IdentiARAT: Toward Automated Identification of Individual ARAT Items from Wearable Sensors.

This study explores the potential of using wrist-worn inertial sensors to automate the labeling of ARAT (Action Research Arm Test) items. While the ARAT is commonly used to assess upper limb motor function, its limitations include subjectivity and time consumption of clinical staff. By using IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) sensors and MiniROCKET as a time series classification technique, this investigation aims to classify ARAT items based on sensor recordings. We test common preprocessing strategies to efficiently leverage included information in the data. Afterward, we use the best preproces

Fast occupational upper-limb radiation dose prediction using machine learning and Monte Carlo simulation.

Interventional procedures expose physicians to scattered radiation, particularly to their upper extremities, posing occupational health risks. Existing extremity dosimeters such as thermoluminescents, optically stimulated luminescence rings and active personal dosimeters provide limited spatial information, exhibit angular and energy dependence and offer little or no real-time feedback. This study develops machine learning (ML) models to estimate radiation dose values at discrete upper-limb locations using Monte Carlo (MC)-derived data and procedure-specific parameters. A dataset of 10 000 MC

Heart patient health monitoring system using invasive and non-invasive measurement.

The abnormal heart conduction, known as arrhythmia, can contribute to cardiac diseases that carry the risk of fatal consequences. Healthcare professionals typically use electrocardiogram (ECG) signals and certain preliminary tests to identify abnormal patterns in a patient's cardiac activity. To assess the overall cardiac health condition, cardiac specialists monitor these activities separately. This procedure may be arduous and time-intensive, potentially impacting the patient's well-being. This study automates and introduces a novel solution for predicting the cardiac health conditions, spec

Explainable machine learning model to predict refeeding hypophosphatemia.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Refeeding syndrome (RFS) is a disease that occurs when feeding is restarted and metabolism changes from catabolic to anabolic status. RFS can manifest variously, ranging from asymptomatic to fatal, therefore it may easily be overlooked. RFS prediction using explainable machine learning can improve diagnosis and treatment. Our study aimed to propose a machine learning model for RFS prediction, specifically refeeding hypophosphatemia, to evaluate its performance compared with conventional regression models, and to explain the machine learning classification through Shapley add

Benchmarking Ensemble Models to Predict Prolonged Hospital Stay in Traumatic Brain Injury: A Single-Institution Study.

INTRODUCTION: Prolonged length of stay (PLOS) in hospitals is a critical metric representing quality and efficiency of care, especially for patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI). Machine learning offers the potential to predict PLOS, although class imbalance, limited sample size, or lack of generalizability impact their real-world application. This study benchmarks machine learning models from prior studies and explores ensemble models to predict PLOS in TBI patients and address domain adaptation concerns in surgical settings. METHODS: An anonymized dataset of 263 adult TBI patients admi
