Research to date focuses on how people regulate their emotions, but more commonly, people do not regulate. We built a bottom-up taxonomy of reasons for investigating why. In Study 1a (N = 250 U.K. community members; collected in 2023) people who did not regulate during a recent stressful event were asked to describe their reasons. We established a list of 14 reasons, and a new sample rated their agreement (Study 1b, N = 248, United Kingdom; 2023). Study 2 (N = 326, Australia; 2024) investigated reason frequency in everyday life using experience sampling. Our studies were conducted in English a

Research on emotion regulation (ER) and aggression has increased rapidly in the past years, but heterogeneity across studies make integration of findings challenging. To estimate the size and consistency of the relationship between ER and aggression we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis. In total, 16,369 articles were retrieved from Scopus, PubMed, PsycINFO, and CINAHL, and 137 articles (171 studies) provided 918 effect sizes from a total sample of N = 252,605. Multilevel models showed significant pooled relationships, with small-to-moderate effects. Use of adaptive strategies was

Schizotypy is a multidimensional construct encompassing clinical and subclinical expressions of schizophrenia-spectrum psychopathology that is composed of positive, negative, and disorganized dimensions. These dimensions are differentially associated with disruptions in emotional experience; however, few studies have examined the association of multidimensional schizotypy with emotion regulation (ER). The present study employed experience sampling methodology (ESM) to examine the hypothesis that there are differential associations of positive, negative, and disorganized schizotypy with ER stra

Cluster B personality disorders, including Borderline, Histrionic, Narcissistic, and Antisocial personality disorders, collectively affect up to 5.5% of the population. These disorders are characterized by strong emotional responses; however, little research compares specific symptomatology with emotion regulation ability. The current study examines the relationship between subscales of the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale and symptomatology across Cluster B disorders in a mixed non-clinical sample. In Study 1 (N = 325), participants completed self-report measures assessing emotion reg

The high prevalence of mental health problems, especially in adolescence, promotes research on psychological interventions. Recently, focus has shifted from disorder specific to transdiagnostic interventions. Since emotion regulation (ER) underlies various mental disorders, targeting this transdiagnostic mechanism is Particulary interesting. The current study aimed to investigate the feasibility and effectiveness of an emotion regulation training for children and adolescents (EuREKA) in six adolescents (M = 12.50, SD = 1.52; 50% girls) enrolled in an inpatient treatment center for internalizin

Adaptive emotion regulation can buffer against cardiac reactivity under acute stress. However, research on the effectiveness of emotion regulation in the face of interpersonal stress is scarce. We therefore conducted an experiment investigating whether emotion regulation might buffer against parasympathetically mediated cardiac reactivity during conflict. Couples engaged in a 10-min conflict discussion (N = 253 participants included in the final analyses). Prior to the discussion, one partner per couple was randomly assigned to one of three experimental conditions (acceptance, cognitive reappr

BACKGROUND: Emotion dysregulation (ED), the difficulty in modulating which emotions are felt, and when and how they are expressed or experienced, has been implicated in an array of psychological disorders. Despite potentially different manifestations depending on the disorder, this symptom is emerging as a transdiagnostic construct that can and should be targeted early, given the associations with various maladaptive behaviors as early as childhood and adolescence. As such, our goal was to investigate the psychotherapeutic interventions used to address ED and gauge their effectiveness, safety,

Sleep has a profound effect on our mood, but insight in the mechanisms underlying this association is still lacking. We tested whether emotion regulation is a mediator in the relationship between fragmented sleep and mood disturbance. The effect of fragmented sleep on the emotion regulation strategies, including cognitive reappraisal, distraction, acceptance and suppression ability, was assessed. We further tested whether the use of these strategies, as well as rumination and self-criticism, mediated the association between fragmented sleep and negative and positive affect. Participants (N = 6

Emotion regulation is important for psychological health and can be achieved by implementing various strategies. How one regulates emotions is critical for maximizing psychological health. Few studies, however, tested the psychological correlates of different emotion regulation strategies across multiple cultures. In a preregistered cross-cultural study (N = 3,960, 19 countries), conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic, we assessed associations between the use of seven emotion regulation strategies (situation selection, distraction, rumination, cognitive reappraisal, acceptance, expressive supp

Self-compassion (SC) seems to play an important role in improving Emotion Regulation (ER). Nevertheless, the results of previous studies regarding the links between SC and ER are not consistent, especially facing diverse models of ER (strategy-based vs skill-based). The goal of this prospective study was to evaluate the links between these three concepts, by testing the predictive roles of SC and ER skills on both ER adaptive and maladaptive strategies, using standardised questionnaires and visual analogue scales. Results of regression analysis showed that self-compassion positively predicts c

OBJECTIVE: Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory (RST) provides a theoretical foundation associated with various approach and avoidance behaviors and individual personality differences. Sensitivity to reward and punishment, two neural systems within the RST have been significantly associated with bingeing and purging behaviors. However, inconsistent findings are observed and specific factors mediating these relationships are not well understood. Deficits in emotion regulation may account for these relationships, as both negative urgency and distress tolerance have been independently associated with

Emotion regulation literature often emphasizes that individuals regulate their emotions for hedonic reasons. However, there is increasing support for an instrumental approach to emotion regulation. This approach suggests that emotions are regulated if they are believed to be beneficial to the pursuit of personally relevant goals. When pursuing a long-term goal, an individual may forego immediate, hedonic emotional reward in order to maximize the instrumental benefits of emotions. The current study investigates emotion regulation behaviour in the context of musical practice. We examine whether

Research on emotion regulation (ER) strategies has often relied on trait self-report measures, where individuals retrospectively report their tendency to engage in a specific strategy. Although this method is convenient and useful in many clinical and research settings, it is subject to a number of response and memory biases and may not accurately reflect ER as it is naturalistically employed in daily life. We examined the ecological validity of 10 self-report measures of ER strategies (i.e., acceptance, behavioral avoidance, experiential avoidance, expressive suppression, procrastination, rea

BACKGROUND: Negative emotional states contribute to cigarette smoking, and difficulties in regulating these states can hinder smoking cessation. Understanding the neural bases of these difficulties in smokers may facilitate development of novel therapies for Tobacco Use Disorder.
METHODS: Thirty-seven participants (18 smokers, 19 nonsmokers; 16-21 years old) completed the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS), which is comprised of 6 subscales (lack of emotional clarity, lack of emotional awareness, limited access to emotion regulation strategies, nonacceptance of emotional response

Cardiac rehabilitation is important to improve physical activity and reduce cardiovascular disease risk factors among people who have experienced a major cardiac event. However, poor emotion regulation can make it difficult to change cardiovascular risk factors. The purpose of this article was to assess the feasibility of the Regulating Emotions to improve Nutrition Exercise and reduce Stress (RENEwS) intervention, an education program aimed at improving emotion regulation strategies among patients in cardiac rehabilitation. A total of 14 cardiac rehabilitation patients (mean age 61 years) enr

BACKGROUND: Women with Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) are more likely to have a history of childhood trauma, and may experience more severe premenstrual symptomatology. However, the pathway in which childhood trauma affects the prevalence and severity of premenstrual symptoms remains largely unclear.
OBJECTIVE: To determine whether childhood trauma is associated with increased premenstrual symptoms, and if so, whether emotional dysregulation mediates or moderates this relationship.

The goal of this meta-analysis was to examine the associations between specific emotion regulation abilities (emotional awareness, emotional clarity) and strategies (acceptance of emotions, reappraisal, problem-solving, rumination, avoidance of emotions, and suppression), and eating pathology. A total of 96 studies and 239 effect sizes were included in the analysis. Relations between global and specific emotion regulation abilities and strategies and eating disorders and eating-related symptoms were examined. Results indicated medium-to-large effect sizes for the associations between adaptive

Background Risky behaviors have been related to emotional regulation and attachment, which may constitute risk factors for developing an addictive behavior. However, there may also be differences between substance and non-substance-related addictions. Aims This study aimed to examine the relationship of emotional regulation and attachment, with substance (alcohol and drug abuse), and non-substance-related addictions (gambling disorder, video game addiction, and problematic Internet use) in adolescents and emerging adults. The study also aimed to examine gender differences for such predictors. …
