Comparison of intraosseous pentobarbital administration and thoracic compression for euthanasia of anesthetized sparrows (Passer domesticus) and starlings (Sturnus vulgaris).

OBJECTIVE To compare intraosseous pentobarbital treatment (IPT) and thoracic compression (TC) on time to circulatory arrest and an isoelectric electroencephalogram (EEG) in anesthetized passerine birds. ANIMALS 30 wild-caught adult birds (17 house sparrows [Passer domesticus] and 13 European starlings [Sturnus vulgaris]). PROCEDURES Birds were assigned to receive IPT or TC (n = 6/species/group). Birds were anesthetized, and carotid arterial pulses were monitored by Doppler methodology. Five subdermal braided-wire electrodes were used for EEG. Anesthetic depth was adjusted until a continuous EE

Post-mortem changes of prostanoid concentrations in tissues of mice: Impact of fast cervical dislocation and dissection delay.

Prostanoids are potent lipid mediators involved in a wide variety of physiological functions like blood pressure regulation or inflammation as well as cardiovascular and malign diseases. Elucidation of their modes of action is mainly carried out in pre-clinical animal models by quantifying prostanoids in tissues of interest. Unfortunately, prostanoids are prone to post-mortem artifact formation and de novo synthesis can already be caused by external stimuli during the euthanasia of animals like prolonged hypercapnia or ischemia. Therefore, this study investigates the suitability and impact of

The non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug carprofen negatively impacts new bone formation and antibiotic efficacy in a rat model of orthopaedic-device-related infection.

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are widely used for pain management during recovery from orthopaedic surgery. NSAID use is associated with increased risk of bone healing complications but it is currently unknown whether NSAIDs increase the risk of developing an orthopaedic-device-related infection (ODRI) and/or affects its response to antibiotic therapy. The present study aimed to determine if administration of the NSAID carprofen [a preferential cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitor] negatively affected Staphylococcus epidermidis (S. epidermidis) bone infection, or its subsequent

[Euthanasia of cattle: a clinical comparison of T 61 and pentobarbital (Eutha 77)].

The objective of this study was a comparison of pentobarbital and T 61 in the euthanasia of cattle. 397 cattle of different ages and breeds which had to be euthanised in the Clinic for Ruminants were enrolled. Following clinical examination, euthanasia was performed by intravenous injection of either 40 mg pentobarbital per kg body weight (BW) (0.1 ml Eutha 77) or 0.1 ml T 61/kg BW. The intervals between the beginning of injection and the following events were noted: collapse of the animal, cessation of respiration, cessation of cardiac action, disappearance of the palpebral and corneal reflex

A Holistic Decision-Making Tool for Canine Chronic Kidney Disease: Navigating Palliative Care and Euthanasia.

BACKGROUND: Managing end-of-life decisions in canine chronic kidney disease (CKD) remains one of the most significant challenges in veterinary nephrology, requiring a delicate balance between clinical data and ethical considerations. OBJECTIVE: This study introduces a novel decision-making algorithm designed to guide clinicians and owners through the complexities of end-of-life care, focusing on the assessment of Quality of Life (QoL) and disease progression. METHODS: The tool integrates IRIS staging with a multi-parameter QoL checklist, categorizing patients into three distinct clinical pat

Animal experimentation in forensic sciences: How far have we come?

In the third millennium where ethical, ethological and cultural evolution seem to be leading more and more towards an inter-species society, the issue of animal experimentation is a moral dilemma. Speaking from a self-interested human perspective, avoiding all animal testing where human disease and therapy are concerned may be very difficult or even impossible; such testing may not be so easily justifiable when suffering-or killing-of non human animals is inflicted for forensic research. In order to verify how forensic scientists are evolving in this ethical issue, we undertook a systematic re

Renal histomorphology in dogs with pyometra and control dogs, and long term clinical outcome with respect to signs of kidney disease.

BACKGROUND: Age-related changes in renal histomorphology are described, while the presence of glomerulonephritis in dogs with pyometra is controversial in current literature. METHODS: Dogs with pyometra were examined retrospectively for evidence of secondary renal damage and persisting renal disease through two retrospective studies. In Study 1, light microscopic lesions of renal tissue were graded and compared in nineteen dogs with pyometra and thirteen age-matched control bitches. In Study 2, forty-one owners of dogs with pyometra were interviewed approximately 8 years after surgery for evi

Humane Endpoint: Example from a Murine Model of Disseminated Sporotrichosis.

Vertebrate animal models are essential in research; however, efforts need to be made to decrease animal suffering as much as possible. It could be useful to determine humane endpoints that could serve as surrogates for a fatal outcome. We address this issue with respect to infectious diseases. We propose a humane endpoint for studies of Sporothrix brasiliensis infection. BALB/c mice were inoculated subcutaneously in the footpad. To define a humane endpoint, we considered two groups: animals who died during the experiment, and those euthanized at the end of the experiment. The groups were compa

Development of an experimental model of schistosomal myeloradiculopathy.

Schistosomal myeloradiculopathy (SMR) is a severe form of presentation of schistosomiasis in which Schistosoma spp. affect the spinal cord. The aims of the present study were to develop an animal model of SMR caused by S. mansoni, to characterize both sensory and motor abnormalities in the infected animals, and to investigate the relationship of the sensory, motor and histological findings with the progression of the infection over time. Mechanical sensitivity and behavioral tests were performed followed by euthanasia in male Wistar rats divided into six groups of five animals each, on days 5,

Risk factors for early death or euthanasia within 100 days of diagnosis in dogs with meningoencephalitis of unknown origin.

Meningoencephalitis of unknown origin (MUO) in the dog is an inflammatory condition of the central nervous system with variable short- and long-term prognosis. Previous studies have attempted to identify risk factors for early death; however, the findings were inconsistent and prognostication and treatment selection remain difficult for cases of MUO. The aim of this study was to compare the influence of putative prognostic factors on early survival in dogs with MUO. Logistic regression was used to analyse the effect of clinical and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features at diagnosis and typ

Needle Arthroscopy of the Scapulohumeral Joint and Bicipital BURSA in Horses: An Ex Vivo Study.

To evaluate the feasibility of performing needle arthroscopy of the scapulohumeral joint and bicipital bursa in standing horses by using the thoracic limbs of euthanized horses. To that purpose, this experimental study was designed. Ten thoracic limbs, five left and five right from euthanized horses were retained in an upright position to simulate a standing horse. The craniolateral and lateral scapulohumeral arthroscopic portals were used to access the articular structures. A third (caudal) portal was also identified and described. The degree of difficulty in accessing the articular space and

Technical brief: a comparison of two methods of euthanasia on retinal dopamine levels.

PURPOSE: Mice are commonly used in biomedical research, and euthanasia is an important part of mouse husbandry. Approved, humane methods of euthanasia are designed to minimize the potential for pain or discomfort, but may also influence the measurement of experimental variables. METHODS: We compared the effects of two approved methods of mouse euthanasia on the levels of retinal dopamine. We examined the level of retinal dopamine, a commonly studied neuromodulator, following euthanasia by carbon dioxide (CO₂)-induced asphyxiation or by cervical dislocation. RESULTS: We found that the level o

Swine industry stakeholders' perception on the use of water-based foam as an emergency mass depopulation method.

The U.S. pork supply chain is vulnerable to various internal and external threats and in need of prompt, comprehensive response plans. Under urgent circumstances, for example in the case of foreign disease incursions, swine farms will have to perform on-farm animal depopulation to prevent disease spread. Several animal depopulation methods including water-based foam (WBF) have been proposed and are under evaluation for feasibility in the field. However, the psychological/emotional impacts of applying depopulation methods for personnel managing and carrying on the tasks are not currently well u

A Case Report of Uterine Body Constriction Precluding Normal Parturition Leading to Dystocia in a Mare.

A 13-year-old multiparous Quarter Horse mare was presented to the Michigan State University's, Large Animal Emergency service for dystocia. Clinical evaluation revealed a minimally dilated cervix on vaginal examination, with a palpable deceased fetus. Postmortem evaluation following owner-elected humane euthanasia revealed a circumferential, tan, fibrous band at the base of the uterine body that constricted the uterus and was adhered to the left and right ovaries. A routine histologic section of the incarcerating cord attached to the ovary consisted predominately of dense fibrous connective ti

Lingual Squamous Cell Carcinoma in Two Horses.

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is one of the most common malignant neoplasms in horses, but lingual SCC has seldom been reported. On separate occasions, a 12-year-old American Quarter Horse mare and an 18-year-old American Saddlebred stallion were presented to the Auburn University Large Animal Teaching Hospital for evaluation of weight loss, dysphagia, and ptyalism. Evaluation of each horse included physical examination, skull radiographs, oral examination, complete blood count and serum biochemistry profile, endoscopic evaluation of the mouth, and biopsy of tissue from a lesion found on the t
