PURPOSE: This study aims to determine the incidence of fungal-culture-positive corneoscleral donor rim in patients undergoing keratoplasty and evaluate clinical outcomes of eyes that received these contaminated donor tissues.

The problems associated with performing penetrating keratoplasty in private practice are briefly discussed: access to an eye bank, high-risk patients, immunosuppressive therapy, complications, and results. One negative aspect is the relatively high incidence (10%) of primary graft failure, but allograft reactions are less frequent (5%). The best results are obtained in keratoconus cases.

Four hundred (400) students studying first year Medicine, Dentistry, Laboratory Technology, Pharmacy, Biomedicine and Bioengineering degree courses in the University of Malaya were assessed on their awareness and knowledge on eye donation using an open ended questionnaire. To test the hypothesis that the premotor cortex in and behind the caudal bank of the arcuate sulcus can generate saccades, we stimulated electrically the periarcuate region of alert rhesus monkeys. We were able to produce saccades from sites of the premotor cortex that were contiguous with the frontal eye fields and extended up to 2 mm behind the smooth pursuit area. However, premotor sites often elicited saccades with ipsiversive characteristic vectors, lower peak velocities, and flatter velocity profiles when compared to saccades evoked from the frontal eye field.

PURPOSE: To determine whether a polymerizing liquid hydrogel ocular bandage can create a watertight seal in a clear corneal cataract incision.
SETTING: Laboratory.
METHODS: Twenty-four clear corneal cataract wounds were made in eye-bank corneas. Twelve wounds were treated with a tissue-adherent hydrogel ocular bandage; 12 control wounds received no bandage. Each eye was tested under low-pressure conditions to detect fluid ingress of India ink on the eye's surface.
