Anorexia nervosa is the most deadly mental disorder. Early detection is crucial. Most patients engage in compulsive exercise, often in an early stage. Compulsive exercise has a deleterious impact on the course of the disease. It can manifest in extreme forms with rigid rules and an inevitable urge. Three different subtypes exist: intensive sports, increased movement in everyday life, and motor restlessness. Besides the underlining motives, neurobiological mechanisms play a role. Moreover, cold ambient temperature increases compulsive exercise, while many patients intentionally expose themselve

This article reports the long-term follow-up evaluation (mean, 10 years) findings of 50 patients with upper-extremity peripheral nerve injuries. The most common persistent symptom was cold sensitivity (n = 38), and 33 of 38 patients rated its intensity as moderate or severe. Cold sensitivity typically developed within months after initial injury and resolved in only 2 patients. No significant difference in the incidence of cold sensitivity was found between patients with subjectively normal hand sensation (7 of 11) and those who reported abnormal hand sensibility (31 of 37). A cold sensitivity

The terminology of the acro-ischaemic states of the upper limb is muddled. It would be desirable for a strict definition of Raynaud's "phenomenon", "syndrome" and "disease" to be established and accepted by all angiologists. In the author's view, Raynaud's phenomenon is an intermittent circulatory crisis, leaving after it a normal finger. When set off by a detectable organic lesion, the phenomenon then belongs to the category of Raynaud's syndrome. When there is no organic lesion to explain it, it becomes a symptom of Raynaud's disease.

Subjects that repeatedly have to expose the extremities to cold may benefit from a high peripheral temperature to maintain dexterity and tissue integrity. Therefore, we investigated if repeated immersions of a hand and a foot in cold water resulted in increased skin temperatures. Nine male and seven female subjects (mean 20.4; SD 2.2 years) immersed their right (trained) hand and foot simultaneously in 8°C water, 30 min daily for 15 days. During the pre and post-test (days 1 and 15, respectively) the left (untrained) hand and foot were immersed as well. Pain, tactile sensitivity and skin tempe

A rabbit ear model of the human digit was utilized to determine the vascular response to peripheral sympathectomy. Vascular responses were evaluated by subjecting chronically instrumented rabbits to a cold stress before and after sympathectomy surgery. The typical response to cold stress is for ear temperatures and auricular cutaneous perfusion to decrease during the cooling phase of the test and to increase toward baseline levels during the rewarming phase after cold exposure. Following peripheral sympathectomy, ear temperatures were significantly increased during both the cooling and rewarmi

Hazardous thermal conditions resulting from climate change may play a role in cardiovascular disease development. We chose the Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI) as the exposure metric to evaluate the relationship between thermal conditions and cardiovascular mortality in Shenzhen, China. We applied quasi-Poisson regression non-linear distributed lag models to evaluate the exposure-response associations. The findings suggest that cardiovascular mortality risks were significantly increased under heat and cold stress, and the adverse effects of cold stress were stronger than heat stress. Ref

BACKGROUND: Exposures to extreme ambient temperature and air pollution are linked to adverse birth outcomes, but the associations with small for gestational age (SGA) and term low birthweight (tLBW) are unclear. We aimed to investigate exposures to site-specific temperature extremes and selected criteria air pollutants in relation to SGA and tLBW.
METHODS: We linked medical records of 220,572 singleton births (2002-2008) from 12 US sites to local temperature estimated by the Weather Research and Forecasting model, and air pollution estimated by modified Community Multiscale Air Quality models

BACKGROUND: Ambient temperatures exceeding 40 °C are projected to become common in many temperate climatic zones due to global warming. Therefore, understanding the health effects of continuous exposure to high ambient temperatures on populations living in hot climatic regions can help identify the limits of human tolerance.
OBJECTIVE: We studied the relationship between ambient temperature and non-accidental mortality in the hot desert city of Mecca, Saudi Arabia, between 2006 and 2015.
METHODS: We used a distributed lag nonlinear model to estimate the mortality-temperature association over

BACKGROUND: Global climate change has increased the frequency, intensity, and duration of extreme temperature events, while population aging poses unprecedented public health challenges. However, the association between extreme temperature events and longitudinal trajectories of intrinsic capacity (IC)-a multidimensional construct proposed by the World Health Organization as a core indicator of healthy aging-remains unknown.
METHODS: Data were drawn from 1,393 participants aged 45-80 years who had complete IC assessments across three waves (2011, 2013, 2015) of the China Health and Retirement

Myxedema coma, a rare but fatal emergency, is an extreme expression of hypothyroidism. We describe a 51-year-old male patient who has discontinued hypothyroidism treatment 10 months earlier and developed lethargy, edema, and cold intolerance symptoms. He also had a previous diagnosis of neurofibromatosis. After admission, he progressed to respiratory insufficiency and coma. The prompt recognition of the condition, thyroid hormone replacement, and management of the complications (hypoventilation, cardiogenic shock associated with swinging heart, adrenal and renal insufficiency and sepsis), resu

Special Operation Soldiers must be prepared to work in all environmental extremes, frequently with little or no preparation time. While working in extreme heat or cold is uncomfortable, little preparation is necessary as long as reasonably fit Soldiers remain properly nourished, hydrated, or clothed. Working at high altitude poses additional risks that can be pharmacologically mitigated. While new prophylactic therapies are appearing on the scene in mountaineering and high-altitude climbing circles, acetazolamide still appears to be the preferred drug for the prevention of altitude related ill

Publications on ambient temperature-related mortality among Arctic or subarctic populations are extremely rare. While circumpolar areas cover large portions of several European countries, Canada, and the USA, the population of these territories is relatively small, and the data needed for statistical analysis of the health impacts of extreme temperature events are frequently insufficient. This study utilizes standard time series regression techniques to estimate relative increases in cause- and age-specific daily mortality rates during heat waves and cold spells in four Russian cities with a s

People experiencing unsheltered homelessness (PEUH) are disproportionately vulnerable to extreme temperatures. This study measured overnight exposure to hot and cold temperatures inside tents occupied by PEUH in Knoxville, Tennessee, and examined participants’ coping strategies through semi-structured interviews (n = 20). In winter, many participants successfully warmed their tents by 10 °C or more, by burning materials and using layers of blankets and tarps. Winter warmth required an abundance of resources, making moving to shelters infeasible, as it meant abandoning these hard-won supplies.

High-altitude environments impose intense stresses on living organisms and drive striking phenotypic and genetic adaptations, such as hypoxia resistance, cold tolerance, and increases in metabolic capacity and body mass. As one of the most successful and dominant mammals on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (QHTP), the plateau pika (Ochotona curzoniae) has adapted to the extreme environments of the highest altitudes of this region and exhibits tolerance to cold and hypoxia, in contrast to closely related species that inhabit the peripheral alpine bush or forests. To explore the potential genetic mec

We propose a new bioheat model for thermoregulation in the human body in response to cold environments, with emphasis on hypothermia and frostbite in exposed extremities. The model couples the bioheat transfer equation in the extremity with a differential equation that describes the core temperature. We used simulations to illustrate the connection between microscale vascular exchange and the effective perfusion term in the bioheat transfer equation. The nonlinear coupling proposed here incorporates physiologically motivated feedback laws for local and reflex vasoconstriction, as well as heat

Frequent extreme high-temperature events have severely restricted the development of the cold-water rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) aquaculture industry, yet the systemic tolerance mechanisms behind the selection of heat-tolerant strains remain elusive. In this study, a 28-day thermal stress challenge (14-28 °C) was performed on common rainbow trout (N trout) and family-selected heat-tolerant rainbow trout (T trout, F2 generation). Integrated biochemical, histopathological, and transcriptomic-metabolomic analyses were conducted. The results indicated that T trout effectively delayed the co

Body size is a critical trait shaping ectotherm thermal tolerance, yet how body size mediates thermal acclimation remains poorly understood in insects. Here, we conducted 15-day daily cold (9 °C, 2.5 h) and heat (30 °C, 2.5 h) acclimation treatments on large, medium, and small Solenopsis invicta workers, followed by extreme temperature survival assays and comparative RNA-seq transcriptome profiling to uncover size-dependent acclimation phenotypes and molecular regulatory pathways. Survival results revealed that both cold and heat acclimation significantly boosted extreme thermal resistance of
