This essay examines the role that entomological workers played in U.S. public health efforts during the construction of the Panama Canal (1904-1914). Entomological workers were critical to mosquito control efforts aimed at the reduction of tropical fevers such as malaria. But in the process of studying vector mosquitoes, they discovered that many of the conditions that produced mosquitoes were not intrinsic to tropical nature per se but resulted from the human-caused environmental disturbances that accompanied canal building. This realization did not mesh well with an American ideology of trop

Yellow fever (YF) is frequently associated with high severity and death rates in the Amazon region of Brazil. During the rainy seasons of 1998 and 1999, 23 (eight deaths) and 34 (eight deaths) human cases of YF were reported, respectively, in different geographic areas of Pará State; most cases were on Marajó Island. Patients were 1 to 46 years of age. Epidemiologic and ecological studies were conducted in Afuá and Breves on Marajó Island; captured insects yielded isolates of 4 and 11 YF strains, respectively, from Haemagogus janthinomys pooled mosquitoes. The cases on Marajó Island in 1999 re

Here, we present a protocol for digitizing envelope-preserved entomological museum specimens. We describe steps for acquiring images, transcribing labels into Darwin Core records, and validating taxonomy and geography. We then detail procedures for linking images to metadata and automatically generating searchable specimen and taxon HTML pages for open-access publication. We demonstrate the workflow using Odonata specimens from the Zoological Museum of Sapienza University of Rome. For complete details, please refer to Tamagnini et al.1.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL), endemic in Shiraz, Iran, is caused by Leishmania major (zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis, ZCL) and L. tropica (anthroponotic cutaneous leishmaniasis, ACL). This study investigated transmission drivers, including sand fly vectors, zoonotic and environmental factors, and the genetic diversity of L. major. A total of 1029 sand flies were collected indoors and outdoors in Shiraz from August to October using sticky traps. Samples from patient lesions (n = 30) and pooled female sand flies (n = 40 pools) were examined by microscopy and screened by PCR targeting kDNA and

Dengue outbreaks have occurred in Burkina Faso since 2013, but the country experienced its first chikungunya outbreak in Pouytenga in 2023. Thus, a field investigation was undertaken to determine entomological risk factors associated with the chikungunya outbreak to inform decision-making and respond to the outbreak. Field entomological investigations were performed during the chikungunya outbreak in Pouytenga in September-October 2023. Adult mosquitoes were collected indoors and outdoors using Prokopack aspirators in selected households, while BG-sentinel traps were deployed in public places

INTRODUCTION: Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is a major public health concern in Iran and particularly in Isfahan Province. Although numerous studies have determined the phlebotomine sand-fly fauna and CL occurrence in this region, no dedicated investigation of sand fly spatial distribution and Risk mapping has been conducted in recent years. Furthermore, no previous study has systematically assessed leishmaniasis vectors across 19 distinct sites in this province over a continuous five-year period from 2019 to 2023. Therefore, this study conducted comprehensive entomological surveillance to dete

In the Yucatan Peninsula, tropical preserved forests harbor a high diversity of phlebotomine sand fly species, potential vectors of Leishmania. As a result, a significant risk of contracting localized cutaneous leishmaniasis (LCL) is associated with entry into these forest ecosystems. However, with the current trajectory of land use in the region, communities now live within modified landscapes which could increase their risk of contact with vectors. In this study, we characterized the sand fly fauna and its relationship with the characteristics of peridomestic habitats in two rural communitie

BACKGROUND: In 2018, the National Malaria Control Programme in Vietnam switched from prioritizing malaria control to elimination. However, with the ongoing elimination programme, there are still areas where residual malaria transmission persists, including the central highlands. This entomological survey was conducted to evaluate Anopheles diversity and host-seeking activity of Anopheles vectors in two communes with very low malaria transmission in Gia Lai Province.
METHODS: Anopheles species were collected in Ia DReh commune and Ia KDam commune, Gia Lai Province in the central highlands of V

Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) poses a major threat of introduction to several continents, including North America. Such an introduction could cause significant losses to the livestock industry, in addition to substantial human morbidity and mortality. Because of the opportunistic blood host selection of Culex tarsalis mosquitoes, we hypothesized that this species could be an important bridge vector of RVFV near feedlots in the event of an introduction. We investigated the mosquito community composition at livestock feedlots and surrounding natural and residential areas to determine difference

Extrapolating landscape regression models for use in assessing vector-borne disease risk and other applications requires thoughtful evaluation of fundamental model choice issues. To examine implications of such choices, an analysis was conducted to explore the extent to which disparate landscape models agree in their epidemiological and entomological risk predictions when extrapolated to new regions. Agreement between six literature-drawn landscape models was examined by comparing predicted county-level distributions of either Lyme disease or Ixodes scapularis vector using Spearman ranked corr

BACKGROUND: In Colombia for several years, the Urabá-Bajo Cauca and Alto Sinú region has registered the highest numbers of malaria cases in the country. Malaria vector incrimination and the characterization of entomological parameters will allow for a better understanding of malaria transmission dynamics and the design of effective vector control strategies for this region.
METHODS: We conducted a longitudinal survey between November 2008 and June 2010 to quantify entomological (abundance and biting activity) and transmission parameters, including infection rate (IR) and entomological inocula

To better understand the ecology of West Nile virus transmission in Northern Colorado, field studies were conducted in Larimer and Weld counties from September 2003 through March 2005. During summer studies, 18,540 adult mosquitoes were collected using light traps and gravid traps. West Nile virus RNA was detected in 24 of the 2,140 mosquito pools tested throughout the study area in 2003 and 2004. Culex tarsalis had the highest minimum infection rate (MIR) in both 2003 (MIR = 34.48) and in 2004 (MIR = 8.74). During winter studies, 9,391 adult mosquitoes were collected by aspirator from various
