Over a period of one year 20 549 new patients attended an accident and emergency department. Of these patients, 15 555 were victims of accidents, including 875 who had sustained facial injuries. This latter group comprised 609 patients with soft tissue trauma and 266 with skeletal injury. The frequency, aetiology, age and sex distribution of the facial injuries were analysed and compared with other published statistical surveys of facial injury. It is concluded that facial injuries constitute a significant proportion of the work of a civilian accident unit and that any accident service must ha…

Background/Objectives: The present investigation was designed and conducted with the aim to evaluate the statistical significance of the Comprehensive Facial Injury (CFI) score in relation to total surgical time (ST), length of hospital stay (LOS), and the presence of head injury in patients with fractures of the maxillofacial skeleton. Methods: The study includes 332 patients with maxillofacial fractures, a subset of whom also had associated head injuries. The CFI score was calculated for each patient. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov test was applied to assess the distribution of score values within t

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the facial nerve contralateral innervation of patients with facial nerve injury.
METHODS: Electroneuronography (ENoG) of 22 university student volunteers (US) without any injury and systemic diseases and 108 patients with facial nerve injury were measured. The patients were divided into three groups: iatrogenic, traumatic, and Bell's palsy groups. When stimulating the facial nerve at the site below the lobule and behind the ramus, ENoGs of each branch of the facial nerve on ipsilateral and contralateral sides were recorded. A total of 76 branch I, 81 branch II, 88 br

A study was made of the effects of facial nerve transection on trigeminal stimulation- evoked field potentials in the principal trigeminal (Pr5) and facial nuclei (7) in rats. Although the transected branch of the facial nerve contains pure motoric efferents, it resulted in enhanced responses in both Pr5 and 7. These electrophysiological results suggest a functional circuitry involving the whiskers, trigeminal nerve, Pr5 and 7 and the facial nerve as efferent. The disconnection (opening) of this loop results in enhanced responsiveness of the neurons in both Pr5 and 7.

INTRODUCTION: Soft tissue injuries comprise the majority of pediatric facial traumas, yet large-scale epidemiologic studies remain scarce. We present the first national-level analysis of pediatric facial soft tissue injuries in the United States.
METHODS: A retrospective study of the ACS TQIP (American College of Surgeons Trauma Quality Improvement Project) database from 2017 to 2022 examined 123,558 patients aged 0 to 18 years with facial soft tissue injuries. Patterns before and during COVID-19 were assessed using multivariable regression models.
RESULTS: The most prevalent injuries were l

This report examines the successful recovery of a feline that presented with multiple complex fractures and dislocations involving the facial and cranial structures resulting from a traffic accident. Diagnostic CT imaging identified significant injuries, including luxation of the left temporomandibular joint (TMJ), a mandibular symphyseal fracture, a hard palate fracture, and a left orbital fracture accompanied by severe exudate within the nasal cavity, compressing the left orbit and nasal passages. Importantly, no additional injuries were detected in the thoracic or abdominal regions, facilit

BACKGROUND: Head trauma is responsible for significant morbidity and mortality in the pediatric trauma population. There are validated guidelines which indicate the necessity for computed tomography of the head (CTH), but the indication for a dedicated CT of the facial bones (CTF) is less clear. We sought to identify our population of head trauma patients who would clinically benefit from the addition of CTF.
METHODS: Using the electronic medical record, pediatric trauma patients who underwent CTH and/or CTF from 2016 to 2021 were identified. We collected information on demographics, traumati

INTRODUCTION: High-velocity and high-impact forces can yield life-threatening injuries that are not only limited to the face but can involve other regions of the body. Associated injuries are more frequent in the elderly impacting management and outcomes. The primary objective was to study the association between associated injuries and age groups by identifying epidemiological trends and differences among the elderly and younger population.
METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted from January 2012 to January 2017 at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, Adelaide. A comparative analysis for elde

Bicyclists are vulnerable road users. The authors aimed to characterise facial fractures and their association with head and neck injuries in bicyclists admitted to a Scandinavian Level 1 trauma center with a catchment area of ~3 million inhabitants. Data from bicycle-related injuries in the period 2005 to 2016 were extracted from the Oslo University Hospital trauma registry. Variables included were age; sex; date of injury; abbreviated injury scale (AIS) codes for facial skeletal, head and neck injuries; and surgical procedure codes for treatment of facial fractures. Anatomical injury was cla

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate concomitant injuries and complications in patients with panfacial fracture (PF) according to patterns of PF.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: PF is defined as fractures involving at least three of the four facial parts (frontal, upper midface, lower midface, and mandible). The data for this study were retrospectively analysed. A simple regression analysis, Cramer's V analysis, and Pearson's correlation analysis were used for verifying significance and correlation between the investigated factors and patterns of PF. Short-term postoperative surgical

In cases of suspected neonaticide, the results of a forensic autopsy might be important for conviction or acquittal. But autopsy findings in dead newborns are often unspecific and can rarely provide corroborative evidence of inflicted injury, as they are known to occur during normal birth as well. In our study, we examined 59 vaginally delivered, healthy newborns within the first 30 min after birth to know more about the prevalence and possible correlations of a caput succedaneum and facial petechiae. Caput succedaneum occurred in 33.9%, facial petechiae in 20.3%. As for the occurrence of capu
