Colored perfluorocarbon liquids as novel intraoperative tools.

BACKGROUND: Perfluorocarbon liquids (PFCLs) are used as intraoperative tools to stabilize the retina during vitreoretinal surgeries. Their use would be much facilitated if PFCLs were colored and not transparent. We describe the development of a colored PFCL for vitreoretinal surgeries. METHODS: Perfluorohexyloctan (F6H8) was colored by adding a blue, biocompatible anthraquinone dye, and then mixed with perfluorodecalin (PFD) or perfluorooctane (PFO) at different volume percentages. The thus-obtained colored PFCLs were incubated with lens, lens capsule, vitreous body, and retina of enucleated

Non-inverted and single-layer "plastic bag" ILM flap novel technique to treat large macular holes.

PURPOSE: To assess the efficacy and safety of a novel non-inverted, free single-layer internal limiting membrane (ILM) flap technique for treating large full-thickness macular holes (FTMHs). METHODS: Patients with FTMHs underwent a standard 3-port pars plana vitrectomy using the 23-gauge vitrectomy system. Unique to this technique, a "tongue-shaped" ILM flap was initially created, followed by the formation of two "handles" and the bottom of "plastic bag" ILM flaps. Under perfluoro-n-octane (PFO), the two-point fixed "plastic bag" ILM flap was transferred to the free flap and dragged to cover

Modified surgical technique for improving donor adherence in DSAEK in the aphakic vitrectomized eye.

We describe a modified technique for performing Descemet stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (DSAEK) in a patient with aphakia and vitrectomized eye. A 72-year-old woman presented with corneal decompensation after a complicated cataract surgery and a subsequent vitreoretinal procedure. Before commencing DSAEK, a pars plana infusion cannula was inserted 3 mm from the limbus. The infusion fluid in the vitrectomized posterior segment helped circumvent potential complications, such as recurrent globe collapse, posterior dislocation of the donor disc, and loss of air tamponade. Increasing

High intraocular pressure in four vitrectomized eyes with intravitreal C3F8 without high altitude travel.

IMPORTANCE: It is well known that altitude ascent with intravitreal gas can cause expansion of gas and intraocular pressure (IOP) elevation. According to Boyle's law, the gas bubble will not expand unless a higher altitude than the gas insertion site has been reached. We report four cases in which intravitreal gas was injected at an altitude of 790 m (Jerusalem). All four cases developed high IOP even though they did not reach a higher altitude in their post-operative period. OBSERVATIONS: A report of four patients following vitrectomy with 12% mixture of perfluoropropane and air are presente
