Diagnostic levels of pulsed ultrasound were applied abdominally over the uteri of pregnant rats for five minutes daily during the first 20 days of gestation. The average energy output of the ultrasound machine at the optimum focal length of the transducer (5.4 cm) was 7.2 mW/sq cm. Postnatal auditory evoked potentials demonstrated a significant alteration in the offspring of the treated animals when compared with similarly treated, but nonexposed controls. This alteration only occurred in the high frequency range. Neither light nor electron microscopy revealed significant morphologic alteratio

In a prospective study of 200 patients with cerebrovascular disease (48 intracerebral hemorrhages, [ICH]; 64 subarachnoid hemorrhages, [SAH]; 48 supratentorial and 40 infratentorial ischemic strokes), we assessed the individual and combined prognostic value of median-nerve somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP) and brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP) within 72 hours of admission. Clinical outcome was graded in three ranked categories according to a modified Glasgow Outcome Scale. Likewise, the initial SEP and BAEP findings were graded in a three-class score. In all groups, the SEP were

Scalp-recorded auditory evoked potentials (AEPs) allow the same non-invasive metrics used in human auditory neuroscience to be applied to non-human primates, yet the basic acoustic response properties of AEPs in the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) remain poorly characterized. We recorded AEPs from two awake marmosets in response to pure tones spanning eight frequencies (125-16,000 Hz) and three intensities (45-75 dB SPL), and quantified response magnitude as the global field power of five AEP components (P1, N1, P2, N2, and the late negativity, LN). AEP magnitude depended strongly on stim

Chiari malformation types 1 and 1.5 can be treated with posterior fossa decompression, though surgical techniques vary considerably, with more aggressive approaches often considered for type 1.5. Given this variability, an objective intraoperative marker of adequate decompression would support more tailored surgery. While brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) have been explored in pediatric populations, their utility in adults remains unstudied. We present a 26-year-old female with Chiari 1.5 and symptoms including migraines, visual disturbances, balance issues, and right-hand clumsines

Objective: The lack of steady-state evoked potential (SSEP) studies on post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has led to undiscovered useful information about the pathophysiology of the disorder. Thus, we explored SSEP patterns in PTSD patients during a stop-signal task to disclose possible impairments in these informative brain potentials. Method : 25 adult patients with PTSD and 25 healthy adults participated in this research. Subjects were assessed with electroencephalography while the tone signal stimuli at 40 Hz were used to evoke SSEPs and subjects performed a stop-signal task. The amplit

OBJECTIVES: Primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) is an autoimmune, multisystem exocrinopathy characterized by dysfunction of the exocrine glands. Central nervous system (CNS) involvement is estimated to be present in 10-60% patients with pSS. The present study aimed to evaluate brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP) in pSS patients without central nervous system involvement, and without otolaryngological abnormalities.
METHOD: Thirty-six pSS patients (35 women, 1 man, mean age 48 years old) and 40 healthy volunteers were investigated. BAEP, brain imaging, laboratory parameters, and clinical

N100 and P300 auditory evoked potentials in 2-stimulus oddball paradigm were analyzed in high (HH, n = 18) and low (LH, n = 15) hypnotizable participants under waking condition. LH subjects committed more errors than HH subjects. HH subjects demonstrated shorter N100 latencies at frontal electrodes and significant N100 differences between target and nontarget stimuli (higher N100 amplitude and increased latency at parietal sites to targets vs. nontargets), whereas LH subjects failed to show any differences. The overall increase of P300 amplitude with frontal-central localization of P300 maximu

OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to define a new protocol for intraoperative monitoring (IOM) of brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) during microvascular decompression (MVD) surgery to treat hemifacial spasm (HFS) and to evaluate the usefulness of this new protocol to prevent hearing impairment. METHODS To define the optimal stimulation rate, estimate the number of trials to be averaged, and identify useful warning criteria in IOM of BAEPs, the authors performed a preliminary study of 13 patients with HFS in 2010. They increased the stimulation rate from 10.1 Hz/sec to 100.1 Hz/sec

Children's obligatory auditory event-related potentials (ERPs) to speech and nonspeech sounds have been shown to associate with reading performance in children at risk or with dyslexia and their controls. However, very little is known of the cognitive processes these responses reflect. To investigate this question, we recorded ERPs to semisynthetic syllables and their acoustically matched nonspeech counterparts in 63 typically developed preschoolers, and assessed their verbal skills with an extensive set of neurocognitive tests. P1 and N2 amplitudes were larger for nonspeech than speech stimul

OBJECTIVE: The mismatch negativity (MMN), an auditory event-related potential, has been identified as a good indicator of recovery of consciousness during coma. We explored the predictive value of the MMN and other auditory-evoked potentials including brainstem and middle-latency potentials for predicting awakening in comatose patients after cardiac arrest or cardiogenic shock.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Auditory brainstem, middle-latency (Pa wave), and event-related potentials (N100 and MMN waves) were recorded in 17 comatose patients and 9 surgical patients matched by age and coronary artery di

In this study, 30 young men and 30 young women (with the same proportion of anxious persons in each group) were submitted, in random order, to: i) a road traffic noise of 75 dBA for 15 min; ii) this same noise for 15 min, having ingested 0.25 mg of alprazolam (Xanax*) 1 h before; iii) uniquely 0.25 mg of alprazolam. The auditory brainstem evoked potentials (ABEP) were taken before and after exposure to noise (for the non-noise case, we respected the same time schedule). The alprazolam had an effect on the cochlea and can be considered as a noise adaptation factor on the auditory pathways explo

Brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) were recorded in 89 premature infants aged between 34 and 52 weeks. 47.2% had normal and 52.8% abnormal BAEPs in at least one ear. Seven risk factors were taken into account: birth weight lower than 1500 g, hypoxia, neurological damage, fetal pathology, associated malformation, the use of ototoxic drugs, and exchange transfusion. The type of BAEP impairment was defined as either endocochlear, transmission or retrocochlear damage. Percentage BAEP impairment was higher in case of hypoxia (63.3%) but remained similar whether the other risk factors were

Brainstem auditory evoked potentials were recorded in a 3-year-old girl with the central alveolar hypoventilation syndrome (Ondine's syndrome). Abnormal findings were seen at the level of the mid to upper brain stem (wave III), which was not reproducibly recordable on the left side. This electrophysiologic abnormality is consistent with a previous finding in a patient with sleep apnea.

Auditory brainstem evoked potentials (ABEP) were recorded from 50 newborns (35-43 weeks gestational age), using three orthogonal differential electrode pairs, in addition to the widely used vertex-mastoid derivation. Potentials were evoked by alternating polarity, 75 dBnHL clicks presented monaurally at a rate of 10/s. From the records of the three orthogonal electrode pairs (nasion-inion; vertex-spinous cervical process VII; left-right mastoids), Three-channel Lissajous' trajectories (3CLT) were derived and analyzed. 3CLT point-by-point, as well as segmental descriptors were compared with pea

Early somatosensory (ESEP) and auditory (EAEP) evoked potentials were recorded in 27 patients with severe coma (Glasgow score less than 5) following cardiorespiratory arrest, within the first 7 days of its course. Somatosensory responses were elicited by stimulation of the median nerve. ESEP were abolished in 17 patients due to a parietal thalamo-cortical lesion. Among these, 6 patients died within one month and 11 presented with a persistent vegetative state. In all patients EAEP were obtained, showing functional brainstem activity. Low-voltage EAEP, especially for peak V (inferior colliculus

We related intracranial auditory brain-stem evoked potentials (BAEPs) to the surface BAEP using a model of focal brain-stem ischaemia. In 17 baboons anaesthetised with alpha-chloralose, BAEPs were recorded bilaterally at the mastoids and in the caudal lateral lemniscus (LL) and inferior colliculus (IC), in response to monaural click stimulation. Electrodes at these sites were each connected to the positive input of a differential amplifier, and one other electrode, placed at the vertex, was connected to all the negative inputs. Measurements of local cerebral blood flow (CBF) by hydrogen cleara

Conductive hearing loss in children is most commonly associated with Secretory otitis media (S.O.M.). Since auditory brainstem evoked potentials (ABEP) reflect conductive damage in prolonged peak latencies, the present study evaluated the efficacy of surgery for ventilating the middle ear, by comparing changes in peak latencies. These changes were compared in 4 groups of children (4-12 years old): children with S.O.M. in the past, who recovered as a result of conservative treatment; children with S.O.M. in the past, who had been operated on with insertion of ventilation tubes (V.T.); children

In order to study the effects of various degrees of cerebral ischemia on the auditory nerve-brain stem evoked potentials (BAEP), the cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP), defined as the difference between mean arterial blood pressure (MAP) and intracranial pressure (ICP), was systemically manipulated in anesthetized, paralyzed and ventilated cats. The CPP was varied by decreasing MAP, either by hemorrhage or by the infusion of a vasodilating drug, and elevating ICP by infusion of mock CSF into the cisterna magna, or by MAP depression and ICP elevation simultaneously. Even though the lower limit o

Potentials of the 10-15 ms latency range evoked by acoustic clicks and Gauss-shaped tone bursts habe been investigated in normal hearing adults, 20 patients with cochlear damages, and 6 cases of temporal lobe processes. Methods and results are compared to those of brain stem audiometry. Mean and standard latency ranges are calculated for the different peaks (Fig. 1). Amplitudes should be used only for side difference evaluation in the same patient, because of their big interindividual variation. In cases of profound high frequency hearing loss (Fig. 2) medium-latency potentials yield true thre
