Traumatic epiphyseal dislocation related to birth injury is uncommon. The authors report a case of slipped distal femoral epiphysis during a breech presentation in a twin pregnancy birthing process, diagnosed by ultrasonography. This type of separation could be difficult to detect in the newborn on plain radiographs because of the non-ossification of the epiphysis. Therefore, the use of sonography is helpful to make an early and accurate diagnosis in order to avoid malunion and deformities of the affected limb. Through this case report we will see the diagnostic value of high-resolution ultras

BACKGROUND: The modified Dunn procedure has rapidly gained popularity as a treatment for unstable slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE), but limited data exist regarding its safety and efficacy. The purpose of this study was to present results and complications following this procedure in a large multicenter series.
METHODS: We reviewed the outcomes of all patients who had been treated with the modified Dunn procedure by five surgeons from separate tertiary-care institutions. All slipped capital femoral epiphyses were defined as unstable according to the Loder criteria. Patients with less

We present a case of epiphyseal reperfusion in a 12-year-old boy following subcapital realignment of a unstable slipped capital femoral epiphysis. The case demonstrates that even if delayed, anatomical surgical realignment of the femoral head can be successful in preserving or reestablishing blood flow to the femoral epiphysis.

CASE: An 11-year-old female patient underwent bilateral in situ fixation for slipped capital femoral epiphyses using single, cannulated, stainless steel screws. She presented 12 years later with a large osteolytic lesion of the proximal femur, which only involved 1 side. Histological evaluation showed a foreign-body reaction and synovial lining. Infection was ruled out and dynamic hip screw stabilization, and bone grafting were performed. The bone graft healed, and the hardware was removed to prevent a similar reaction. In retrospect, postoperative radiographs at 7 weeks showed subtle osteolys

BACKGROUND: Hip osteoarthritis has been reported in the contralateral hip in patients who had been treated for unilateral slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) during adolescence. Although this might be related to the presence of a mild deformity, the morphologic features of the contralateral hip in unilateral SCFE remains poorly characterized.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: Do measurements of (1) femoral head-neck concavity (α angle and femoral head-neck offset), (2) epiphyseal extension into the metaphysis (epiphyseal extension ratio and epiphyseal angle), and (3) posterior tilt of the epiphysis (e

BACKGROUND: Avascular necrosis (AVN) remains the most dreaded complication of unstable slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) treatment. Newer closed reduction techniques (with perfusion monitoring) have emerged as a technically straightforward means to address residual SCFE deformity while still minimizing the risk of osteonecrosis. However, limited data exists regarding the reliability of intraoperative epiphyseal perfusion monitoring to predict the development of AVN. The purpose of this study was to evaluate its reliability.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed all patients with unstabl

A mixed population of 11 cattle (7 dairy, 4 beef; 9 male, 2 female) were examined because of acute onset of non-weightbearing hind limb lameness. Radiography revealed slipped capital femoral epiphyseal fracture in all cattle, with the exception of one large bull. Ten of the 11 cattle were treated with open reduction and internal fixation, using intramedullary pins. Cattle affected with slipped capital femoral epiphyseal fracture in previous reports typically have been calves that required forced extraction during dystocia. Cattle in this report were in the following 2 age groups in which traum

Recent research has revealed the importance of the femoral epiphyseal tubercle and cupping height in the stability of the physis and its association with capital femoral slippage. To better understand the connection between the pathogenesis of slipped capital femoral epiphysis and obesity, we performed a retrospective analysis of proximal femur and acetabular anatomies using computed tomography (CT) scans in the hips of normal weight and obese pediatric patients. We measured morphologic characteristics of the proximal femur and acetabulum in developing hips of 31 obese adolescent patients and

The author emphasizes the importance of true lateral and multiple-position roentgenograms in providing a more comprehensive demonstration of the pathology, the attainment of reduction and the surgical alterations which are necessary to maintain a congruous reduction. A simple convenient technique for lateral roentgenography of the hip in children is presented. A series of cases with roentgenograms is also presented to demonstrate the value of the lateral roentgenograms. The horizontal lateral roentgenogram simulates the position of the upright human stance, and thus, depicts malocclusion, whic

BACKGROUND: Multiple hereditary exostoses (MHE) affect the distal forearm in 30% to 60% of patients with this condition. Many surgical interventions have been described, but treatment is controversial. We present the radiographic results of low risk, minimally invasive hemiepiphyseal stapling of the distal radius to correct the joint angulation caused by MHE through growth modulation.
METHODS: A retrospective review was performed on 18 forearms affected by MHE that underwent radial hemiepiphyseal stapling with follow-up of ≥2 years. The radial articular angle, carpal slip, ulnar tilt, lunate

To test the traditional classification system of slipped capital femoral epiphysis, we evaluated the presenting symptoms and radiographs of fifty-four patients and reclassified the slipped epiphyses as unstable or stable, rather than acute, chronic, or acute-on-chronic. Slips were considered to be unstable when the patient had such severe pain that weight-bearing was not possible even with crutches. Slips were considered to be stable when the patient could bear weight, with or without crutches. We reviewed the records on fifty-five hips in which the slip would have been classified as acute bec

BACKGROUND: Of the many studies of slipped capital femoral epiphysis, none have specifically addressed Amish children. The Amish reflect a small gene pool relative to the general white North American population. Additional knowledge of the demographics of this disorder in Amish children may provide genetic insights. The purpose of this study was to review the demographics of slipped capital femoral epiphysis in the Amish population.
METHODS: A retrospective review of the cases of twenty-five Amish children with slipped capital femoral epiphysis treated at two institutions was performed. The c

We describe a plasty for stabilization of the slipping Patella. The elimination of the Anti-Bandi-Effect and the simultaneous discision of the distal insertion of the Musculus vastus lateralis and the lateral retinaculum apparatus is of importance. The results 5 months till 5 years after intervention are excellent. By none of the 59 knee joints occurred a reluxation even all 46 patients have taken up their work and their sports. Except 1 all patients are subjectively satisfied. We can recommand this technique for treatment of slipping Patella, if not a deformity outside of the patellofemoral j

The progression of degenerative changes of the hip after slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) largely correlates with the patient's age at the time the deformity occurs and with the degree of the epiphyseal gliding. From the pathogenetic point of view, the altered biomechanical conditions of the hip joint with deformation of the proximal femur may result in an impingement of the femoral neck metaphysis against the anterior acetabular rim. Observations of the "natural course" or after "in situ fixation" of the epiphysis show the development of secondary hip arthritis at an average of 20 yea

INTRODUCTION: The deleterious influence of increased mechanical forces on capital femoral epiphysis development is well established; however, the growth of the physis in the absence of such forces remains unclear. The hips of non-ambulatory cerebral palsy (CP) patients provide a weight-restricted (partial weightbearing) model which can elucidate the influence of decreased mechanical forces on the development of physis morphology, including features related to development of slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE). Here we used 3D image analysis to compare the physis morphology of children wit
