nerve function. For example, it is false to consider totally "nerves" I and II as "sensory cranial nerves". They are not true nerves, but derive manly from direct expansions of the central nervous system. They differ fundamentally from cranial nerves, except for the fibers pre

Accurate diagnosis of prenatal cleft lip/palate by understanding the embryology.

Cleft lip with or without cleft palate (CP) is one of the most common congenital malformations. Ultrasonographers involved in the routine 20-wk ultrasound screening could encounter these malformations. The face and palate develop in a very characteristic way. For ultrasonographers involved in screening these patients it is crucial to have a thorough understanding of the embryology of the face. This could help them to make a more accurate diagnosis and save time during the ultrasound. Subsequently, the current postnatal classification will be discussed to facilitate the communication with the C…

Case series: variations in the embryology of congenital midline cervical clefts.

Congenital midline cervical clefts (CMCC) is a clinical diagnosis and represents a spectrum of rare developmental anomalies. Fewer than 100 … onents and the second case appears to be solely branchial in origin. There is much debate as to the embryology of this clinical entity; we shall endeavour to address the main theories.

Atretic cephalocele--report of two cases with special reference to embryology.

We report two cases of atretic cephalocele, a diverse form of cranium bifidum. The patients were 15-year-old and 3-month-old girls, who each had a hard, nonpulsatile, nonreducible lump covered by alopecic scalp in the parieto-occipital area. They were surgically treated. In case 2, microscopical examination of the operative specimen revealed a meninges under the mass, which was devoid of nervous tissue. Such lesions have rarely been reported, and their essential nature is still the subject of controversy. Pathological and embryological aspects of atretic cephalocele are discussed on the basis

Poland syndrome: a concept of pathogenesis based on limb bud embryology.

A study of 15 patients as well as a review of the literature was made to determine the etiology of Poland syndrome. Neither the associated pathologic features nor any pattern of prenatal factors were helpful in revealing an etiology. A theory of primary nerve root dysgenesis was disproven. However, a concept of a localized insult at a particular embryonic stage based on known limb bud development is presented as a possible explanation of pathogenesis.

Morphohistometric evaluation of the embryological development of the heart in chicks.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to investigate the morphohistometric development of the chick heart at certain incubation periods using quantitative methods. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In the study, the hearts of 24 Babcock White Leghorn chicks, six each from the 10th, 13th, 16th and 21st days of incubation, were used. The hearts were weighed, and their diameters were measured with a digital caliper. Paraffin blocks of heart tissue were then prepared, and serial sections were taken at 5 μm and 10 μm thickness, stained with Crossmon's triple staining method and photographed under a microsco

The Anatomy and Embryology of Tetralogy of Fallot With Pulmonary Atresia.

In this review, we approach the main morphologic and developmental aspects of the congenital cardiovascular malformation known as tetralogy of Fallot with pulmonary atresia. It is recognized that pulmonary atresia associated with a deficient ventricular septation can occur in several situations. However, the tetralogy presentation in particular, with frequent but not invariable concomitance of systemic-to-pulmonary collateral arteries supplying the lungs entirely or in part, poses surgical challenges. The variations in the morphology of such collateral arteries and the intracardiac anatomy are

Peritoneal carcinomatosis: A malignant disease with an embryological origin?

INTRODUCTION: In 1931, Simpson et al. coined the term "peritoneal carcinomatosis" to describe the regional spread of ovarian tumors as localized or extended with involvement of the peritoneal serous membrane and neighboring anatomical structures. Research into the origin of peritoneal carcinomatosis is based on two phases in a woman's life: EMBRYO DEVELOPMENT: During week 3, the bilaminar disc becomes a trilaminar disc called the mesoderm. Inside the lateral plate mesoderm, the coelomic cavity is divided into 2 layers: the parietal (somatic) mesoderm, which gives rise to the parietal peritoneu

A new embryological theory of the pancreatic duct system.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: To clarify the anatomy of the pancreatic duct system and to investigate its embryology. METHODS: We reviewed pancreatograms of 256 patients with a normal pancreatic head and 36 cases of complete pancreas divisum. RESULTS: Accessory pancreatograms were divided into two patterns. The long-type accessory pancreatic duct (APD) forms a straight line and joins the main pancreatic duct (MPD) at the neck portion of the pancreas. The short-type APD joins the MPD near its first inferior branch. The short-type APD is less likely to have a long inferior branch arising from the APD. The …

The embryologic origin of ventral body wall defects.

Ventral body wall defects include ectopia cordis, bladder exstrophy, and the abdominal wall malformations gastroschisis and omphalocele. The etiology of ectopia cordis, gastroschisis, and bladder exstrophy is not known, but they may be linked to abnormalities in the lateral body wall folds responsible for closing the thoracic, abdominal, and pelvic portions of the ventral body wall. These folds form in the fourth week (postfertilization) of development as a combination of the parietal layer of lateral plate mesoderm and overlying ectoderm and must move ventrally to meet in the midline. There a

Genetics and embryological mechanisms of congenital heart diseases.

Developmental genetics of congenital heart diseases has evolved from analysis of embryo sections towards molecular genetics of cardiac morphogenesis with a dynamic view of cardiac development. Lineage analysis, transgenic animal models and retrospective clonal analysis of the developing heart led to identification of different cardiac lineages and their respective roles. Genetics of congenital heart diseases has also changed from formal genetic analysis of familial recurrences or population based analysis to screening for mutations in candidates genes identified in animal models. Based on thes

[Atrial septal defect. A morphopathological and embryological study].

To contribute to a better understanding of the morphopathology of atrial septal defects (ASD), we describe and classify topographically a series of hearts obtained from necropsies. We performed an anatomo-embryological correlation to gain insight on the pathogenesis of this type of congenital heart disease. Seventy-one hearts with ASD and twenty-three normal hearts with patent foramen ovale from the collection at the Instituto Nacional de Cardiologia lgnacio Chavez were studied morphologically; segmental sequential analysis was used. The topography of the interatrial septum was determined on t

Ectopic stapes: a case report with embryologic correlations.

A case report of unilateral congenital stapes misplacement revealed by computed tomography is presented. In addition to this malformation, the malleus was synostosed to the middle ear roof. This kind of stapes ectopia has not been described previously. We have analyzed the malformative pattern in the light of normal and teratologic development of the stapes. In a teratologic model in which retinoic acid is administered to pregnant mice, we have observed an ectopic stapes primordium independent of the otic capsule. We discuss the possible pathogenesis of this abnormality in terms of the genetic

Fabricating a face: the essence of embryology in the dental curriculum.

The current explosive growth in developmental biology, fuelled by the almost completed sequencing of the human genome, is bound to have a profound impact upon the practice of medicine and dentistry in the twenty-first century. No other discipline more accurately reflects this impact than embryology, which combines the basic and clinical sciences of genetics, ontogeny, phylogeny, teratology, and syndromology into the essence of modern medical and dental practice. The advent of in vitro fertilization, chorionic villus sampling, amniocentesis, prenatal ultrasonography, intrauterine surgery, and s…
