Deficits of facial emotion recognition and visual information processing in adult patients with classical galactosemia.

BACKGROUND: Classical galactosemia (CG) is due to a severe deficiency of the galactose-1-phosphate uridyl-transferase (GALT), the main enzyme of galactose metabolism. Even early introduction of galactose-restricted diet fails to prevent long-term complications, including cognitive impairment, neurological and psychiatric problems, osteoporosis, premature ovarian failure and infertility. Detailed neuropsychological phenotyping is needed in order to better understand the relevant neurodevelopmental deficiencies and to develop effective treatment strategies. AIM: To define specifically and signi

The effect of comorbid depression on facial and prosody emotion recognition in first-episode schizophrenia spectrum.

BACKGROUND: Comorbid depression is common in first-episode schizophrenia spectrum (FES) disorders. Both depression and FES are associated with significant deficits in facial and prosody emotion recognition performance. However, it remains unclear whether people with FES and comorbid depression, compared to those without comorbid depression, have overall poorer emotion recognition, or instead, a different pattern of emotion recognition deficits. The aim of this study was to compare facial and prosody emotion recognition performance between those with and without comorbid depression in FES. MET

Relationships among 5-HTT genotype, life events and gender in the recognition of facial emotions.

Accumulating evidence has shown that a polymorphism in the promoter region of the serotonin-transporter (5-HTTLPR) modulates neural activation during the perceptual processing of emotional facial expressions. Furthermore, behavioral research has shown that attentional bias for negative information is increased in s allele carriers. We examined the interactions among 5-HTTLPR (including SNP rs25531), life events and gender on the detection of facial emotions. We found a main effect of genotype, as well as moderating effects of childhood emotional abuse (CEA) and recent life events (RLE). S homo

Hemispheric asymmetry in the recognition of emotional attitude conveyed by facial expression, prosody and propositional speech.

In this study 27 patients with right hemisphere lesions, 25 patients with left hemisphere lesions and 26 normal control subjects were investigated for unimodal and simultaneous multimodal recognition of emotional attitude. All subjects were shown 330 videotaped items of 4 seconds duration, each of which was to be judged in terms of facial expression, emotional prosody and the emotional meaning of the underlying spoken sentence. In a preceding experiment comparable unimodal emotional stimuli were applied. The results suggest (a) right hemisphere superiority for recognition of emotions conveyed

From Social to Symbolic: Investigating the Neural Networks Involved in Emoji and Facial Expression Recognition.

Facial expressions and emojis serve as fundamental social cues, yet their neural processing remains distinct. Using swLORETA source reconstruction based on EEG/ERP signals at N170 stage, we analyzed participant-specific brain activations in 50 young, healthy individuals performing an emotion recognition task with real faces and emojis. Behavioral results revealed higher accuracy and faster reaction times for emojis compared to faces consistent with prior electrophysiological findings on P300 amplitude effects. Both stimulus types activated bilateral fusiform areas (BA19/37) and the orbitofront

Computer-based facial recognition as an assisting diagnostic tool to identify children with Noonan syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Noonan syndrome (NS) is a rare genetic disease, and patients who suffer from it exhibit a facial morphology that is characterized by a high forehead, hypertelorism, ptosis, inner epicanthal folds, down-slanting palpebral fissures, a highly arched palate, a round nasal tip, and posteriorly rotated ears. Facial analysis technology has recently been applied to identify many genetic syndromes (GSs). However, few studies have investigated the identification of NS based on the facial features of the subjects. OBJECTIVES: This study develops advanced models to enhance the accuracy of dia

Impact of Bell's palsy in facial emotion recognition: a prospective observational study of 60 patients.

PURPOSE: Patients with Bell's palsy suffer from functional deficits and cannot convey their emotions through the face as well as they used to. According to embodied cognition, automatic mimicry and facial feedback modulate emotion perception. The aim of our study was to determine the impact of Bell's palsy on facial emotion perception. Facial motor skills, the use of botulinum toxin injections, and anxiety were studied. METHODS: 60 patients completed Emotest-VA, an assessment tool of facial emotion perception, facial motor assessment and affective questionnaires. Facial perception scores of p

Variation in self and familiar facial recognition in bipolar disorder patients at different clinical stages.

Previous studies suggest a close relationship between self-disorders and schizophrenia or unipolar depression. However, few studies have explored the characteristics of self-processing in bipolar disorder (BD) during different clinical states. This study compared the differences in self-face recognition (SFR) among patients with bipolar mania (BPM), bipolar depression (BPD), bipolar remission (RM), and healthy controls (HC). Images of subject's own face, a familiar face, and an unfamiliar face were combined in pairs at a certain proportion to obtain three types of blended images. We then compa

Emotion recognition of morphed facial expressions in presymptomatic and symptomatic frontotemporal dementia, and Alzheimer's dementia.

BACKGROUND: The emotion recognition task (ERT) was developed to overcome shortcomings of static emotion recognition paradigms, by identifying more subtle deficits in emotion recognition across different intensity levels. In this study, we used the ERT to investigate emotion recognition deficits across the frontotemporal (FTD) and Alzheimer's Dementia (AD) spectrum. METHODS: With the ERT, we assessed the recognition of facial emotional expressions (anger-disgust-fear-happiness-sadness-surprise) across four intensities (40-60-80-100%) in patients with behavioural variant FTD (bvFTD; n = 32), an

The contribution of facial dynamics to subtle expression recognition in typical viewers and developmental visual agnosia.

Facial expressions are inherently dynamic cues that develop and change over time, unfolding their affective signal. Although facial dynamics are assumed important for emotion recognition, testing often involves intense and stereotypical expressions and little is known about the role of temporal information in the recognition of subtle, non-stereotypical expressions. In Experiment 1 we demonstrate that facial dynamics are critical for recognizing subtle and non-stereotypical facial expressions, but not for recognizing intense and stereotypical displays of emotion. In Experiment 2 we further exa

In the face of threat: neural and endocrine correlates of impaired facial emotion recognition in cocaine dependence.

The ability to recognize facial expressions of emotion in others is a cornerstone of human interaction. Selective impairments in the recognition of facial expressions of fear have frequently been reported in chronic cocaine users, but the nature of these impairments remains poorly understood. We used the multivariate method of partial least squares and structural magnetic resonance imaging to identify gray matter brain networks that underlie facial affect processing in both cocaine-dependent (n = 29) and healthy male volunteers (n = 29). We hypothesized that disruptions in neuroendocrine funct

Recognition of facial expressions and prosodic cues with graded emotional intensities in adults with Asperger syndrome.

This study investigated the ability of adults with Asperger syndrome to recognize emotional categories of facial expressions and emotional prosodies with graded emotional intensities. The individuals with Asperger syndrome showed poorer recognition performance for angry and sad expressions from both facial and vocal information. The group difference in facial expression recognition was prominent for stimuli with low or intermediate emotional intensities. In contrast to this, the individuals with Asperger syndrome exhibited lower recognition accuracy than typically-developed controls mainly for

Hostility and facial affect recognition: effects of a cold pressor stressor on accuracy and cardiovascular reactivity.

The effects of hostility and a cold pressor stressor on the accuracy of facial affect perception were examined in the present experiment. A mechanism whereby physiological arousal level is mediated by systems which also mediate accuracy of an individual's interpretation of affective cues is described. Right-handed participants were classified as high hostile (N = 28) or low hostile (N = 28) using the Cook Medley Hostility Scale. The high-hostile group met joint selection criteria. Only high-hostile participants who showed cardiovascular reactivity to the cold pressor, with systolic BP change e

A comparison of the effects of a beta-adrenergic blocker and a benzodiazepine upon the recognition of human facial expressions.

RATIONALE: Accumulating evidence from neuropsychological and neuroimaging research suggests that facial expressions are processed by at least partially separable neurocognitive systems. Recent evidence implies that the processing of different facial expressions may also be dissociable pharmacologically by GABAergic and noradrenergic compounds, although no study has directly compared the two types of drugs. OBJECTIVE: The present study therefore directly compared the effects of a benzodiazepine with those of a beta-adrenergic blocker on the ability to recognise emotional expressions. METHODS:

Hemispheric differences in recognition of facial expressions: a VHF-study of negative, positive, and neutral emotions.

The present study was concerned with a tachistoscopic investigation of asymmetry of recognition of different facial emotional expressions. Twenty-eight subjects had nine different drawings of facial expressions (either positive, negative, or neutral in emotional content) presented either to the left or right visual half-field. Recognition of the correct face was made for each stimulus-presentation. The results showed overall better recognition for presentations in the left half-field (LVF) (i.e., right hemisphere) compared to right half-field (RVF) (i.e., left hemisphere) presentations. Furthe

Cross-Dataset Facial Micro-Expression Recognition with Regularization Learning and Action Unit-Guided Data Augmentation.

With the growing development of facial micro-expression recognition technology, its practical application value has attracted increasing attention. In real-world scenarios, facial micro-expression recognition typically involves cross-dataset evaluation, where training and testing samples come from different datasets. Specifically, cross-dataset micro-expression recognition employs multi-dataset composite training and unseen single-dataset testing. This setup introduces two major challenges: inconsistent feature distributions across training sets and data imbalance. To address the distribution
