[Epidemiology and risk factors of cerebral arterial accidents].

In France, available epidemiologic data (mortality statistics, Paris prospective study)--although still insufficient--indicate: 1) that arterial strokes account for about 13 per cent of all deaths, and 2) that their annual incidence in men aged 40 to 60 is around 0.6 per thousand and increases sharply thereafter. These results are comparable to those of other industrialized countries, with the exception of Japan where the actual incidence of arterial strokes seems to be higher. Age and high blood pressure are the major risk factors and causes of the various types of ischaemic and haemorrhagic

Incidence and Risk Factors for Pregnancy-Related de Quervain's Tenosynovitis in South Korea: A Population-Based Epidemiologic Study.

BACKGROUND: Although pregnant or lactating women have been recognized to be predisposed to de Quervain's tenosynovitis (DQT), there is a lack of epidemiologic evidence. The purpose of this study was to estimate the nationwide incidence of pregnancy-related DQT (PRDQT) and to analyze risk factors using the Korean National Health Insurance (NHI) database. METHODS: A retrospective epidemiologic study of pregnant women in South Korea from 2013 to 2017 was conducted using the NHI claims database. Using corresponding diagnostic codes, we identified women diagnosed with DQT during pregnancy or the p

Influenza virus: 16 years' experience of clinical epidemiologic patterns and associated infection factors in hospitalized children in Argentina.

BACKGROUND: Influenza is an important cause of acute lower respiratory tract infection (aLRTI), hospitalization, and mortality in children. This study aimed to describe the clinical and epidemiologic patterns and infection factors associated with influenza, and compare case features of influenza A and B. METHODS: In a prospective, cross-sectional study, patients admitted for aLRTI, between 2000 and 2015, were tested for respiratory syncytial virus, adenovirus, influenza, or parainfluenza, and confirmed by fluorescent antibody (FA) or real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assay of nasop

Length at birth and effect of prenatal and postnatal factors on early wheezing phenotypes. Kraków epidemiologic cohort study.

The main goal of the study was to assess the pattern of risk factors having an impact on the onset of early wheezing phenotypes in the birth cohort of 468 two-year-olds. A secondary objective was to investigate a possible association between early persistent wheezing and infant's length at birth. Approximately one third of the children in the study sample experienced wheezing in the first two years of life, and in about two third of cases (67%), the symptom developed within the first year of life. The early wheezing was easily reversible and in about 70% of the affected infants, the symptom re

Associations of epidemiologic risk factors with Fusobacterium nucleatum and bacterial alpha diversity in the colorectal tumor-associated microbiota.

BACKGROUND: Aspects of the gut microbiome, including presence of specific bacterial species and overall community structure, have been linked to the etiology and prognosis of colorectal cancer (CRC). Less is known about the epidemiologic risk factors that are associated with the composition of the microbiota in invasive colorectal tumors. METHODS: Using tumor and paired normal colorectal tissue samples from a subset of participants in the population-based Seattle Colon Cancer Family Registry, we compared the presence of Fusobacterium nucleatum (F. nucleatum) (n = 898) measured via droplet dig

Epidemiologic Trends and Factors Associated With Overall Survival for Patients With Hepatobiliary Neuroendocrine Neoplasms in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) constitute a heterogeneous group of rare tumors that most commonly originate from the gastrointestinal tract and lungs, with a consistently rising global incidence over recent decades. Hepatobiliary neuroendocrine neoplasms (HB-NENs), defined as primary NENs arising in the liver and biliary tract, are exceedingly uncommon, accounting for less than 0.5% of all NENs. Owing to their low incidence, atypical clinical presentations, and the paucity of large-scale datasets, no distinct World Health Organization (WHO) classification criteria have yet been es

Epidemiologic Factors Supporting Triage of Infected Dog Patients Admitted to a Veterinary Hospital Biological Isolation and Containment Unit.

The teaching hospital of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Lisbon hosts a Biological Isolation and Containment Unit (BICU) for the hospitalization of both confirmed and suspected animals of an infectious disease. This study targets the BICU dog population to identify and characterize the most frequent infectious diseases recorded in a 7-year period. Several epidemiologic factors were analyzed for their significance to triage infected cases. During the study period, 534 dogs were admitted, of which 263 (49.3%) had a confirmed infectious disease diagnosis: parvovirosis (49.

Prognostic Factors From an Epidemiologic Evaluation of Fibrous Dysplasia of Bone in a Modern Cohort: The FRANCEDYS Study.

Fibrous dysplasia of bone (FD) is a rare genetic but sporadic bone disease that can be responsible for bone pain, fracture, and bone deformity. The prognosis may be difficult to establish because of the wide spectrum of disease severity. We have analyzed the data from the French National Reference center for FD. We have established a database from standardized medical records. We have made descriptive statistics of the various forms of FD and examined the prognostic factors by multivariable logistic regression analysis, with a parsimonious stepwise method. The primary outcome was a clinically

The seal tuberculosis agent, Mycobacterium pinnipedii, infects domestic cattle in New Zealand: epidemiologic factors and DNA strain typing.

The fur seal (Arctocephalus forsteri), which is abundant in coastal areas of New Zealand, harbors several zoonotic pathogens, including Mycobacterium pinnipedii, a member of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex. We describe the microbiology and epidemiology of seven cases of M. pinnipedii infection in beef cattle (Bos primigenius) in coastal areas of New Zealand in 1991-2011. Epidemiologic factors were analyzed on six case farms and a telephone survey of 55 neighboring farms. A DNA-strain typing, using analysis of variable number tandem repeats and the direct repeats (VNTR/DR) of those isola

Generalizability of the surveillance, epidemiology, and end results registry population: factors relevant to epidemiologic and health care research.

To assess the generalizability of the population included in the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) tumor registries to the overall United States population, we compared the population of the 198 SEER counties to the population of the 2882 non-SEER counties regarding sociodemographic factors, physician availability, and availability of pertinent hospital resources. The population residing within the SEER areas is more affluent, has lower unemployment, and is substantially more urban than the remainder of the U.S. population (p < 0.001 for each). The SEER areas have fewer genera

Risk factors for benign breast disease and their relation with breast cancer risk. Pooled information from epidemiologic studies.

Information from published case-control studies on benign breast disease was pooled using standard statistical methods to obtain single, overall risk estimates. This analysis showed that higher socio-economic status (pooled relative risk, RR = 1.24, 95% confidence interval, CI = 1.13-1.37), later menopause (pooled RR = 1.87, 95%, CI = 1.67-2.11) and late age at first birth (pooled RR = 1.30, 95%, CI = 1.13-1.50) were associated with an increased risk of benign breast disease, whereas an apparent protection was given by greater body mass index (pooled RR = 0.58, 95%, CI = 0.50-0.67) and the use
