Prospective associations between the family environment, family cohesion, and psychiatric symptoms among adolescent girls.

The present study used a longitudinal design to investigate whether parental values, interests, and the perceived level of expressiveness, cohesiveness and control in the family were associated with changes in psychiatric symptoms during early adolescence. We used data gathered at ages 12, 14 and 17 from 1,600 adolescent girls in the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute Growth and Health Study. Using a novel approach we found significant informant effects of family cohesion on psychiatric symptoms, with stronger associations for adolescent ratings than parental ratings. Multivariate modell…

Bipolar II disorder family history using the family history screen: findings and clinical implications.

Psychiatric family history of bipolar II disorder is understudied. The aims of the current study were to find the psychiatric family history of bipolar II patients using a new structured interview, the Family History Screen by Weissman et al (2000), and to find bipolar disorders family history predicting power for the diagnosis of bipolar II. One hundred sixty-four consecutive unipolar major depressive disorder (MDD) and 241 consecutive bipolar II major depressive episode (MDE) outpatients were interviewed with the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV (SCID). The Family History Screen was …

Marfan syndrome in a large family: response of family members to a screening programme.

Reaction to medical, social, and genetic implications of Marfan syndrome was evaluated by means of two questionnaires, the first after various tests before discussion of the diagnosis, the second after full discussion of the patient's diagnosis. Thirty-seven members of a family known to be at risk for Marfan syndrome attended for both questionnaires. All patients claimed to be satisfied with the way they were informed of the results of screening; 41% of patients were more worried about their health and 48% were more worried about the future after diagnosis. Apart from 50% of the smokers reduci…

Family Resilience Among Family Members of Intensive Care Unit Patients: A Qualitative Meta-Synthesis.

BACKGROUND: ICU critical illness places heavy psychological and financial burdens on families, weakening their coping capacity. Although family resilience helps mitigate these issues, systematic research on experiences and processes of family resilience operating in ICU family members is still lacking. AIMS: To systematically review and synthesize the existing qualitative evidence on the experiences and operational processes of family resilience among family members of ICU patients and provide suggestions for the development of interventions in future studies. STUDY DESIGN: The qualitative m…

Family first: integrating principles of family-centered care to improve the tuberculosis care cascade.

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, with persistent losses across the care cascade from screening and diagnosis to treatment completion and prevention. While TB programs have largely focused on disease control and individual patients, many barriers to care arise at the household level, including stigma, financial strain, caregiving demands, and limited access to information and support. Family-centered care (FCC), which engages families as active partners through shared decision-making, respect, and tailored support, has improved outcomes in other he…

Family physicians' preferences for education to support family caregivers: a sequential mixed methods study.

BACKGROUND: One in four Canadians is a family caregiver. Family caregivers (carers, care-partners) are relatives or chosen family, friends, or neighbors who provide 75 to 90% of the care for people with physical or mental illness, disabilities, or frailty living in community homes and assist with 15 to 30% of the care in congregate care. However, a recent (2022) Statistics Canada population health study reports 44% of family caregivers are distressed. Family physicians and primary care teams are well-positioned to support family caregivers; yet, family caregiver needs assessments tend to be ad…

Observed parent-adolescent coalitions and family hostilities during family discussions: Associations with marital aggression.

This study investigated bidirectional associations between observed parent-youth coalitions-wherein one parent and a child align themselves against the other parent-and family hostilities as they evolved in real-time during triadic family conflict discussions. Participants were 102 families with an adolescent child (50% girls, Mage  = 15.3 years, SD = 0.8). Using time-lagged, multilevel models, we tested immediate, temporal influences from hostility (within marital and mother-youth and father-youth relationships) to parent-youth coalitions and vice versa. Guided by sensitization theories, we a…

Family perception of the symptoms of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder patient and the family accommodation.

BACKGROUND: Family members tend to modify their routine by assisting or participating in the patient's rituals. These behaviors have been identified as family accommodation (FA). AIMS: The aim of this study was to describe the relationship between family accommodation of relatives of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) patients and their perceptions about the obsessions and compulsions of the patient. METHOD: This was a cross-sectional study with family members of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder in a Southern Brazilian city. The family perception of the OCD symptoms and their accommodation wer…

[Early prenatal diagnosis for a family affected with X-linked spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia tarda family].

OBJECTIVE: X-linked spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia tarda (SEDL) is a rare osteochondrodysplasia caused by mutations of SEDL gene, which usually onset in late childhood without systemic complications. In this study, we have provided prenatal diagnosis for an affected family with a combined strategy including direct sequencing, fetal-sex identification and microsatellite linkage analysis. METHODS: Two amniotic fluid samples from carrier gravida and 7 blood samples from individuals in this SEDL pedigree were obtained. Genomic DNA was extracted from the samples using standard phenol-chloroform meth…

The validity of the family history screen for assessing family history of mental disorders.

There is a need to collect psychiatric family history information quickly and economically (e.g., for genome-wide studies and primary care practice). We sought to evaluate the validity of family history reports using a brief screening instrument, the Family History Screen (FHS). We assessed the validity of parents' reports of seven psychiatric disorders in their adult children probands from the Dunedin Study (n = 959, 52% male), using the proband's diagnosis as the criterion outcome. We also investigated whether there were informant characteristics that enhanced accuracy of reporting or were a…

Chitinase family GH18: evolutionary insights from the genomic history of a diverse protein family.

BACKGROUND: Chitinases (EC.3.2.1.14) hydrolyze the beta-1,4-linkages in chitin, an abundant N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosamine polysaccharide that is a structural component of protective biological matrices such as insect exoskeletons and fungal cell walls. The glycoside hydrolase 18 (GH18) family of chitinases is an ancient gene family widely expressed in archea, prokaryotes and eukaryotes. Mammals are not known to synthesize chitin or metabolize it as a nutrient, yet the human genome encodes eight GH18 family members. Some GH18 proteins lack an essential catalytic glutamic acid and are likely to ac…

[Dysfunction in the family life cycle: alcohol abuse and its consequences on the family].

This paper studies how alcohol abuse interacts during the different stages of family-life cycle thus enhancing the possibilities of dysfunctions thereof. Formation of a family, its adapting to the first-born, the upbringing of preschool, school, and teenage children are the topics under review as well as the time when children leave home, and the later-life period when the elderly couple goes through the "empty nest" feeling. Alcohol abuse and its consequences upon the different family members are screened up. Finally, family therapy relevance when dealing with the treatment of alcoholism is p…

Families post-release: Barriers and pathways to family therapy.

Family therapy has helped repair relational ruptures and restore stability within families for decades. However, service can be inaccessible and underutilized among many minoritized and stigmatized groups, including families post-release. Harmful sociocultural and relational experiences pose considerable risks to families before, during, and after incarceration. While not exhaustive, this article highlights potential attitudinal, relational, and logistical obstacles to family therapy engendered by therapists, clients, or both. Feasible and accessible clinically oriented conceptual and practica…
