Only Human: Mental-Health Difficulties Among Clinical, Counseling, and School Psychology Faculty and Trainees.

How common are mental-health difficulties among applied psychologists? This question is paradoxically neglected, perhaps because disclosure and discussion of these experiences remain taboo within the field. This study documented high rates of mental-health difficulties (both diagnosed and undiagnosed) among faculty, graduate students, and others affiliated with accredited doctoral and internship programs in clinical, counseling, and school psychology. More than 80% of respondents (n = 1,395 of 1,692) reported a lifetime history mental-health difficulties, and nearly half (48%) reported a diagn…

A questionnaire study on dental radiation knowledge and anxiety among patients applying to a faculty of dentistry.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to evaluate patients' knowledge-related responses, attitudes, anxiety levels, and radiation risk perceptions regarding dental radiographic imaging methods. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A structured 30-item questionnaire was administered face-to-face to 410 participants. Anxiety and radiation risk perception were assessed using a 5-point Likert scale, while knowledge-related responses were evaluated using categorical responses. Constructs were analyzed separately as anxiety (emotional response to radiographic procedures), risk perception (radiation-related conce

The impact of trauma faculty workforce expansion on advanced practice provider experience: Is there a ripple effect?

BACKGROUND: Appropriate trauma team staffing is essential for managing high patient volumes while supporting provider well-being. Although expanding attending surgeon coverage is a common strategy to address physician workload, the impact of additional faculty and team structure on advanced practice providers is not well defined. This study evaluates the effect of implementing a 2-surgeon trauma staffing model on patient outcomes and advanced practice provider-reported perceptions. METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of adult trauma patients before (January 2018-March 2020) and after…

A Consensus Based Research Agenda for Faculty and Learner Development in Competency Based Medical Education.

Competency based medical education (CBME) is an outcome-driven training model that assesses individual learners based on competencies and observable abilities. Although implementation of competencies and milestones by the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education has provided some ground work, full adoption of CBME is in its infancy in emergency medicine. Successful implementation of CBME will require dedicated attention to faculty and learner development; however, there is limited data or best practices available for guidance. To address this need, the Society of Academic Emergency …

The dual burden of visibility: A qualitative exploration of the experiences of male faculty in nursing education programs.

BACKGROUND: Men are persistently underrepresented in nursing academia, holding fewer than 8% of full-time faculty positions, yet their experiences remain under-studied and are often treated as uniform. Existing work relies largely on small single-institution samples and rarely examines how sexual orientation, race, gender modality, and age shape these experiences. OBJECTIVES: To explore the lived experiences of male faculty teaching in accredited nursing programs, and to examine how intersecting identities shape their sense of belonging, professional treatment, and intent to remain in academi…

Structural and Reliability Analysis of the Vietnamese Perceived Faculty Support Scale: Evidence for a Unidimensional Construct.

Background and Purpose: The Perceived Faculty Support Scale (PFSS) is one of the few instruments designed to assess faculty support. This study aimed to translate the scale into Vietnamese and evaluate its validity and reliability among nursing students. Methods: This cross-sectional study yielded a cross-cultural translation for the PFSS using convenience sampling. The validity of the Vietnamese version of the PFSS (PFSS-V) was assessed through face validity, content validity, construct validity using exploratory factor analysis (EFA), concurrent validity, and known-group validity. Coefficien…

Neuroenhancement and mental health in students from four faculties - a cross-sectional questionnaire study.

BACKGROUND: Students face great challenges at the beginning of and during their studies. Competitive experience, exam anxiety, and especially the new performance requirements often cause test anxiety and stressful experiences. The extent of substance use in terms of neuroenhancement (NE) is unclear. Evidence shows associations between NE, increased stress levels, and mental health. OBJECTIVES: We aim to determine the prevalence of NE and alcohol and tobacco use among college students. We also investigate the associations between NE and ADHD, anxiety, depression, and stress experience. METHOD

Inclusive pedagogy in Health Sciences Spanish faculties: Educational resources and methodologies for all students.

This article presents the educational practices carried out by Spanish faculty members of Health Sciences to attend to student diversity. A total of 19 faculty members of this area of knowledge suggested by their disabled students participated in the study. Following a qualitative methodology, individual semi-structured interviews were used for the gathering of data. The collected data were analysed through an inductive system of categories and codes. The results show the learning resources that the participants employed to allow all students to make use of them, as well as the teaching method…

Impact of X+Y Scheduling on Pediatric Resident and Faculty Perceptions of Education and Patient Care.

PURPOSE: Traditional half-day per week continuity clinic experiences can lead to fragmented education in both the inpatient and outpatient arenas. Five pediatric residency programs were granted the ability from the ACGME to create X+Y scheduling where residents have continuity clinic in "blocks" rather than half-day per week experiences. The aim of this study is to assess the impact X+Y scheduling has on pediatric resident and faculty perceptions of patient care and other educational experiences. METHODS: Electronic surveys were sent to residents and faculty of the participating programs both…

A hundred years of the constitution of Institute of Forensic Medicine of Faculty of Medicine of Comenius University in Bratislava.

The Institute of Forensic Medicine was established at the same time as the newly established Comenius University in 1919 and was one of the first five institutes of the Faculty of Medicine. The forensic medicine became not only a subject of medical education but also fulfilled a health care function, i. e. the performance of forensic and the then so-called medical-police autopsies, as well as forensic expertise for judicial authorities. Combining the teaching of the subject of forensic medicine with the practical performance of medical and expert activities formed the basis for beginning of th…

Reflective Practice in the Clinical Setting: A Multi-Institutional Qualitative Study of Pediatric Faculty and Residents.

PURPOSE: To explore when and in what form pediatric faculty and residents practice reflection. METHOD: From February to June 2015, the authors conducted focus groups of pediatric faculty and residents at the University of California, Davis; Stanford University; and the University of California, San Francisco, until thematic saturation occurred. Transcripts were analyzed based on Mezirow's and Schon's models of reflection, using the constant comparative method associated with grounded theory. Two investigators independently coded transcripts and reconciled codes to develop themes. All investig…

Management Practices of Cats Owned by Faculty, Staff, and Students at Two Midwest Veterinary Schools.

Understanding cat owners' housing, care, and management practices is important for promoting cat welfare. A survey study was conducted on the housing and management practices used for cats by students, faculty, and staff of The Ohio State University and Purdue University veterinary colleges. Subjects were 138 cat-owner dyads. Most cats (74%) were housed strictly indoors in keeping with common US veterinary recommendations. However, many did not implement best practices outlined for behavior and other welfare needs of indoor cats. The percentage of respondents placing resources where cats could…

Using postgraduate students' evaluations of research experience to benchmark departments and faculties: issues and challenges.

BACKGROUND: The introduction of the Australian Research Training Scheme has been a strong reason for assuring the quality of the research higher degree (RHD) experience; if students experience poor supervision, an unsupportive climate, and inadequate infrastructure, prior research suggests RHD students will be less likely to complete their degree, with negative consequences for the student, the university, and society at large. AIMS: The present study examines the psychometric properties of a survey instrument, the Student Research Experience Questionnaire (SREQ), for measuring the RHD experi
