The increasing incidence of Candida albicans infections, especially those involving drug-resistant strains, highlights the need for new antifungal agents. In this study, 108 plant extracts from native and endemic species of the Brazilian Cerrado were screened against C. albicans in both planktonic and biofilm forms (developing and mature). Eighteen extracts demonstrated significant antifungal and antibiofilm activity, particularly from species in the Fabaceae, Myrtaceae, and Celastraceae families. Extracts from Hymenaea stigonocarpa notably inhibited the yeast-to-hyphae transition, a key virul…

Advances in understanding the evolutionary ecology of the rhizobia-legume mutualism have been constrained by methodological limitations in efficiently measuring relative strain frequencies alongside measurements of absolute population sizes of rhizobia living in nodules. To examine strain competition in natural and agricultural ecosystems that harbor multiple strains of rhizobia, an increasing number of manipulative and observational studies have recently begun to examine dozens or hundreds of strains simultaneously. Assessing the competitive fitness of multiple strains in legume nodules requi

The growing demand for sustainable protein sources has accelerated the integration of legume proteins into plant-based foods; however, their widespread acceptance remains limited by undesirable off-flavors, which are characteristically described as beany, grassy, earthy, bitter, and astringent. These sensory defects result from complex interactions among intrinsic seed composition, enzymatic and non-enzymatic reactions, processing conditions, and flavor perception influenced by the food matrix. This review offers a comprehensive overview of the molecular origins, processing-induced transformat

The morphological structure of the tongue and papillae that occur on it vary according to an animal's lifestyle, nutrition, and adaptation to various environmental conditions. This study aimed to reveal in detail the morphological, histological, and electron microscopic structure of the tongue of roe deer (Capreolus capreolus Linnaeus, 1758). In this study, nine roe tongues were used. The tongue consists of three parts: the apex, body, and root. When the dorsal surface of the tongue was examined in detail, five different papillae were observed: filiform, lenticular, conical, fungiform, and val

Ultraviolet/persulfate (UV/PS) and Ultraviolet/hydrogen peroxide (UV/H2O2) have attracted much attention in recent years as advanced oxidation processes for water treatment. However, it is not all clear how these two methods affect the formation of cyanogen chloride (CNCl) in the subsequent water chlorination process. In this study, it was found that both UV/H2O2 and UV/PS pre-oxidation promoted the formation of CNCl in six actual water samples collected from urban rivers. Glycine, uric acid, arginine and histidine were investigated as the model compounds to explore the effects of different me

Leucaena leucocephala is a worldwide plant used as forage; however, its use in animal production has been limited because of the presence of a toxic nonprotein amino acid, L-mimosine. L-mimosine exhibits negative effects not only in ruminants but also in monogastric animals; however, there is little information available on the effect of this amino acid in monogastric species. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the general toxicity of L-mimosine in rats, as well as its effects on the endocrine and reproductive systems. L-mimosine was extracted from seeds of L. leucocephala that were administer

The legume species Astragalus sinicus (Chinese milk vetch [CMV]) has been widely cultivated for centuries in southern China as one of the most important green manures/cover crops for improving rice productivity and preventing soil degeneration. In this study, we generated the first chromosome-scale reference genome of CMV by combining PacBio and Illumina sequencing with high-throughput chromatin conformation capture (Hi-C) technology. The CMV genome was 595.52 Mb in length, with a contig N50 size of 1.50 Mb. Long terminal repeats (LTRs) had been amplified and contributed to genome size expansi

Fractions of an ultrafiltered Cyclopia genistoides extract, respectively enriched in xanthones and benzophenones, were previously shown to inhibit mammalian α-glucosidase in vitro. The present study investigated ex vivo intestinal transport of these fractions, using excised porcine jejunal tissue, to determine whether the gut could be a predominant in vivo site of action. The major bioactive compounds, the xanthones (mangiferin, isomangiferin) and benzophenones (3-β-D-glucopyranosyliriflophenone, 3-β-D-glucopyranosyl-4-O-β-D-glucopyranosyliriflophenone) exhibited poor permeation in the absorpt

BACKGROUND: Arboviroses such as dengue, Zika and chikungunya represent a serious public health issue as a consequence of the absence of approved vaccines or specific antiviral drugs against the arboviruses that cause them. One way to prevent these diseases is by combating the vector mosquito, Aedes aegypti (Diptera), which has serine proteases in the midgut. Protease inhibitors are molecules that can block enzyme activity, impairing digestion and nutrition, which can lead to death. Thus, we purified and characterized a novel chymotrypsin-trypsin inhibitor (LsCTI) from Lonchocarpus sericeus see

BACKGROUND: Polygalacturonase-inhibiting proteins (PGIPs) are leucine-rich repeat (LRR) plant cell wall glycoproteins involved in plant immunity. They are typically encoded by gene families with a small number of gene copies whose evolutionary origin has been poorly investigated. Here we report the complete characterization of the full complement of the pgip family in soybean (Glycine max [L.] Merr.) and the characterization of the genomic region surrounding the pgip family in four legume species.
RESULTS: BAC clone and genome sequence analyses showed that the soybean genome contains two pgip

PREMISE OF THE STUDY: In angiosperm seeds, the developing embryo acquires nutrients via a suspensor that typically undergoes programmed cell death (PCD) at the early cotyledon stage. However, in Leguminosae (the third largest angiosperm family), the suspensors can disappear at the heart-shaped stage (i.e., prior to the cotyledon stage) or still persist at the cotyledon stage. Here, in a comprehensive survey of legume suspensors and embryos, the variation and the evolutionary direction of timing of suspensor PCD in Leguminosae were characterized, and systematic implications were evaluated.
