Parental separation/divorce in childhood and partnership outcomes at age 30.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has found that children exposed to separation/divorce may also experience relationship problems in adulthood. The aim of this investigation was to examine this issue in a birth cohort of over 900 New Zealand children studied to age 30. METHODS: Data were gathered over the course of the Christchurch Health and Development Study (CHDS). The CHDS is a 30 year longitudinal study of a birth cohort of 1265 children born in Christchurch (NZ) in 1977. The data collected included the following: (a) timing and number of parental separations and divorces from birth to 15 ye

Family Unification Program: Housing Services for Homeless Child Welfare-Involved Families.

The Family Unification Program-a U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development initiative to facilitate interagency collaboration between the child welfare and public housing service systems-aims to stabilize families at risk for parent-child separation by addressing housing needs. Findings from a randomized controlled trial suggest that families referred to the program experienced lower risk for homelessness and out-of-home placement compared with child welfare services as usual. The findings suggest that housing services offer an effective alternative to foster care.

[Parental support provided by the child protection educator].

Child protection provides for the removal of a child from his or her family when the child's basic needs are not being met. Out-of-home placement in a nursery is intended for children under the age of 3 who are exposed to situations of danger, neglect, or abuse. This separation can lead to psychological, relational, and physical repercussions requiring supportive and structured multidisciplinary care. However, the placement is not intended to exclude the parents but rather to maintain and support the family bond in accordance with the terms set by the judge. The caregiver plays a central role

Genetic basis of dominantly inherited transient bullous dermolysis of the newborn: a splice site mutation in the type VII collagen gene.

Transient bullous dermolysis of the newborn (TBDN) is a blistering disease evident at birth or shortly thereafter, but the blistering tendency decreases with advancing age. The tissue separation in TBDN is below the lamina densa, and electron microscopy has revealed abnormalities in anchoring fibrils. Immunofluorescence staining demonstrates intracellular accumulation of type VII collagen. In this study, we report a G-to-C transversion mutation in the last nucleotide of intron 35 of the type VII collagen gene (COL7A1) in a family with autosomal dominant TBDN in three generations. This nucleoti

Attachment relationships among children with aggressive behavior problems: the role of disorganized early attachment patterns.

This article reviews recent attachment-related studies of early aggression. That aggressive behavior toward peers is related to disorganized or controlling patterns of attachment behavior toward parents but not to avoidant or ambivalent patterns. Longitudinal attachment studies indicate that risk factors identified in cross-sectional studies of aggressive school-age children, such as family adversity, parental hostility, parental depression, and child cognitive deficits, are already evident in infancy and predictive of later aggression, before the onset of coercive child behavior. In infancy,

Familial vasovagal syncope and pseudosyncope: observations in a case with both natural and adopted siblings.

This report describes an 11-year-old girl with recurrent syncope beginning at the age of 2 1/2 years. Her paternal grandmother, father, and three of her five natural siblings had similar symptoms, often linked to emotional upsets. There were three adopted children from a single family, and none of these had syncope. Prior to referral there was an increase in attacks, some with convulsions, but with no other features of epilepsy. Vasovagal syncope was confirmed. However, continuous electroencephalogram, blood pressure, and heart rate recordings during attacks indicated that in some episodes the

Benefits of child-focused anxiety treatments for parents and family functioning.

BACKGROUND: To examine (1) changes in parent (global psychological distress, trait anxiety) and family (dysfunction, burden) functioning following 12 weeks of child-focused anxiety treatment, and (2) whether changes in these parent and family factors were associated with child's treatment condition and response. METHODS: Participants were 488 youth ages 7-17 years (50% female; mean age 10.7 years) who met DSM-IV-TR criteria for social phobia, separation anxiety, and/or generalized anxiety disorder, and their parents. Youth were randomly assigned to 12 weeks of "Coping Cat" individual cognitiv

[Family Psychiatry - The Attachment-Focused, Systemic-Oriented, Integrative Concept of the Family Therapy Centre (FaTC), an Acute Multi-Family Day Clinic].

Family Psychiatry - The Attachment-Focused, Systemic-Oriented, Integrative Concept of the Family Therapy Centre (FaTC), an Acute Multi-Family Day Clinic Up to three quarters of the children of mentally ill parents develop a mental disorder during their lifetime. The transmission occurs essentially through dysfunctional interaction and disturbed attachment. Parent-child interaction is characterized by a vicious circle of escalating symptoms in the child and increasing helplessness in the parents. For this family psychiatric approaches are helpful, which address the interaction in addition to th

Patterns and predictors of family environment among adolescents at high and low risk for familial bipolar disorder.

Children's perceptions are important to understanding family environment in the bipolar disorder (BD) high-risk context. Our objectives were to empirically derive patterns of offspring-perceived family environment, and to test the association of family environment with maternal or paternal BD accounting for offspring BD and demographic characteristics. Participants aged 12-21 years (266 offspring of a parent with BD, 175 offspring of a parent with no psychiatric history) were recruited in the US and Australia. We modeled family environment using latent profile analysis based on offspring repor

Transmission of hepatitis B virus infection in Gambian families revealed by phylogenetic analysis.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Transmission of hepatitis B virus (HBV) in Africa occurs horizontally, with most people becoming infected between the ages of 1 and 5 years. The index cases in such events have been assumed to come from within the family unit or from sources outside the immediate family, such as other families or inhabitants of the same compound or village. Here, we define these routes of transmission by phylogenetic tree analysis of sequences from the entire pre-core/core region of the virus, in Gambian chronic carriers. METHODS: Amplification by polymerase chain reaction of serum extracted

Labor migration is prevalent in Nepal, however, the psychosocial impacts on left-behind families remain underexplored. This study aims to ad … with many participants demonstrating remarkable adaptability despite the challenges that arose from family separation. Our study suggests that left-behind family members experienced important changes in their roles as well as in emotional and social relationships. Future studies could extend this work to identify factors leading to changes that promote resilience.

The Use of Information Communication Technologies in a South African Deaf Older Adult Population Living in a Residential Care Home to Communicate with Emigrant Family Members.

South Africa has experienced considerable international outward migration in the last half century, which has had a severe psychological impact on members of families affected by this phenomenon. Older parents who remain behind may experience feelings of loss and isolation. Information Communication Technologies (ICTs) are useful in maintaining relationships between family members separated by migration and increasingly allow migrant families to experience a virtual co-presence despite geographical separation. However, the process may be challenging, especially for older people with hearing di

The psychological impact of conflict in the Middle East from 2023 to 2025 on Australian communities: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: There is a lack of empirical research on the mental health risks faced by populations living in high-income multicultural countries during a war in their country of origin. We examined mental health and psychosocial outcomes associated with a period during the 2023-2025 Middle East conflict (primarily involving Israel, Palestine and Lebanon) on Australian resident women including those who arrived from Lebanon, Gaza and other Palestinian Territories. METHODS: The mental health study assessed 410 Australian resident women at two points: one 12-18 months prior, and one period during

Adverse childhood experiences and risk of suicide and substance-related mortality through middle adulthood.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have prospectively examined whether adverse childhood experiences contribute to suicide or substance-related mortality. Moreover, children are often exposed to multiple adversities making it critical to identify which clusters of adversities are most harmful for these outcomes. Accordingly, we investigated risk for suicide and substance-related mortality based on the number and clusters of adversities children were exposed to. METHODS: Identifying information from 49,853 offspring born between 1959 and 1966 to participants in the Collaborative Perinatal Project was lin

The Clustering of Adverse Childhood Experiences in the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children: Are Gender and Poverty Important?

Previous research has demonstrated a graded relationship between the number of Adverse Childhood Experiences reported (an ACE score) and child outcomes. However, ACE scores lack specificity and ignore the patterning of adversities, which are informative for interventions. The aim of the present study was to explore the clustering of ACEs and whether this clustering differs by gender or is predicted by poverty. Data on 8,572 participants of the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC) were used. ALSPAC is a regionally representative prenatal cohort of children born between 1991

Effects of early life trauma are dependent on genetic predisposition: a rat study.

BACKGROUND: Trauma experienced early in life increases the risk of developing a number of psychological and/or behavioural disorders. It is unclear, however, how genetic predisposition to a behavioural disorder, such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), modifies the long-term effects of early life trauma. There is substantial evidence from family and twin studies for susceptibility to ADHD being inherited, implying a strong genetic component to the disorder. In the present study we used an inbred animal model of ADHD, the spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR), to investigate the

[Do Siblings have a Different Influence on Self-Assessed Family Functioning in Patients with Anorexia and Bulimia Nervosa?].

The impact of family factors, particularly the sibling status, on the development and course of eating disorders has been rarely investigated. Therefore, the aimof the present study was to assess a putative association between sibling status and self-rated family dysfunctionality in a large sample of study participants with bulimia nervosa and anorexia nervosa. A total cohort of n = 568 outpatients aged twelve years and older, of whomhalf had the diagnosis of anorexia (n = 288, 50.7 %), was assessed for self-rated family dysfunctionality using the well-validated German General Family Questionna

Family poly-victimization and cyberbullying among adolescents in a Chinese school sample.

The sustained increase in their use of social networking facilitates the development of adolescents but comes with the risk of cyberbullying, which creates new challenges in regard to adolescent protection. Past evidence shows that family victimization may play an essential role in the way adolescents learn cyberbullying behaviors. Yet, research on the co-occurrence of family victimization and cyberbullying is limited. This study aims to investigate the associations between cyberbullying and family victimization among adolescents, and to examine the health correlates of cyberbullying and famil
